Abstract

"What is love?" is the second studio album by British electronic band Clean Bandit to talk about what love is. This album consists of 16 songs, and we have chosen 8 songs to be analyzed. The reason why we chose these eight songs is because they are popular and contain figurative language in them. This study aims to analyze the figurative language of the selected song lyrics. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative method. We analyzed the types of figurative language and the meaning of the song lyrics. This study found several findings. There are 28 figurative languages contained in the 8 selected songs which are divided into seven metaphors, six similes, one personification, two metonymy, two allegories, one paradox, eight hyperboles, one litotes. We found that the most common figurative language found in songs entitled "Out of Night" has four, "Solo" has six, "Tears" has five, "Symphony", "mama" has two each, “Nowhere” and “Should've Known Better” have three each, and “Beautiful” has one. In conclusion, this album has a lot of figurative language and uses 12 types of figurative language. There are many figurative meanings in the album.

Abstract

Pride and Prejudice is a movie adaptation of the novel of the same name, Pride and Prejudice. Pride and Prejudice is a film that tells about Elizabeth's family and Elizabeth's love story with Tuan Darcy. Elizabeth was born into a fairly simple family, she has sisters named Jane, Lydia and Marry. Elizabeth's mother, Mrs. Bennet, wanted her daughter to marry a man from a wealthy family. Until one day Elizabeth met Mr. Darcy who came from a wealthy and respected family, fell in love with each other, but at the beginning of their love story they experienced many obstacles, but strong proof of their love brought them back together. This study aims to describe how Politeness can be used in everyday life and explore the types of politeness used by each character in the film Pride and Prejudice. The researcher uses a type of qualitative research method, namely by watching Pride and Prejudice films through the website. The results of this study are, there are four types of politeness request strategies used by Pride and Prejudice film characters, the four strategies are Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness and Off Record. As well as what types of Politeness are often used in everyday life, namely there are two Positive Politeness and Bald on Record. One must know how to make polite requests in English, because requests can threaten both the speaker's and listener's faces. Speakers should minimize coercion in their requests. Therefore, language users must pay attention to the use of politeness strategies, especially in conveying requests so as to minimize the potential for losing face.

Abstract

The perception of minor characters needed to be understood through their voices specifically in Animal Farm by George Orwell. Animal Farm contains the power gap that causes injustice to the minor characters. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristic elements of dialogue among the minor characters and the characteristics of the government system that are reflected in Animal Farm by George Orwell. In analyzing the voices of the minor characters, the theory is used by the Bakhtin theory of dialogism. Meanwhile, in analyzing the government system that reflected in Animal Farm used the theory of totalitarianism by Friedrich and Brzezinski. This study also used a qualitative method. In this study, the characteristic elements of dialogue are divided into two; discourse of authority and internally persuasive discourse. Discourse of authority consists of monological communication and hallmark. Internally persuasive discourse consists of dialogical communication which has empathy, beliefs, ideas, awareness, and confusion characteristics. Meanwhile the government system that is reflected in Animal Farm is similar to totalitarianism which fits into its six characteristics; official ideology, single party, terroristic police control, monopoly system related to communication, party’s monopoly related to opposition, and economic central control. This study definitively answers the questions regarding the characteristic elements of dialogue among the minor characters and the characteristics of totalitarianism as the government system that is reflected in Animal Farm.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to analyze the messages in the song "Lonely" and the factors that make Justin Bieber depressed portrayed in "Lonely" by Justin Bieber using psychological approach with the theoryof Edward Bibring;The Mechanism of Depression(2018) and of Aaron Beck;Cognitive Theory of Depression(2009). The historical background of Bieber’s mental health has been examined based onarticles from newspapers or magazines, Bieber’s official Instagram, and Justin Bieber’s Youtubedocumentary. The researchers used the qualitative descriptive method in conducting this research.Researchers found three messages in "Lonely" by Bieber based on data provided by Bieber. There areexpressions of despair and helplessness and struggles of life with fame. Based on the data above,researchers found four factors that made Bieber depressed. Those are substance abuse (drugs), abusiverelationships (emotionally and physically), Lyme disease, and irresponsible behavior.

Abstract

This study is entitled Positive Values Reflected in the Film Played by Fin Argus Entitled “Clouds”. Film is a medium that has a significant impact on presenting information and as a tool for communicating dispatches to cult or the general public. The purpose of this disquisition is to examine the positive values in the film "Clouds" using Gordon Allport's (1961) theory. This study is concentrated on two exploration problem, the first is what are the types of positive values reflected in the film played by Fin Argus entitled “Clouds” and the second is how the main character demonstrates positive values in the film. The disquisition system used in this study is descriptive qualitative system. The results of this study, the film "Clouds" contains a variety type of positive values, including theoretical values (2 extracts), social values (9 extracts), economics values (3 extracts), aesthetic values (3 extracts), personal values (6 extracts), and religious values (1 extract). The researcher also discovered several necessary values that may be used to gain the terminal values. For case, determination, perseverance, empathy, tone- confidence, open- mindedness, affection, rigidity, dedication, curiosity, honesty, cooperation, tone- care, hard work, humanity, and tone- acceptance. The main character also demonstrates positive values in general throughout the film, for case, in the data there are perseverance (2 extracts), Love and friendship (1 extract), courage (1 extract), authenticity (1 extract), kindness & empathy and positivity & optimism (1 extract).

