Abstract

This study examines the dual role of the Main Waste Bank (Bank Sampah Induk) in Semarang City as a driver of community participation and economic empowerment. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving waste bank managers, community members, and local government representatives. The findings reveal that citizen participation is primarily motivated by economic incentives (62% of respondents) and environmental awareness (38%), though challenges such as lack of outreach and time constraints persist. Economically, the waste bank contributes an additional monthly income of IDR 150,000–500,000 per member through waste sales and recycled product businesses, yet its sustainability is hindered by fluctuating recyclable market prices and limited infrastructure. Institutional support, such as local regulations (Perda No. 5/2019) and partnerships with recycling industries, emerges as a key enabling factor. The study highlights the potential of waste banks as a circular economy model but underscores the need for improved digital integration, capacity-building programs, and multi-stakeholder collaboration to ensure long-term impact. These findings contribute to broader discussions on community-based waste management and inclusive urban development in Indonesia.

Abstract

Metropolitan areas such as Semarang play a strategic role in driving regional and national economic growth. However, comprehensive insights into the city's economic-business future remain limited. This study aims to map global research trends related to urban economic-business issues through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) combined with bibliometric analysis, using Scopus metadata as the primary source. Employing the PRISMA framework, the study analyzed 93 relevant documents (20092024) with the support of Bibliometrix R and VOSviewer software. The results show a significant increase in global academic attention to urban economic topics, particularly concerning sustainability, MSME digitalization, public sector governance transformation, and strategic leadership. Four major thematic clusters were identified: (1) consumer behavior and value-based business practices, (2) public organizational culture and digital entrepreneurship, (3) digital innovation and competitive social capital in MSMEs, and (4) green leadership and sustainable urban governance. Keyword co-occurrence visualization highlighted the prominence of themes such as sustainability, circular economy, and competitive advantage in global research narratives. The study emphasizes the need to integrate technology, local values, and collaborative governance to formulate adaptive and knowledge-based development strategies. Furthermore, the global bibliometric findings serve as a conceptual foundation for envisioning the future trajectory of Semarang's economic-business landscape, offering reflective insights for policymakers, academics, and entrepreneurs aiming to enhance the city's competitiveness and sustainability.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of the PENA Program on the digitalization of women-led MSMEs in Semarang City and its implications for empowerment and business sustainability. Using a qualitative approach with thematic analysis as the main method, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with eleven female MSME entrepreneurs participating in the PENA Program. Results show that around 73% of respondents experienced significant improvements in digital adoption, particularly in e-commerce, digital payment, and social media marketing. Three main themes emerged: (1) enhanced digital capabilities through structured mentoring, (2) empowerment through increased visibility and self-confidence, and (3) persistent challenges such as time constraints and limited infrastructure. The PENA Program effectively facilitates access to digital tools and skills development, though adaptation varies depending on digital literacy and social support.Digitalization strengthens womens empowerment by enabling participants to expand markets, manage online sales efficiently, and build entrepreneurial confidence. However, dual gender roles and uneven access to technology remain barriers. The study concludes that improving digital literacy and providing adaptive mentoring are crucial to advancing women-led MSME digital transformation, offering insights for inclusive and sustainable empowerment policies.

Abstract

This study emphasizes how important literacy communities are to promoting a literacy culture in Kota Semarang, especially Bookclub Semarang.  In light of Indonesia's inadequate national literacy performance, as evidenced by the 2022 PISA ratings, Bookclub Semarang has emerged as a novel platform for the community to improve literacy and knowledge. Interviews with members and management demonstrate that the programs provided by Bookclub Semarang efficiently meet the educational demands of the city's population.  Regular efforts like Baca Buku Bareng (Reading Together) facilitate reading and book discussions while fostering good social relationships and a sense of belonging among participants. Innovative strategies are essential to maintain member involvement, organizational leadership, and community continuity. This study suggests program innovation strategies for community management and activities using SWOT analysis and innovation ambition matrix mapping. These tactics seek to enhance involvement among members and staff, guarantee the community's sustainability, and promote inclusion in nurturing reading interest throughout all demographics of Semarang's population.  In the long run, these initiatives are anticipated to enhance the community's overall influence on literacy advancement.

