Abstract

This study aims to analyze and identify the fulfillment of basic psychological needs how this fulfillment shapes the types of motivation. The data were taken from the movie Good Will Hunting through the documentation method and note-taking technique. The data analyzed descriptively using qualitative research methods by applying Self-Determination Theory by Ryan and Deci (2017). Informal methods supported by narrative technique were used in presenting the data analyzed. The findings reveal that the fulfillment of the main character basic psychological needs autonomy (asserted through confronting fears and making authentic decisions), competence (realized by reframing challenges as growth opportunities), and relatedness (achieved through bonds of trust and vulnerability with Sean and Skylar) directly shapes his motivational landscape. His motivations transition dynamically from amotivation, characterized by disengagement and self-sabotage when needs are thwarted, through various forms of extrinsic motivation, culminating in intrinsic motivation driven by emotional liberation and self-determination as needs are met. The analysis underscores that psychological need fulfillment is foundational to motivational quality, facilitated by supportive relationships and self-reflection. Keywords: movie, motivation, basic psychological needs, types of motivation

Abstract

This research paper aims to explore the types of figurative language employed in the song lyrics of Rex Orange County, examine the messages conveyed through these figurative languages, and analyze their functions. The study adopts a content analysis methodology and draws on the theories of Keraf (2009), Leech (2009), and Perrine (1969) for the analysis. The analysis reveals a total of 67 instances of figurative language in the selected songs of Rex Orange County. Emotional intensity emerges as the most prevalent type, accounting for 36% of the identified instances. Additionally, imaginative pleasure and means of concentration are found to be prevalent functions at 31% and 21% respectively. These findings emphasize the artist's adeptness in using figurative language to evoke strong emotions and convey profound meanings within their music. The study offers insights into the utilization of figurative language to enhance the poetic experience and effectively communicate sensitive topics.

Abstract

Instagram has emerged as a powerful tool in English Language Teaching (ELT), offering multimedia-based interactive learning experiences that enhance student engagement and instructional delivery. This systematic review examines the role of Instagram in ELT, highlighting its advantages, challenges and implications for language learning. Using the PRISMA method, 15 studies from various academic sources, including Google Scholar, and Mendeley, were analyzed. Findings show that Instagram encourages student participation through features such as Stories, Reels, and IGTV, supports peer collaboration, and facilitates formative assessment. However, challenges such as digital distractions, ethical concerns, and accessibility issues remain significant. This study concludes that while Instagram has the potential to revolutionize ELT, a structured implementation strategy is needed to maximize its benefits while overcoming its limitations. Future research should focus on developing best practices for integrating Instagram into the formal ELT curriculum to ensure its effectiveness as an educational tool.

Abstract

This qualitative case study focuses into the use of Quizizz, a digital quiz platform, for integrated language skill assessment in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. The study, which was conducted with secondary school instructors and students in Indonesia, looked at how educators use Quizizz to develop exams that include listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills, as well as teacher and student evaluations of its usefulness. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, focus groups, and assessment material analysis. Thematic analysis found that Quizizz effectively supports the integration of receptive and productive abilities and increases student engagement through gamification, but it presents issues in assessing speaking skills and requires significant instructor work for task design. The findings show the platform's potential for dynamic, motivating language evaluations, while also emphasizing the importance of complementing tools and professional development to address its shortcomings. This study informs the use of digital technologies in comprehensive language skill assessment within EFL situations.

Abstract

This research investigates the system of visual imagery in Taylor Swift's 31-track album, “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.” It aims to analyze how Swift utilizes visual imagery and allusions not as mere decoration but as a functional system to elevate personal narratives of heartbreak and fame into archetypal explorations of suffering and survival. Employing a qualitative method with a semiotic approach, the study conducts a close reading of the album’s lyrical content. It also examines the motifs of performance and spectacle, which expose the painful dissonance between a public persona and a private self; the theme of subverted domesticity, where traditional images of home and love are corrupted; the feeling of cosmic alienation; and finally, the self-referential meta-narrative of creation, which tracks the process of transforming pain into art. The findings reveal that the visual imagery creates a claustrophobic emotional world, framing personal pain within universal mythological and literary contexts to legitimize it. This research concludes that Swift uses this visual lexicon to transform personal agony into a shared, survivable artifact, thereby positioning the artist as a healer and affirming the significance of popular song lyrics as a rich text for academic inquiry.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesian junior high schools through a narrative inquiry into the lived experiences of an English teacher. Using qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, and classroom observations, the research investigates how the teacher navigates pedagogical shifts demanded by the new curriculum, including project-based learning, differentiated instruction, and digital literacy integration. The findings highlight four interconnected themes: teacher readiness, innovative instructional strategies, systemic and contextual challenges, and the transformation of professional identity. The teacher's story reveals a complex negotiation between curriculum ideals and classroom realities, underscoring the emotional, intellectual, and institutional labor involved in educational reform. Despite facing limited resources, time constraints, and peer resistance, the teacher demonstrates professional agency, reflective practice, and commitment to student-centered learning. The study concludes that successful curriculum reform hinges on empowering teacher voices, providing contextual support, and fostering reflective communities of practice. It advocates for policy design that is informed by practitioners' narratives and grounded in the realities of diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study explores the English vocabulary learning experiences of 11th-grade students in a Vocational High School in East Java, Indonesia, within the framework of the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum. While previous research has focused on teaching strategies and curriculum implementation from the teacher's perspective, this study emphasizes students' voices, particularly how they engage with vocabulary learning in a hospitality context. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis framework.Findings reveal three major themes: (1) Learner Agency and Personalization, where students exhibit autonomy in selecting vocabulary relevant to their interests and future careers; (2) Digital Literacy Through Vocabulary Acquisition, as students increasingly use digital platforms such as YouTube, games, and social media to enhance vocabulary learning; and (3) Navigation Challenges in Autonomous Learning, including difficulties in evaluating word relevance, managing abundant resources, and lacking standardized vocabulary lists. Quantitative data from the Likert-scale questionnaire support the qualitative findings, indicating high motivation and positive perceptions toward the curriculum, yet also highlighting issues such as limited guidance and time constraints. The study concludes that while the Merdeka Curriculum fosters independent and contextual vocabulary learning, ongoing support in terms of teacher facilitation, curriculum alignment, and access to appropriate learning resources is essential for maximizing student outcomes in vocational education.
