Abstract

This study aims at describing how the students can improve their speakingskill and that also part of the teachers’ job. A teacher is expected to have rightteaching techniques to provide students with appropriate teaching materials and tocreate a positive classroom environment. The data of this study were collectedthrough observations, planning, action, and reflection, some of the researchers wereconducted in two cycles. The data were obtained by interviewing the Englishteachers and students. The result of this study showed that the speaking skill canimproved through guessing games. These were confirmed by the data on thefinding and discussion in the researchers’ article

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate whether the usage of songs and authenticvideos were able to increase students listening ability. The purpose was to find outwhether the students who taught by songs and authentic videos achieved betterimprovement to compare to those who did not. Most of the researchers usedexperimental methods. The questionnaire and data collection were used to analyzehow this activity affected. The students who were taught using song and authenticvideo got better outcomes rather than those who were taught using the usual. Thequestionnaire responses showed that the students preferred the authentic listeningmaterials. Those were more interesting and more related to their real-life context sothat it could motivate them to give more attention to the listening class and this alsoassisted them to improve their listening ability.

Abstract

This study focused on the analysis of linguistic strategies differences between men and women which was to investigate the linguistic strategies applied by male and female post graduate students of the English Education Program of UNDIKSHA Singaraja. This study was designed by using descriptive qualitative approach in which the data collected were analyzed qualitatively. The researcher acted as non-participant observer in which the data were gathered by recording the conversation done. The result of the data analysis showed that the data show that during the daily conversation, it can be found that the linguistic strategies applied by both male and female speakers. They use this kind of strategy in order to express their opinion or feeling. Moreover, from those conversations, the data which was related to the strategies was got. Based on data, it can be concluded that male and female post graduate students of the English Education Program of UNDIKSHA Singaraja, differ in applying linguistic strategies during their daily conversation. In having a conversation, men interrupt more than women and women show their silence response more often in their conversation rituals. Moreover, in raising the conversation topic, both men and women have different topic to be talked about. Men tend to speak about something which can put them in competitive situation, such as game whereas women tend to speak about something that can make them stand in the middle of solidarity, such as feelings. Besides, men also use indirectness to convey something that can low their status but women use indirectness because they felt they had lower status than men and they wanted to get pleasant experience of getting one’s way not because one demands it (power) but because the other person wants the same thing (solidarity).

Abstract

The written text can not be separated from using prepositional phrase, becauseprepositional phrase makes a sentence complete grammatically. In this research, there wasan aim that has to be achieved. Namely: to determine the structures of prepositional phrase.This research was descriptive qualitative-quantitative research. The data sources of thisresearch were taken from phrases that have prepositional phrase in 50 articles of law. In thisresearch, corpus linguistic was used as the method of collecting data. Corpus linguistic usedan application in computer. It was AntConc3.2.4w2011. The results of the analysis werepresented by using formal and informal technique. The structures of prepositional phrasefound were 4 structures. They are prep + det + noun, prep + det + adj + noun, prep + noun, andprep + adj + noun. These structures were found based on some words as triggers in thesoftware of corpus linguistics. Namely: down the, up the, around the, into the, with the, withinthe, through, in spite of, instead of, in the, at the and out of.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analysed the Instrumental Motivation of Englishonline learning during pandemic covid-19. Teachers and learners must be consistent incarrying out learning in special conditions nowadays. A teacher has very important rolein fostering student motivation to take part in online learning, so the failures in theprocess of transferring knowledge to students can be minimized. This research isquantitative and descriptive qualitative study to examine Instrumental motivation inonline learning during pandemic covid-19. The random sampling was used in this study.The questionnaire was used as an instrument in this study. The questionnaire consists of12 questions as a test of instrumental motivation which is divided into three differenttypes of questions such as: academic motivation, individual motivation and socialmotivation. The responses obtained from the participants were classified into fivecategories according to Gardner's Attitude and Motivation (Jefiza, 2017), such as; stronglyagree, agree, doubt, disagree and strongly disagree. It was found that the motivation ofstudents in online learning conducted in class was to finish on time. The total mean ofacademic aspect is 3.61 at the moderate level. Meanwhile, for the personal aspect, it wasfound that the value for the total mean of the personal aspect was 3.69 at a high level, andthe mean of social aspects on instrumental motivation was 3.89 at a high level. It can beshown that, the students still have high motivation in taking online learning even duringthe pandemic covid-19.