Abstract

The food industry has various potential risks that can affect workplace safety, production smoothness, and product quality. Loso Tofu Factory in Semarang City is a medium-scale industry facing such risks. This study aims to analyze risks in the tofu production process using the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) method and Risk Priority Number (RPN). Among 13 identified risks, five main risks were prioritized for mitigation: slippery production area (R10), soybean spillage due to employee slips caused by slippery areas (R9), tofu crumbling during cutting (R11), mixing of waste with soybeans (R2), and incorrect tofu cutting (R12). Mitigation measures include improving Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), conducting work training, using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and maintaining production equipment. The results demonstrate that implementing mitigation strategies can enhance workplace safety, production efficiency, product quality, and ensure industrial sustainability. This research underscores the importance of proactive risk management in maintaining operational continuity and product standards in the food industry. By addressing these prioritized risks, Loso Tofu Factory can minimize disruptions, reduce hazards, and strengthen its position as a sustainable medium-scale enterprise. The integration of FMEA and RPN provides a systematic approach to identifying and managing critical risks, offering a model for similar industries to improve safety and production outcomes.

Abstract

Sentyaki Park in North Semarang, designated as a Free Activity Zone, currently faces significant development challenges, including limited accessibility for vulnerable groups, insufficient infrastructure, and poor environmental management that results in frequent inundation. This study aims to strategically revitalize the park into a truly inclusive, sustainable, and multi-functional public amenity by applying the principles of Placemaking. The research methodology combines SWOT Analysis with comprehensive activity and site analysis, synthesized within the LIFE Concept (Local Economic Activation, Inclusive Social Interaction, Free Public Access, Eco-Friendly) framework. The findings suggest that transforming Sentyaki Park requires enhancing its spatial identity through an integrated design that maximizes social interaction and economic potential. The resulting revitalization plan proposes clear spatial programming for community activities and supports local economic growth, while also integrating nature-based solutions to enhance environmental resilience. The culmination of this research is the implementation of a 3D design visualization, which provides a concrete and integrated model for the park's future development. This research demonstrates that the application of Placemaking, guided by the multi dimensional LIFE Concept, offers a robust approach to creating a just, functional, and socio-economically vital public space.

Abstract

The redevelopment of Tambakrejo Fishermen Settlement in Semarang City was part of the East Flood Canal normalization program, which required the relocation of 97 fishermen households from riverbank areas to a new settlement developed on the former Kali Banger riverbed. This study aims to analyze the integration of geotechnical engineering, adaptive waterfront settlement, and collaborative governance in the development of a sustainable coastal relocation area. A mixed-method case study approach was employed through the analysis of technical documents, engineering reports, planning records, and policy-related documents. The results indicate that the relocation site was characterized by soft soil and active mud deposits with an estimated natural consolidation period of 67.225 years and a settlement rate of 5.74 cm/year, exceeding the allowable limit for residential infrastructure. A hybrid reinforcement system consisting of Polyfelt PEC-50 geotextile and bamboo piles successfully reduced incremental settlement to 0.4–0.5 cm/year and increased the safety factor to 1.47–1.48, exceeding the minimum design requirement of 1.4. The redevelopment concept integrated fishermen housing, green open spaces, drainage systems, boat docking facilities, and public infrastructure to support environmental quality and livelihood sustainability. This study proposes an integrated model of sustainable coastal relocation that combines adaptive geotechnical engineering, waterfront settlement planning, collaborative governance, and livelihood sustainability. The findings demonstrate that successful coastal relocation requires not only technical feasibility but also social acceptance and institutional collaboration to achieve safe, adaptive, and sustainable coastal settlements.
