Abstract

This study examines the relationship between peer feedback and speaking anxiety among EFL students in debate and public speaking classes. Using a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 82 participants using the Peer-Feedback Orientation Scale (PFOS) and the Public Speaking Class Anxiety Scale (PSCAS). Spearman correlation analysis revealed no significant relationship between peer feedback and speaking anxiety (r = -0.027; p = 0.808). These results indicate that while peer feedback improves critical thinking, engagement, and language performance, it does not directly reduce speaking anxiety. A holistic approach combining peer feedback with anxiety-reduction strategies is recommended. Future research should explore the long-term effects of such interventions in diverse cultural contexts.

Abstract

Nowadays, incorporating technology into language instruction is crucial for enhancing students' speaking abilities, particularly in a professional setting. One of the fundamental skills in learning English is speaking, which is crucial for students in the tourism industry attending vocational high schools (SMK). This is due to the fact that the tourism industry needs employees who can interact with foreign visitors in a variety of service contexts. This study employs the ADDE (Analysis, Design, Development, and Evaluation) learning approach in conjunction with the design and development (DnD) model put forth by Richey & Klein, (2005). The goal of the design and development strategy is to produce an attractive infographic that will aid English teachers at Buleleng's vocational high schools in better understanding how to teach speaking with CakeApp. The goal of this project is to create infographics that teach speaking skills to SMK Pariwisata class XII students using the Cakeapp application. In addition, the results of expert validation show that the resulting infographics are of very high quality, with an average validation value of 91.5% given by experts. Based on these findings, it shows that the use of CakeApp-based infographics helps tourism students practice speaking skills effectively. The practical implication of this study is that teachers at tourism vocational schools can use this CakeApp-based infographic to support students' speaking learning process in class.

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the significant difference of students’ vocabulary mastery between those who are taught by using digital crossword and those who are with conventional learning by using small group discussion learning method. This study also explore students' perceptions of using digital crosswords in learning English vocabulary for 7th-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Singaraja. This research was a sequential explanatory mixed method design. In this study, the sample was divided into two groups, which are an experimental group and the control group. The research instruments used were post-test, questionnaire and interview. The post-test was used to collect students' scores in investigating the significant difference of digital crosswords. Meanwhile, questionnaire and interview were used to obtain students' perceptions of using digital crosswords in learning vocabulary. The questionnaire was designed based on the Technology Acceptance Theory (TAM) by Davis (1989). The results showed that after learning with digital crosswords, there was a significant difference on students' vocabulary mastery. students who were taught by digital crosswords have increased vocabulary mastery more than students who were taught by conventional learning. The result showed positive perceptions of students after using digital crosswords. Students feel interested and actively participate in learning. This study implies that digital crosswords can be used as an effective media to improve students' vocabulary mastery and interest in English.

Abstract

This qualitative phenomenological study investigates the perceptions and experiences of EFL vocational high school students in using the ELSA Speak application to improve their speaking skills. The research involved 25 tenth-grade students from a vocational school in Mojokerto, East Java, Indonesia. To collect data, questionnaires and interviews are employed. The findings indicate that ELSA Speak positively influenced students’ motivation, self-confidence, and pronunciation accuracy, largely due to its instant feedback and supportive, non-judgmental environment. Moreover, students appreciated the app's flexibility and ease of integration into their daily routines, which enabled them to engage in self-paced learning beyond the constraints of traditional classrooms. Nonetheless, they also encountered challenges such as speech recognition inaccuracies, reliance on internet connectivity, and subscription-related limitations. While students found the app effective for improving technical aspects of speaking, they viewed it as a complementary resource rather than a replacement for classroom interaction. The study recommends integrating ELSA Speak into the language learning curriculum for focused skill practice, while also addressing technical and accessibility issues to enhance its effectiveness.

Abstract

Mental translation, the internal process of formulating ideas in a first language (L1) before expressing them in a second language (L2), remains a common yet underexplored strategy among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. In Indonesia, where academic writing in English is a key component of university education, students frequently rely on this process, particularly during complex writing tasks. This study investigates how Indonesian EFL students experience and perceive mental translation during English writing. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from 60 students at ITB STIKOM Bali through open-ended questionnaires and follow-up interviews. Thematic analysis revealed that students often begin the writing process by thinking in Indonesian, especially when working on formal or cognitively demanding texts. While many find mental translation helpful for organizing thoughts and reducing anxiety, it also contributes to slower writing speed, overthinking, and a reliance on digital translation tools. The study draws on Flower and Hayes’s (1981) Cognitive Process Theory of Writing, Kroll and Stewart’s (1994) Revised Hierarchical Model, and Vygotsky’s (1978) Sociocultural Theory to interpret mental translation not as a sign of linguistic deficiency, but as a mediational strategy that supports meaning-making. The findings highlight the need for more inclusive EFL writing instruction that acknowledges mental translation as a valid part of students’ cognitive process, while also encouraging gradual development of direct composition in English.

Abstract

Speaking proficiency is a crucial component of English language learning, particularly for students preparing to become future English teachers. However, many learners face challenges in developing oral competence due to low confidence and limited self-efficacy. This study investigates the correlation between speaking self-efficacy and speaking skill among fourth-semester undergraduate students of the English Language Education Department (ELED) at I Gusti Bagus Sugriwa State Hindu University Denpasar. A total of 65 students participated as respondents. The research employed a quantitative correlational design, using a self-efficacy questionnaire to measure students’ beliefs about their speaking abilities and a speaking test to assess their oral performance. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s product-moment correlation. The findings revealed a statistically significant but low positive correlation (r = .302, p = .015) between speaking self-efficacy and speaking skill. This suggests that while self-efficacy contributes to speaking performance, it is not the only factor influencing students’ oral competence. Other variables such as motivation, anxiety, and exposure to authentic communication may also play an important role. The study concludes that fostering students’ speaking self-efficacy through supportive learning environments and communicative activities can enhance their speaking skills and better prepare them for their future roles as English teachers.
