Abstract

Background: This study developed and evaluated an innovative recreational sport-based board game, the Sport Monopoly Game Physical Fitness, as a learning medium to enhance Grade V elementary students’ engagement and understanding of physical-fitness material during Physical Education (PJOK) lessons.. Methods: research and development (R&D) design adapted from the Borg & Gall model included needs analysis, data collection, product design, expert validation, small-group trials, iterative revisions, large-group field testing, and dissemination. Participants were Grade V students (classes VA/VB) at SDN Balongsari I/500, Surabaya (small group n = 14; large group n = 60). Data were collected through observation, needs-analysis questionnaires, student-response questionnaires, and documentation. Descriptive statistics (means and feasibility percentages) were calculated using Microsoft Excel, and qualitative comments were summarized. . Results: Small-group testing produced a total score of 893, a mean of 4.30 (“good”), and 86.9% feasibility. Large-group testing produced a total score of 1,595, a mean of 4.55 (“good”), and 91.15% feasibility. Prior expert validations showed feasibility values of 82.7% (material expert) and 83.6% (media expert). Conclusions: The Sport Monopoly Game Physical Fitness as an innovative recreational game, along with its guidebook, is feasible and suitable as supplementary media for Grade V PJOK physical-fitness lessons, and can enhance students’ enthusiasm for recreational sport-based learning and physical activity.

Abstract

Background: As older adults age, they experience a decrease in muscle mass and strength (sarcopenia), which increases the risk of falls and impacts morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. However, evidence on the relationship between handgrip strength and balance, as measured using the timed up and go test, in community-dwelling older adults is still limited, particularly in Indonesia. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between handgrip strength and balance in older adults. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional study design. The sample size in this study was 35 female individuals who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The handgrip strength test used a handgrip dynamometer. Meanwhile, the balance test was measured with a time up and go test. Data normality analysis used the Shapiro Wilk test method (p-value > 0.05), and Pearson correlation to analyze the relationship between two variables (p-value < 0.05). Results: There was a significant negative correlation between the average right HGS (16.63 kg) and TUG (p-value 0.001 and r-value -0.600) and the average left HGS (15.39 kg) and TUG (p-value 0.002 and r-value -0.513). Conclusions: :  This study shows that dominant handgrip strength in community-dwelling older women is significantly correlated with balance and mobility. These findings expand the evidence in Indonesia that dominant handgrip strength has the potential to be used as an early screening indicator for functional mobility in older adults.

Abstract

Background: Physical activity is recognized as an important determinant of adolescent health; however, the relationship between physical activity levels and a healthy lifestyle does not always show a consistent pattern across different environmental contexts. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between physical activity and healthy lifestyle among boarding school students. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed, involving 40 twelfth-grade students residing at Al-Masoem Islamic Boarding School. Physical activity was measured using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), while healthy lifestyle was assessed with the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP-II). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation tests, and comparisons based on gender, body mass index, and frequency of returning home. Results: he results indicated a significant and strong positive relationship between physical activity and overall healthy lifestyle. However, differences in physical activity by gender were not accompanied by differences in healthy lifestyle, and no significant differences were found based on body mass index categories or frequency of returning home. Conclusions: These findings suggest that high physical activity in the boarding school environment is largely influenced by institutional structure and does not fully reflect the internalization of a healthy lifestyle. The study emphasizes the importance of health promotion approaches that consider environmental context and psychosocial factors to support sustainable healthy behaviors among adolescents. Abstract

Background: Sports nutrition knowledge is an essential competency for personal trainers in supporting client health, safety, and fitness goal attainment. This study aimed to determine the level of sports nutrition knowledge among personal trainers and to identify the relationships among nutrition knowledge components. Methods: A descriptive quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was applied. A total of 102 personal trainers in Surabaya were recruited using convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Abridged Nutrition for Sport Knowledge Questionnaire (A-NSKQ), which assesses general nutrition knowledge, sports nutrition knowledge, and supplement knowledge. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis with Spearman rank correlation tests Results: Most personal trainers demonstrated a low level of sports nutrition knowledge (69.6%), and total A-NSKQ scores were predominantly classified as low (60.8%). General nutrition knowledge was classified as moderate to good and was not accompanied by adequate sports nutrition knowledge. Correlation analysis revealed significant positive relationships between general nutrition knowledge, sports nutrition knowledge, and total A-NSKQ scores. Conclusions: The level of sports nutrition knowledge among personal trainers in Surabaya remains low. These findings indicate the need for competency development through evidence-based sports nutrition education and training to enable personal trainers to provide accurate, safe, and effective nutrition recommendations in support of client fitness goals.

Abstract

Background: Monitoring training load is essential for optimizing performance while minimizing injury risk in endurance athletes. However, evidence linking daily workload fluctuations and injury occurrence in runners remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between daily training load, accumulated workload, and injury occurrence in distance runners using a longitudinal time-series dataset. Methods: A retrospective observational design was used to analyze longitudinal training data from 74 distance runners, comprising 42,766 daily observations. Training-load variables included total running distance, intensity zones, sprint distance, strength training participation, and perceived recovery indicators. Injury occurrence was recorded as a binary outcome (injury vs. no injury). Logistic regression and workload-ratio analysis were applied to evaluate associations between training load variables and injury risk. Results: The analysis identified 583 injury events across the observation period. Higher accumulated running volume and greater fluctuations in daily workload were associated with an increased likelihood of injury. In addition, reduced perceived recovery scores were linked to a higher probability of injury occurrence, suggesting the importance of internal load monitoring alongside external training metrics. Conclusions: Variations in workload progression and insufficient recovery may contribute to injury risk in distance runners. Monitoring training load accumulation and recovery indicators may help coaches and practitioners implement more effective load-management strategies to reduce injury risk while maintaining performance development.
