Abstract

This study aims to describe the presentation form and analyze the functional transformation of the Caping Gangsing Dance as a cultural identity of Lerep Tourism Village, Semarang Regency. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The informants included choreographers, dancers, tourism village managers, and community members involved in the development of the dance. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the presentation form of the Caping Gangsing Dance consists of movement, musical accompaniment, makeup and costumes, properties, and performance structure that represent the agrarian life of the Lerep community. The caping property becomes a distinctive element that strengthens the dance identity, while the movements illustrate activities such as farming and mutual cooperation. The dance has also experienced functional transformation, from an educational medium introducing traditional games and local values to a cultural preservation medium, tourism attraction, village promotion media, and representation of community identity. This transformation indicates that Caping Gangsing Dance functions not only as a performing art but also as a cultural symbol that strengthens the image and identity of Lerep Tourism Village.

Abstract

This study aims to design a logo for the Dugderan Festival using the Warak Ngendog icon through a visual semiotic approach to strengthen the cultural image of Semarang City. The research employs a qualitative method with a design communication visual approach. Data were collected through observation, literature study, documentation, and questionnaire. The design process includes problem identification, data collection, brainstorming, moodboard compilation, visual exploration, sketch development, digitalization, and logo selection through a questionnaire. The results indicate that the Dugderan Festival has not yet utilized a consistent visual identity system, despite having strong cultural values represented by Warak Ngendog. The designed logo applies stylization principles to the Warak Ngendog icon combined with bedug and crescent moon elements, producing a simple, recognizable, memorable, and flexible identity. The logo was selected by 60% of respondents as the best alternative. This study contributes to the theoretical development of cultural-based logo design through semiotic visualization of local icons and provides practical recommendations for the Semarang City Government in building a sustainable festival cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the mechanisms of visual communication in non-verbal animated film posters through semiotic and aesthetic analysis. The research object selected is the poster for the film Flow (2024), a unique work characterized by the absence of verbal communication in its narrative, thereby placing the entire burden of message delivery on visual elements. The method employed is descriptive qualitative with a two-stage semiotic significance approach by Roland Barthes, reinforced by theories of color psychology and visual composition. The results indicate that the Flow (2024) poster constructs meanings of resilience and non-human agency through the use of a "demand gaze" on the main character, which necessitates the audience's emotional engagement. Aesthetically, the study finds an affective dialectic between the use of cool tones (Midnight Blue), symbolizing ecological isolation, and golden rim lighting accents as a signifier of hope. The massive use of negative space in the poster successfully creates a "sublime" effect, mythologizing the collapse of the Anthropocene era while glorifying the spirit of interspecies survival. This research concludes that the strength of non-verbal film posters lies in the sharpness of visual sign systems that transcend linguistic boundaries to convey complex symbolic narratives. The practical implications of this study provide guidance for visual communication designers regarding the effectiveness of color contrast and spatial dynamics in building a powerful narrative atmosphere.

Abstract

The increasing competitiveness of the culinary industry requires businesses to adopt effective visual communication strategies capable of establishing a strong and memorable brand identity. However, Mamaju Semarang continues to face challenges due to the limited effectiveness of its existing promotional media in enhancing brand awareness. This study aims to address these challenges through the development of more strategic and communicative promotional media. The research employs the Design Thinking method, consisting of the empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test stages, while adopting a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach to guide the problem analysis and design process. The resulting promotional media emphasize the visual appeal of the menu as the primary design element and include conventional leaflets, interactive leaflets, and supporting media such as tote bags. The design focuses on creating strong visual communication, maintaining a consistent brand identity, and incorporating interactive media to deliver a more engaging, memorable, and user-centered experience. Beyond serving as informational materials, these promotional media also function as visual communication tools capable of extending promotional reach through indirect engagement. Overall, the proposed design demonstrates significant potential to support promotional activities and strengthen brand awareness through sustained implementation.

Abstract

Music functions not only as an auditory medium but also as a source of visual interpretation through the process of intersemiotic translation, which enables meanings expressed through lyrics and musical atmosphere to be translated into visual forms. This creative research aimed to produce semi-realistic digital illustrations as symbolic interpretations of three Blink-182 songs, namely "What's My Age Again?", "She's Out of Her Mind", and "One More Time", selected to represent different themes and phases in the band's musical career. The study employed a qualitative creation-based approach using thematic analysis to identify dominant themes, emotional atmospheres, and symbolic elements embedded in the song lyrics. The analytical findings were then transformed into visual metaphors through a creative process consisting of pre-production, production, and post-production stages using Adobe Illustrator with the gradient mesh technique to achieve a semi-realistic visual style. The creative outcomes comprise three digital illustrations entitled "Merry-Go-Nowhere", "B-Side Brain", and "Ghosted (By The Couch)", representing themes of adulthood crisis, irrational obsession in personal relationships, and regret over loss and the fleetingness of time without depicting the physical appearance or iconic attributes of the band members. The creation demonstrates that semi-realistic digital illustration effectively communicates the emotional meanings of song lyrics through symbolic visual representation while offering an alternative approach to music visualization that emphasizes personal interpretation, metaphorical expression, and visual storytelling. Furthermore, this study provides a practical reference for illustrators and visual communication designers in developing music-inspired visual works through symbolic interpretation.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the megabiodiverse countries with a very high wealth of bird species, including various birds endemic to Java Island that play an important role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. However, the younger generation's limited knowledge of local bird species and the limited use of engaging learning media have hindered efforts to introduce and preserve Javanese birds from running optimally. As a solution to this problem, this study designed an illustrated book of Javanese birds in the form of an e-book entitled “KENALI SI KICAU DARI JAWA” as a visual educational medium that aims to introduce various species of Javanese birds to the public, especially teenagers. Illustration books are chosen as an educational medium because they present information through a combination of illustrations and text, making the characteristics of birds, habitats, behaviors, and conservation status easier to understand and increasing readers' interest in learning. It is hoped that through this medium, public knowledge, concern, and appreciation for the diversity of Javanese birds can increase so as to support efforts to preserve local fauna in the digital era. The technique used in the design process is digital illustration. The result of the design is in the form of a digital illustration book in the form of an e-book consisting of 15 pages and containing information about the morphology, habitat, behavior, and conservation status of several species of Javanese birds with a visual presentation that is tailored to the characteristics of the target reader.

Abstract

The Resam Munoling tradition is a cultural heritage of the Gayo community in Kebayakan, Central Aceh, reflecting mutual cooperation (gotong royong) and artistic values in rice harvesting. However, modernization has caused this tradition to fade, particularly the traditional singing elements and the accompaniment of canang music. This descriptive qualitative study aims to analyze the strategy of reconstructing the arts within Resam Munoling to ensure they remain preserved and relevant. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation with artists, farmers, and community leaders in Kebayakan Subdistrict. The study identified five key reconstruction strategies: mapping and documentation, training, artist collaboration, technology utilization, and government support. The results indicate that reconstruction can be achieved by documenting artistic elements (music, songs, costumes), involving local artists for regeneration, and utilizing digital technology for promotion. Government support through policies, funding, and cultural festivals is also highly significant. This reconstruction not only revives traditional art but also strengthens the cultural identity and social solidarity of the Kebayakan community
