Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the fear experienced or felt by students in oral English presentations and strategies used to overcome fear in oral English presentation. This type of research is qualitative using descriptive method. the sample in this study were students majoring in English education, semester 4 as many as 15 students. The power obtained by using a questionnaire and which is open-ended and then analyzed descriptively. The results of the research obtained are Student Fear of Oral English Presentations in Higher Education, students experience and feel types of fear which include fear of communication, fear of negative evaluation and fear of test. The strategy used in overcoming fear in oral English presentations are the first strategy that focuses on the problem called problem focused coping, for example exercise, making important notes, and seeking support and the second strategy that focuses on emotions is called emotion focused coping, for example self-control, staying away and positive thinking.

Abstract

The research subjects were 8th grade students of SMPN in Barru. This study uses a qualitative method. This research design uses observation, interviews, and documentation, which consists of data reduction, display, and conclusion. This study revealed that the aspects of emotional exhaustion, physical exhaustion, mental fatigue and loss of learning motivation experienced by students when studying online caused some students to experience the impact of learning saturation during the COVID-19 pandemic and various factors that supported the occurrence of burnout, including consisting of: personal characteristics, social support and academic burden. Individuals who have low self-concept, are too perfectionist and idealistic, are unable to control their emotions and are less skilled in managing stress, experience learning saturation. The social support relates to the learning environment and the relationship between teachers, students and parents. While the academic burden in question is presenting too many or too few assignments, it certainly affect student learning outcomes, especially if the teacher also does not provide adequate explanations.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the learning strategy are used by English Debaters in Speakng Skill at UKM BAHASA Universitas Muhammadiyah and the reason why do the English debaters use those strategy. The data were collected in July 2022 from 5 debaters of UKM BAHASA Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. This research used a descriptive qualitative method, and the instruments used an interview. The findings of this research show that learning strategy are used by English Debaters in Speakng Skill at UKM BAHASA Universitas Muhammadiyah are Watching video on YouTube, Read articles, Group discussion, Self-correction, and Self-talk strategy. The result of the interview of this research showed that mostly the reason why do debaters used those strategies because the strategies are easy to access, easy to imitiate and they can do wherever and whenever they wants to enjoy it.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the teachers’ strategies in overcoming student’ anxiety in speaking English and students’ perception toward the strategies used by the teacher to overcome student’ anxiety in speaking English at SMAN 1 Gowa. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The data was collected through observation checklist and semi-structured interview. The participants were the English teachers and students of at SMAN 1 Gowa. The researcher took 6 students from 3 classes; the X IPS1, XI IPA1, and XII IPA5 class and there English teachers.The findings showed about the teachers’ strategies to overcome students’ anxiety in speaking English and students’ perceptions toward the strategies used by the teachers. First, there were three strategies that were used by the teachers. The teacher who teaches at X IPS1 (T1) used playing games strategy, the teacher two who teaches at XI IPA1 (T2) used question and answer strategy, and the last teacher who teacher at XII IPA5 (T3) used guess word strategy in overcoming students’  anxiety in speaking English. Second, every single students who became respondents in this research said that they agree with the strategies used by the teacher can overcome their anxiety in speaking English.

Abstract

This study aims to find out kinds of Culture shock for Thai student of universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar and the obstacles of the psychological adjustment of Thai student. The subject in this study were 3 people of Thai students at English Department in universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar.The research methodology used descriptive qualitative method. The technique of collecting data was interview with 5 questions that talking about cultural shock and psychological adjustment. The findings of this research according to the observation made by the researcher on the 3 informants that on that have been describe previously it is known that cultural shock experienced are daily language factors, social factors, and cultural factors. The obstacle of psychological adjustment of Thai students there are several factors, namely psychal condition, language, culture and environment.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the factors that can influence students’ intrinsic motivation in learning English. This research was in descriptive quantitative method. The population of this research was the students of SMPN 2 Binongko, namely first grade. By applying simple random sampling technique, the sample of this research was 6 students from the first grade. Research instrument used for collecting the data was questionnaire. It consisted of 10 items about intrinsic motivation.The result showed that, in this research researcher analyzed factors that can influence students’ intrinsic motivation in learning English by intrinsic motivation is self-confidence that is owned by each students.  The data students’ intrinsic motivation was 55.92% in the first grade.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the stimulus response used by the teachers and how do teachers provide stimulus to students in English learning at SMA Negeri 5 Enrekang.The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. This research used a semi-structured interview as an instrument to collect the data. This research used ten questions as a data collection instrument. The subjects in this research were teachers of SMA Negeri 5 Enrekang. The research subjects consisted of three teachers.The result of this research show that teachers apply all types of stimulus in the teaching and learning process such as the application the law of readiness, the law of exercise, and the law of effect in English learning. Teachers apply the law of readiness to ensure the readiness of students in receiving material for example by checking student attendance. As for the application the law of exercises was used by teachers to ensure students’ understanding of the material that has been given, for example, by providing questions to be done individually, and the application the law of effect itself was used by teachers to reward students for what they achieved during the learning process, for example giving praise and good grades. The stimulus used was very beneficial to increase their learning motivation, especially in English Learning process.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana perilaku siswa selama proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris berlangsung baik dari segi perilaku positif maupun perilaku negatif siswa di SMP Negeri 2 Tanete Rilau. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif yang melibatkan satu jenis instrumen dalam pengumpulan data yaitu wawancara. Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 2 Tanete Rilau yang terdiri dari satu kelas. Objek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII.Data dianalisis dengan melihat perilaku siswa selama proses pembelajaran.Dampak yang dialami siswa selama proses pembelajaran adalah dampak positif dan dampak negatif. Dampak positifnya siswa dapat membantu sebagian pekerjaan orang tuanya di rumah, siswa tidak merasa lelah di sekolah. Sedangkan dampak negatif yang dialami siswa adalah tidak pahamnya materi pembelajaran, kurangnya akses internet yang terkadang kehabisan kuota saat pembelajaran.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the factors that cause students' anxiety in speaking performances and to determine the level of student anxiety in speaking performances in 3rd semester students, especially in speaking courses for the intermediate level at Muhammadiyah University of Makkassar.This research is a descriptive qualitative with a case study conducted on 8 students in semester 3. It consists of interviews and checklist observations. Each interview was used to find out the factors that cause students' anxiety in speaking performances. While, the observation checklist was carried out to determine the level of students‟ anxiety in speaking performance.The results of the study indicate that there are 2 factors that cause student anxiety, namely internal factors and external factors. Internal factors and external factors are very influential on students' anxiety on speaking performance. This can be seen from the results of data analysis at the student level in speaking performance. Therefore, it can be concluded that the factors that cause students‟ anxiety in speaking performance were internal and external factors. While at the level of students‟ anxiety there are three types, namely: low level of anxiety, medium level of anxiety and high level of anxiety.

Abstract

This research aimed to reveal what were the strategies used by the lecturers in teaching speaking during the covid-19 pandemic. This research used qualitative research. The subject of this research was two speaking lecturers who taught at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. The instruments of this research were observation and interview. The technique of data analysis used the miles and Huberman model; data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result of this research revealed six kinds of strategies that were applied by the two subjects. They were; (1) questioning strategy, (2) games strategy, (3) multimedia presentation strategy, (4) reward and punishment strategy, (5) a time token strategy, and (6) drilling strategy.