Abstract

This research is entitled "Figurative Languages Used in Paulo Coelho's Novel 'The Alchemist'." This study aims to analyze the types of figurative language in the novel "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho using Perrine's theory (1977). The analysis method used refers to the semantic approach by considering Leech's (1969) theory to explore the meaning in various types of figurative language. The research data were obtained from the extraction of 92 figurative language sentences consisting of simile (24), metaphor (36), personification (27), hyperbole (1), antithesis (2), parallelism (1), idiom (1), metonymy (2), and paradox (1). The analysis also identified two main categories of meaning that are frequently used, namely associative meaning and connotative meaning. The findings provide deep insight into how Coelho utilizes different types of figurative language to enrich the reader's experience and convey profound messages in "The Alchemist". This research is expected to contribute to the understanding of literature and the use of figurative language in modern literary works.

Abstract

Gender stereotypes are views or beliefs that are generally applied to men and women within a culture or society. This research aims to analyze the aspects and meanings of gender stereotypes in Legally Blonde movie. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method and is analyzed using a feminist approach. The research findings indicate that the movie Legally Blonde presents various stereotypes about women. However, the main character in the movie, Elle Woods, successfully challenges and proves herself to be a woman who is not only glamorous and feminine, but also intelligent and capable of studying law at Harvard and becoming a lawyer. The research concludes that stereotypes in the film can be harmful and limit opportunities available to women in real life. By challenging these stereotypes, Legally Blonde encourages audiences to see women beyond their physical appearance or social roles. Appearance cannot be an indicator of one's intelligence and abilities.

Abstract

This research discussed how dominant habitus is represented in Haruki Murakami’s Novel “Hear the Wind Sing”. This research aims to discover dominant habitus represented in Haruki Murakami’s Novel “Hear the Wind Sing”. To analyze dominant habitus, this research used concept habitus, field, and capital through strategy of domination theory by Pierre Bourdieu. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method to describe the data that there is a dominant habitus in Haruki Murakami’s novel “Hear the Wind Sing”. This is represented through the lifestyle of the characters in Haruki Murakami’s novel “Hear the Wind Sing”, the dominant habitus in this research are, drinking beer, going to the bar, reading books, listening to western music and vacationing in luxury places.

Abstract

This research is entitled " Symbolic Interactionism of the Main Character “Noah” in the Noah Movie: A Sociolinguistic Analysis." This study aims to analyze how the symbolic interactionism reflected of the main character “Noah” in the “Noah Movie by Darren Aronofsky (2014) by using George Harbert Mead’s theory (1937) the types of Symbolic Interactionism attaching symbols to object, actions, and interactions. The analysis method used refers to the sociolinguistic analysis by considering Blumer (1986) theory to explore the interpret meaning from their social interactions especially ‘Noah’ as the main character in the movie. Descriptive qualitative research is used in this study. Data obtained from the text of conversations between the main character and other characters that contain elements of symbolic interactionism. The results of this research show that there are 25 screenshots of the main character scenes in total as the data that has been collected from “Noah” movie. The findings provide deep insight into how the main character “Noah” reflects Symbolic Interactionism in various way such us personal appearance, verbal and nonverbal communication, self-concept, perceptions of others and role-taking. And from the 25 extracts obtained, the researcher also concludes that the use of symbolic interactionism on the main character focuses on object, person, and action, and especially how the final result is obtained and consists of presented meaning, language and thoughts from the symbolic interactionism of the main character. This research is expected to contribute to the understanding of literature and how the reflected of Symbolic Interactionism of the main character in the movie literary works.Keywords: Symbolic Interactionism, Noah, Movie, Sociolinguistic

Abstract

Sosialisasi ini berfokus pada optimalisasi teknologi digital dalam penguatan moderasi beragama di kalangan masyarakat, khususnya mahasiswa, dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Moderasi beragama merupakan konsep penting yang menekankan sikap toleransi, keseimbangan, dan penghargaan terhadap keragaman dalam kehidupan beragama. Di era digital yang semakin berkembang, teknologi memiliki potensi besar untuk menjadi alat yang efektif dalam menyebarkan nilai-nilai moderasi ini. Sosialisasi ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi bagaimana teknologi digital, seperti media sosial, platform pendidikan daring, dan aplikasi digital, dapat digunakan secara optimal untuk memperkuat pemahaman dan penerapan moderasi beragama. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi, serta kajian literatur terkait penggunaan teknologi dalam konteks keagamaan. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari mahasiswa yang aktif menggunakan teknologi digital dalam kegiatan keagamaan dan penyebaran nilai-nilai moderasi. Hasil sosialisasi menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan teknologi digital dapat secara efektif meningkatkan kesadaran dan pemahaman tentang moderasi beragama. Media sosial dan platform digital memungkinkan penyebaran pesan moderasi secara lebih luas dan cepat, menjangkau berbagai lapisan masyarakat, termasuk generasi muda. Namun, tantangan yang muncul meliputi adanya konten-konten yang bersifat ekstremisme yang juga tersebar luas di media digital. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan pendekatan strategis dalam menggunakan teknologi ini untuk memastikan pesan moderasi beragama dapat tersampaikan dengan baik. Sosialisasi ini merekomendasikan pengembangan lebih lanjut program-program edukasi digital yang berfokus pada moderasi beragama, serta peningkatan literasi digital di kalangan pengguna, untuk mendukung upaya penguatan moderasi beragama di tengah kemajuan teknologi.
