Abstract

Background: Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) remain a significant public health issue in Indonesia, particularly among vulnerable groups such as toddlers. Efforts to control ARIs do not rely solely on health services but also require health advocacy to raise public awareness and secure support from various stakeholders. Objective: This study aims to analyze the health advocacy strategies used to support ARI control programs in Indonesia. Methods: This study employed a literature review using a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained from ten scientific articles in Indonesian published between 2022 and 2026 and retrieved via Google Scholar. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis techniques. Results: The findings indicate that health advocacy strategies for ARI control are primarily implemented at the community level through health education, the use of health communication media, and community empowerment. These strategies have been shown to improve knowledge, awareness, and preventive behaviors regarding ARI. Training of health cadres and active community participation also play a role in supporting the success of ARI control programs. However, studies related to advocacy at the policy level including regulatory aspects and health budget support remain relatively limited. Conclusion: Health advocacy plays a crucial role in supporting ARI control by improving health literacy and community engagement. To ensure the sustainability of these programs, advocacy efforts must be strengthened at the institutional and policy levels.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes is increasingly common in children and adolescents. Lifestyle choices such as obesity, lack of physical activity, and unhealthy diets are becoming increasingly popular among adolescents. An unhealthy lifestyle is influenced by many factors, including inadequate knowledge and attitudes regarding diabetes mellitus prevention. Good knowledge will foster positive attitudes regarding diabetes mellitus prevention. Through booklets, a person's knowledge and attitudes can be improved. The objective was to determine the effect of booklets on knowledge and attitudes regarding diabetes mellitus prevention in adolescent girls. The method used was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design with a control group. This study was conducted at SMAN 1 Jasinga and SMK Giri Taruna. A sample of 70 students was used using a stratified random sampling technique. Data collection used a questionnaire as the research instrument. The data analysis techniques used were the Independent T-test and Chi-square test. The results showed an effect of booklets on knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus prevention in adolescent girls (p-value 0.003). There was a correlation between knowledge and attitudes regarding diabetes mellitus prevention in adolescent girls (p-value 0.016). The booklet can be used as an educational tool for adolescents, and educators can be more active in providing education about diabetes mellitus prevention to students, especially adolescent girls.

Abstract

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) remains a major public health concern worldwide due to its significant contribution to neonatal morbidity and mortality, as well as its long-term adverse health consequences. Pregnancy intention has been identified as a potential determinant of adverse birth outcomes; however, evidence regarding its association with LBW remains inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the association between pregnancy intention and low birth weight in Indonesia using data from the 2012 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS). A cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from the 2012 IDHS. The study included 8,922 married women aged 15–49 years who had a singleton live birth within five years preceding the survey. Pregnancy intention was categorized as intended, mistimed, and unwanted. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between pregnancy intention and LBW after controlling for potential confounding variables. The prevalence of LBW was 6.2%. After adjustment for maternal age and antenatal care (ANC) visits, no significant association was found between mistimed pregnancy and LBW (AOR = 1.055; 95% CI: 0.765–1.454). An interaction effect was identified between unwanted pregnancy and pregnancy complications. Women with unwanted pregnancies accompanied by pregnancy complications had a higher risk of delivering LBW infants compared with women whose pregnancies were intended and without complications. Nevertheless, pregnancy intention was not significantly associated with LBW overall after adjustment for confounding factors. Maternal age outside the optimal reproductive age range (<20 years or >35 years) and inadequate ANC utilization were significantly associated with an increased risk of LBW. Pregnancy intention was not independently associated with low birth weight among Indonesian women after controlling for maternal and healthcare-related factors. Maternal age and antenatal care utilization were more consistent determinants of LBW. Strengthening maternal health services, particularly adequate antenatal care and early detection of pregnancy complications, may contribute to reducing the burden of low birth weight in Indonesia.