Abstract

In the process of producing a writing in English, students certainly experiencedifficulties since English is a foreign language as experienced by students of STMIKSTIKOM Indonesia. The preliminary observation showed that students have problem inall components of writing and tends to repeat the same mistakes. To overcome theseproblems, peer-correction techniques are implemented. This study was conducted toimprove students’ writing skill using peer-correction, find the most affected component ofwriting and show students’ responses. There are three steps in this study includingpretest, implementation of peer-correction and post-test. Pre-test was conducted at thebeggining of the meeting with the aim of knowing the initial ability of students’ writing.The implementation of peer-correction was conducted in two cycles which each cycleincluding planning, implementation of action, observation and final reflection. Post testwas conducted in each cycle to determine the ability of students’ writing afterimplementing peer-correction techniques. The result showed that the implementation ofpeer-correction techniques was able to improve students’ writing skill in terms of content,organization, vocabulary, language and mechanics in which content is the most affected.Moreover, students showed positive response toward the implementation of peercorrection.

Abstract

play gave a significant effect to the students’ speaking competency. Hand puppetsare dolls that are used as media or tools used in learning activities. Types of puppets thatare usually used are hand puppets made of pieces of cloth. Methods: The research designused a pre-experimental design with a one group pre-posttest design. The populationsused in this study were children in B group class in Santo Rafael Singaraja. The speakingmeasurement used an observation sheet in which it guided by a task. The sample sizeused is 30 respondents who have been selected using a total sampling technique. Thisstudy used parametric statistics using Paired Sample T-test with a significant level of α =0.05. Results: The results showed that the pre-test mean was 56.00, and the post-test meanwas 68.33. The results of parametric statistical tests using the Paired Sample T-testshowed pre and post results (0.000) <α (0.05), which means that H0 is rejected and Ha isaccepted. Conclusion: This shows that there is an influence of the role-play method byhand puppet media in speaking class of Santo Rafael Kindergarten Students.

Abstract

Transition signals are the essential elements to achieve a well-structured text. Theideas in the text need to connect to each other. It will be difficult for the reader tounderstand the sequence if the ideas are simply just exposed by the writer without beingrelated to each other. Students’ competency and ability in English academic writingoverviewed from their competence in constructing sentences. Therefore, this researchaimed to find out the use of transition signals and their accuracy in students’ communityservice report. The research used a descriptive quantitative method. The data were takenfrom students’ community service report written by the seventh semester Englishliterature students of Foreign Languages Study Program of Universitas MahasaraswatiDenpasar. The finding of this research showed that the total number of transition signalsused by the students in their community service report were 303 and classified into eighttypes of transition signals. Transition signals to introduce sequence and logically orderideas was mostly used and transition signals to emphasize ideas was least used by thestudents. Abstract

This study was conducted to gather sufficient information on the language use:code mixing, code switching, borrowing, pidginization, and creolization. The methodused in this study is through a literature study that collects several previous studies toanswer about code mixing, code switching, borrowing, pidginization, and creolizationpurposes. The results of this study that code can be a variety related to the element oflanguage like sentence, clause, phrase and word which have the limitation because thecode which is chosen by the speaker based on his/her necessity in communicating. Code-Mixing is the mix of code from two languages or more in some content of conversation inform of a sentence, while Code-Switching defined as a term which is used to indicateexchange of two or more languages, varieties of language, and can be also an exchange instyle. Moreover, Borrowing is the process of importing linguistic items from one linguisticsystem into another, a process that occurs any time two cultures are in contact over aperiod of time. Furthermore, Pidginization is a simplification of code of language whichhas arisen as the result of contact between people of different languages usually formed amixing of the languages. When pidgin develops to creole, it is described as creolization.Creole is a pidgin which is modified and appropriated in its structure and vocabulary.

Abstract

Reading has a very significant effect towards individuals’ life. English inIndonesia as a foreign language, so there are many possibilities which the Englishlanguage students get difficulties in understading reading text. EFL young learners arealso still struggling to overcome their reading problems. This research was conducted tofind out the EFL children’s reading problem. The data were collected throughquestionnare and explained descriptively. The questionnare consists of ten questionswhich is made based on the rubric of reading. The respondents of this research were the20 students from the fourth grade. The results of the research that the EFL children’sreading problem are students seldom pay attention to punctuation in reading English,students always have difficulty to distinguish the pronunciation of words in English,students always need a long time to understand the reading text in English, studentsnever look for the main idea of the reading text which they read, students have poorreading habit because they unusual read in English or seldom read in English, studentsseldom even never understand the grammar structures in English when reading, studentsnever even seldom pay attention to the form or the content of the reading text which theyread, students never apply any strategies in reading English, students lack of vocabularywhen reading English so that they need a dictionary to comprehend the reading text inEnglish, and students do not like or not interested reading English because they areseldom reading in English. Thus, the questionnare show the EFL children’ readingproblem.
