Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine and find data about the attitudes experienced or felt by students or attitudes that often appear in class in learning English in class. To obtain the data, researchers used a research tool, namely Observation Checklist. This type of research was qualitative using descriptive methods. The subject in this study was a class VIII student at SMP Negeri 2 Bangkala Barat while the object used was 20 students. The results of this study that have been obtained are students' attitudes in English in class, feelings of fear and shame of students including fear of communication or speaking or reading in front of the class. Based on the three aspects of the attitude discussed in this study, researchers found that in the aspect of behavior there were 30% or as many as 6 students who had that attitude, whereas in aspects of cognitive attitudes there were 20% or as many students who had this attitude and aspects Emotional attitude is 90% or as many as 18 students who have that attitude. In addition in this study, researchers used coding techniques to explain the results that had been obtained during the study

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the factors of students speaking anxiety, the strategies used by students in overcoming anxiety in speaking English and the type of anxiety experienced by students when speaking English. This type of research is qualitative using descriptive method. The sampled in this research are students majoring in English education, semester 3 as many as 8 students. The instrument used in this research are observation and interview. The results of this research showed that there are 3 factors causing students' to feel anxiety, namely 3 students experienced communication apprehension, 2 students experienced test anxiety and 3 students who experienced fear of negative evaluation. The researcher also find out  3 types of anxiety that the students experienced in their speaking anxiety, the most dominant factor is situation specific anxiety, following by state anxiety and trait anxiety. The most dominant strategy used by students is positive thinking following by Preparation, Relaxation, Peer Seeking and Resignation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the cultural value of tengko situru' (togetherness) in learning English. It is described in previous research that there is a close relationship between character education, values and culture, where value education cannot be separated from character education as well as culture which is one aspect formation of character education. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The subjects in this study were four English teachers at SMK Negeri 1 Toraja Utara. The results of the research show that in the process of learning English the teachers introduce and apply the cultural values of tengko situru' in learning English. This can be seen from the interaction of students during the learning process.
