Abstract

Social media has become a key channel for businesses to convey information about products and services to consumers. In this context, visual communication design plays a crucial role in message delivery through the various visual elements found in promotional content. This study aims to analyze the application of visual communication design in Alfa Print’s promotional content published on Instagram. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was employed. Data were gathered through observation and documentation of the promotional content serving as the study's subject. The analysis examined visual communication design elements, including color, typography, layout, illustration, and visual messaging. The results indicate that Alfa Print’s promotional content effectively incorporates visual communication design elements when presenting information to the audience. Regarding color, the designs are dominated by blue—serving as the primary visual identity—complemented by yellow, red, and white to highlight key information. In terms of typography, the use of sans-serif typefaces and varying font sizes establishes a visual hierarchy that enhances readability. Regarding layout, the arrangement of visual elements creates a structured reading flow, although some content suffers from information overcrowding and suboptimal use of white space. As for illustrations, the use of visuals depicting products and printing services clarifies the information conveyed, though visual quality consistency requires improvement. Finally, the visual messaging successfully supports the communication of product and service information, although the strengthening of brand identity warrants further attention.

Abstract

This research analyses five film posters by Tim Burton, including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Frankenweenie, to explore how recurring visual symbols contribute to the formation of the director’s distinctive artistic identity. Employing a qualitative methodology alongside Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory, the posters were examined through the levels of denotation and connotation, with particular attention to visual elements such as colour, composition, typography, and iconography. The findings reveal four prevalent visual motifs that consistently appear across the selected posters: the full moon, muted and desaturated colour schemes, fragmented or flawed bodies, and marginalised protagonists. Collectively, these recurring elements construct the cultural myth of the “Burtonesque” aesthetic, which extends beyond individual films, genres, and narrative contexts. The research also identifies a transition in the marketing approach, shifting from an emphasis on Burton’s identity and reputation as a distinctive filmmaker toward greater attention to his previous commercial achievements. Overall, this study demonstrates that film posters function not merely as promotional materials but also as visual texts that actively construct and communicate a director’s authorial identity by integrating auteur theory with Barthesian semiotics.

Abstract

Aceh has many historical buildings that require accurate documentation, including Mesjid Tuha Lam Ura in Ateuk Monpanah Village, Simpang Tiga District, Aceh Besar Regency, which has been designated as a Cultural Heritage Site. However, many people are still unaware of its existence. The mosque has unique architectural characteristics influenced by India, particularly its roof structure. It is also suspected that the mosque was built during the period of Dutch Indian influence in Aceh. Therefore, studying its architectural characteristics is important to introduce and preserve the mosque. This study aims to identify the architectural characteristics of Mesjid Tuha Lam Ura and examine the factors influencing them. A qualitative method was used to examine the mosque’s architectural expressions. Data were collected through observation, mapping, redrawing, literature studies, historical documentation, and interviews. The findings show Hindu architectural influences, particularly in the overlapping roof structure resembling a shield. The mosque also has walls approximately 60 cm high, functioning as a boundary between the interior and exterior. These characteristics suggest that the original structure may have been adapted from a Hindu temple into a mosque. This research provides information about the mosque’s architectural characteristics and supports its preservation as a historical landmark in Aceh.
