Abstract

This study investigated the role of kinesthetic movements in supporting letter-sound awareness among toddlers aged 2 years at a child care center in Canggu, Bali. A qualitative descriptive design was employed to examine how movement-based phonics instruction facilitated early literacy development. Data were collected through classroom observations, field notes, and a Likert-scale observation checklist during eight instructional sessions involving 15 children. The analysis focused on four indicators: imitating the kinesthetic gesture, producing the letter sound, responding to a heard letter sound, and identifying the corresponding letter. The study was guided by the principles of structured teacher support and multimodal learning, which emphasize integrating verbal and physical experiences in early learning. Data were analyzed using an interactive qualitative approach involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed a gradual improvement in children’s recognition of the five-target letter sounds across the instructional sessions. Letter sounds accompanied by more distinctive movements were acquired more quickly than those accompanied by less noticeable movements. The results suggested that kinesthetic movements effectively supported letter-sound awareness and contributed to early literacy development among toddlers.

Abstract

The low level of comprehensive reading skills among college students requires a transformation toward student-centered learning. This study aims to determine and describe the improvement of students' comprehensive reading skills in the Comprehensive Reading course at Universitas Merangin through the application of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the Kemmis & McTaggart model, consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research subjects were one class of students enrolling in the Comprehensive Reading course. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests, observation sheets of lecturer and student activities, and project product assessment rubrics. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively with a success indicator of 80% of students achieving the minimum criteria. The findings indicate that the implementation of PjBL significantly improves comprehensive reading skills across literal, inferential, critical, and creative levels. The requirement to create research-based products forces students to actively analyze and synthesize information. This study implies that PjBL can be utilized as an innovative and effective learning model for reading courses in higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to describe spelling errors found in undergraduate thesis abstracts written by students of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Madura, based on the provisions of the Fifth Edition of Indonesian Spelling Guidelines (Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia/EBI). The study employed a qualitative descriptive design. The data consisted of thesis abstracts collected from the Universitas Madura Library. Data were gathered through documentation and text observation and analyzed through identification, classification, tabulation, and interpretation stages. The findings revealed 118 spelling errors, consisting of 47 letter usage errors (39.8%), 41 word-writing errors (34.7%), and 30 punctuation errors (25.5%). Letter-related errors were predominantly associated with inappropriate capitalization, while word-writing errors were dominated by non-standard word forms and incorrect affixation. Punctuation errors mainly involved the misuse of commas. These findings indicate that the implementation of Indonesian spelling conventions in thesis abstracts remains suboptimal. The errors reflect not only insufficient mastery of spelling rules but also limited academic editing practices among students. This study provides empirical evidence regarding the quality of spelling usage in academic writing among engineering students and offers a basis for strengthening academic literacy and scientific writing instruction in higher education.

Abstract

Public figure clarifications on social media have become a complex space for truth contestation in digital society. This research is motivated by the strategic use of linguistic devices by public figures to restore their image and construct a narrative of truth following digital conflicts. The purpose of this study is to identify and describe the various functions of assertive illocutionary speech acts used by Mohan Hazian, Panji Sukma, and Roby Tremonti in their clarification videos. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a pragmatic approach. Data were collected using listening and note-taking techniques, then analyzed based on Searle's speech act taxonomy. The results of the study revealed 45 data points of assertive speech acts divided into eight functions, namely stating, denying, reporting, assessing, emphasizing, admitting, claiming, and complaining. The functions of stating and denying are the most dominant as instruments of self-defense. These findings prove that speakers combine logical facts with emotional aspects to regain public trust. The benefit of this research is to provide a theoretical contribution to the development of pragmatic studies regarding crisis communication strategies in digital media and to serve as a guide for the public to be more critical in dissecting the intent behind public figure clarifications.

Abstract

This study examines the use of deixis in the short story "Baluembidi" by Putra Hidayatullah using a pragmatic approach and descriptive qualitative method. Deixis refers to linguistic expressions whose interpretation depends on the context of utterance, including references to persons, places, and time. This study aims to identify the types of deixis found in the short story "Baluembidi", and analyze the functions of deixis in constructing meaning and narrative context. Data were collected through observation, note-taking, and free participatory techniques, then analyzed using pragmatic identity analysis. The results reveal that the short story contains five types of deixis: person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. Person deixis is most dominant, appearing in the form of first, second, and third person pronouns in both singular and plural forms. Place deixis is realized through expressions such as "di sana" (over there), "ke sana" (toward there), and "di gunung itu" (in that mount), which not only indicate physical location but also reflect the social and psychological conditions of the characters. Overall, the use of deixis in this short story contributes significantly to the narrative structure, story setting, and the emotional bond between readers and the characters or events portrayed.

Abstract

The rapid development of social media has expanded public interaction while increasing the occurrence of hate speech in digital communication. This study examines hate speech directed at Inara Rusli in the comment section of Denny Sumargo’s podcast account (@CURHAT Bang Denny Sumargo). It aims to identify the forms of speech acts used in hate speech and analyze the types of hate speech along with their linguistic indicators from a forensic linguistics perspective. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data consisted of netizens’ comments containing hate speech, collected through observation, reading, and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using the interactive analysis model involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Speech act analysis was based on John Searle’s (1979) Speech Act Theory, while hate speech was examined using forensic linguistics. The findings reveal three forms of speech acts, namely expressive, directive, and assertive, with expressive speech acts dominating in the form of criticism, blame, and condemnation. Four types of hate speech were identified: insult, defamation, provocation, and stigmatization. These were realized through words, phrases, and sentences containing pejorative lexical items, negative labeling, accusations, and imperative constructions. The study concludes that these linguistic features function as linguistic evidence representing speakers’ attitudes while constructing negative public images of the target, contributing to the development of forensic linguistics research on hate speech in social media.