Abstract

Type II Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder commonly found in the elderly due to insulin resistance and impaired pancreatic hormone secretion. This condition leads to elevated blood glucose levels, physical weakness, and decreased daily activity performance, which ultimately reduces quality of life. Blood glucose control can be achieved not only through pharmacological therapy but also by applying non-pharmacological approaches such as progressive muscle relaxation therapy. This study aims to determine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation therapy on blood glucose levels in elderly patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus. This research employed a case study method involving Mrs. A, an elderly patient experiencing hyperglycemia with a fasting blood glucose level of 247 mg/dl. The intervention was carried out over three consecutive days, consisting of progressive muscle relaxation exercises for 15–20 minutes per session, accompanied by dietary education, light physical exercise, and fall prevention guidance. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and blood glucose measurements before and after the intervention. The results showed a decrease in blood glucose level from 215 mg/dl to 158 mg/dl after three therapy sessions. The patient appeared more relaxed, experienced reduced fatigue, improved sleep quality, and demonstrated better urinary control. Conclusion: progressive muscle relaxation therapy is effective in lowering blood glucose levels and improving both physical and psychological conditions in elderly patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) remains a major public health problem in Indonesia. Based on the 2025 National Health Reporting System survey, ARI ranked first among diseases with the highest number of cases, reaching more than 14.5 million cases. This study aimed to determine and analyze the relationship between environmental sanitation and nutritional status with the incidence of ARI among children under five following flood disasters in the working area of Panteraja Community Health Center, Pidie Jaya Regency. The study employed a quantitative method with an analytical observational design using a case-control approach. The dependent variable was the incidence of ARI among under-five children, while the independent variables were environmental sanitation and nutritional status. The sample consisted of 122 children under five, including 61 children with ARI and 61 children without ARI. The results of the chi-square test showed a significant relationship between environmental sanitation and ARI incidence (p = 0.000; OR = 0.042; 95% CI = 0.014–0.133), as well as between nutritional status and ARI incidence (p = 0.000; OR = 0.011; 95% CI = 0.001–0.083). These findings indicate that poor environmental sanitation and inadequate nutritional status contribute to the occurrence of ARI among children under five after flooding. Therefore, promotive and preventive efforts, along with regular monitoring of children's nutritional status, are essential to reduce the risk of ARI.

Abstract

Partographs are an important instrument in labor monitoring that functions to detect complications early, monitor labor progress, and support appropriate clinical decision-making. However, incomplete filling of partographs is still a problem in various health service facilities and has the potential to affect the quality of midwifery services. This study aims to find out the completeness of filling in the partograph in childbirth monitoring at the Wajo Health Center UPTD Baubau City. This study uses a quantitative method with a descriptive design. The research population is all partograph documents for the period November 2025 to March 2026 as many as 40 documents. The sampling technique used total sampling and obtained 32 documents that met the research criteria. Data were collected using an observation checklist sheet and analyzed univariately through frequency and percentage distributions. The results showed that as many as 28 documents (87.5%) had not been fully filled out and only 4 documents (12.5%) had been filled in completely. The components with the highest level of completeness were uterine contractions (100%), drugs and fluids (96.9%), and labor progress (93.8%). Meanwhile, the components of maternal information (12.5%) and maternal condition (31.3%) had the lowest level of completeness. Most of the filling of partographs at the Wajo Health Center UPTD still does not meet the completeness standards. It is necessary to strengthen supervision, training, and periodic monitoring to improve the quality of childbirth documentation and support the safety of mothers and babies

Abstract

Adolescents have low levels of physical activity, one of which is caused by poor perceptions of the components of the Health Belief Model (HBM), while a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of long-term health problems. This study aims to describe the HBM (perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action) in students before counseling, and analyze the differences in HBM (perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers) after counseling with film media. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a cross-sectional approach, involving 51 eighth-grade students of SMP PGRI 363 Pondok Petir who were selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using pre-test and post-test questionnaires, then analyzed descriptively using the median as the cut-off point. The results showed an increase in all four HBM constructs evaluated: perceived susceptibility increased by 50.0% (median 14 to 21), perceived severity increased by 44.4% (18 to 26), perceived benefits increased by 44.0% (25 to 36), and perceived barriers increased by 54.5% (11 to 17). Before the counseling, the majority of students were in the medium category for self-efficacy (65%) and cues to action (96%), but these two constructs were not re-evaluated after the counseling. Further research is needed to fully measure the increase in students' HBM perceptions of physical activity through film media.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that requires long-term pharmacological therapy, increasing the risk of Drug Related Problems (DRPs). DRPs can affect the success of therapy, increase the risk of complications, and reduce the patient's quality of life. This article aims to identify the use of antidiabetic drugs, the characteristics of DRPs, and their clinical implications. The method used was a literature review of articles from 2016-2026 that are relevant to the analysis of DRPs in diabetes mellitus patients. The results of the study indicate that metformin is the most widely used antidiabetic drug, both as a single therapy and in combination. The dominant types of DRPs include drug interactions, inappropriate drug selection, inappropriate dosages, omissions from therapy, and use of drugs without indications. These DRPs can cause hypoglycemia, failure to achieve glycemic control targets, an increased risk of complications, and increased duration and cost of treatment. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that DRPs remain a challenge in the management of diabetes mellitus therapy, requiring more optimal monitoring and an active role of pharmacists through medication review to improve the safety, effectiveness, and quality of treatment.

Abstract

First-year medical students are particularly vulnerable to psychological problems due to the challenges of adapting to a new academic environment and increased academic demands, which may adversely affect their academic performance. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) is a widely used instrument for assessing psychological functioning and personality characteristics. This study aimed to examine the correlation between MMPI-2 results and first-semester Grade Point Average (GPA) among first-year medical students enrolled in the 2025/2026 academic year at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pattimura. This analytical observational study employed a cross-sectional design with a total sampling technique. Secondary data, including MMPI-2 results and first-semester GPA, were obtained from 146 eligible students. Spearman's rank correlation test was used to analyze the association between MMPI-2 scales and academic performance. Most students demonstrated MMPI-2 profiles within the normal range across both clinical and supplementary scales. However, the highest proportions of clinically elevated scores were observed on the Schizophrenia (Sc), Psychasthenia (Pt), and Depression (D) clinical scales, while the supplementary scales with the highest elevated scores were Addiction Admission (AAS), Hostility (Ho), and Anxiety (A). Correlation analysis showed that only Hypochondriasis (Hs) and Depression (D) were significantly and negatively associated with first-semester GPA among the clinical scales. Among the supplementary scales, Anxiety (A) and College Maladjustment (Mt) showed significant negative correlations with GPA, whereas Ego Strength (Es), Dominance (Do), and Addiction Potential (APS) showed significant positive correlations.

Abstract

Bali frangipani (Plumeria rubra L.) is a medicinal plant traditionally used in Indonesia and is known to contain various bioactive secondary metabolites. This study aimed to identify and characterize the secondary metabolite compounds present in the ethanol extract of Bali frangipani stem bark through phytochemical screening, fractionation, chromatographic separation, and determination of total flavonoid content. The research employed an experimental laboratory design with a descriptive qualitative approach. Stem bark was extracted by reflux using 96% ethanol, followed by liquid-liquid fractionation, column chromatography, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), preparative TLC, and two-dimensional TLC. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of alkaloids and saponins, whereas flavonoids, tannins, and steroids/triterpenoids were not detected in the crude extract. Column chromatography of the ethyl acetate fraction yielded 28 fractions that were combined into five sub-fractions. TLC analysis identified three major spots, and the flavonoid-like compound was successfully isolated as isolate A, exhibiting yellow-green fluorescence under UV 366 nm with an Rf value of 0.30–0.34. Two-dimensional TLC demonstrated a single spot, indicating satisfactory purity. Total flavonoid content, determined using the AlCl₃ colorimetric method with quercetin as the reference standard, was 4.883 mg QE/g extract (4.883%), indicating a relatively low flavonoid level according to the Indonesian Herbal Pharmacopoeia. These findings contribute to understanding the phytochemical profile of Bali frangipani stem bark and support its potential application in pharmaceutical and natural product research.
