            Jurnal Komunikasi Global (JKG) is a peer-reviewed journal organized and published by the Department of Communication Studies, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Syiah Kuala University. JKG publishes research and review articles promoting various approaches in the field of communication studies limited to mass communication, marketing communication, and intercultural communication (starting from Volume 9(2) 2020). JKG publishes twice a year in June and December. Each volume contains eight research and review articles. JKG is a follow-up journal of Komunikasi Global which was firstly published in 2012. Since 2017, the journal has been published online with the first edition Volume 6(1) 2017. Starting from Volume 7(1) 2018, JKG adopted the IMRAD model for Heading Style and Writing Publication following the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Higher Education regulations. JKG was accredited by Kemenristekdikti RI (SINTA 4) from Volume 7(1) 2018. Since Volume 10 (1) 2021, JKG is accredited with SINTA 3 (SK No.158/E/KPT/2021). Since Volume 9(1) 2020, a new journal template adding article history, citation and some adjustment of font size, header, table format, article history and citation has been initiated to maintain the quality of the publication.

The number of smokers among women in Indonesia is increasing every year, even though smokers are predominantly male. In order to educate the public about the negative impacts of tobacco consumption, the government has produced anti-smoking Public Service Advertisements (PSAs) aired on television. The information gap about smoking hazards is due to lack of anti-smoking messages which is unable to compete with the extensive and creative pro-smoking messages in many media platforms. The way people use media for information-seeking, such as messages about smoking, dictates how they look for the messages and helps to understand how they encounter messages the most. By interviewing 39 women in Banda Aceh and Jakarta, this study presents women’s opinion about television and the media preference for searching and gaining information about smoking. The findings show that participants of the study prefer to obtain information about smoking through the media—online social media than through television, such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Line, WhatsApp, and non-media like friends and their doctor’s advice. Given the substantial cost of television health campaigns, the study findings can provide input on alternative media in communicating about the harms of smoking.

Ridwan Kamil as a mayor of Bandung is known as a successful leader to build his region. Most of his government programs were published through his Instagram account @ridwankamil. Besides, his Instagram images mostly contain Islamic symbols. This study aims to analyze the practice of rhetoric through the symbols of Islam on Instagram account @ridwankamil. This research used a qualitative content analysis based on rhetorical discourse theory from Aristotle. This theory is used to analyze three photos containing Islamic symbols on Instagram account of Ridwan Kamil. The results of this study indicated that each photo containing Islamic symbols showed him as an Islamic figure. Following various issues regarding malpractices and frauds done by irresponsible Umrah and Hajj Organiser Companies (PPIU) in Indonesia, the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag), is assigned with a more significant challenge to overcome the problem that causes billion rupiah loss on the side of the customer (jamaah). One of the efforts tried to be implemented is by creating Integrated Computerised Management for Umrah and Special Hajj, also known as SISKOPATUH as the channel to register, monitor and control the flow of Umrah and Hajj application and process for both jamaah and PPIU. This research drew attention on how Kemenag has tried to socialise and implement SISKOPATUH that they have planned to be the protector of jamaah.  In-depth interviews were done with stakeholders of Umrah and Hajj organisers; two from government and three from private sectors. The findings reveal that a number of strategies were used by Kemenag to communicate their programme to protect the people from Umrah and Hajj malpractices. Setelah beberapa isu dan kasus penipuan jamaah oleh Perusahaan Penyelenggara Ibadah Umrah (PPIU) dalam beberapa tahun belakangan, pemerintah Indonesia, Kementerian Agama Republik Indonesia (Kemenag) mendapat tantangan besar untuk menangani kasus yang merugikan jamaah hinga miliaran rupiah. Salah satu upaya yang dilakukan adalah dengan menciptakan sebuah sistem aplikasi SISKOPATUH sebagai kanal untuk mendaftarkan, mengawasi dan mengontrol alur proses pemberangkatan jamaah Umrah dan Haji, yang digunakan oleh jamaah dan PPIU. Penelitian ini berfokus pada upaya Kemenag dalam menyosialisasikan dan menjalankan kebijakan SISKOPATUH kepada publik dan PPIU. Wawancara mendalam dilakukan kepada dua orang pihak Kemenag dan 3 orang pihak swasta. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa Kemenag menjalankan sejumlah strategi untuk menyampaikan program pemerintah dalam rangka melindungi jamaah dari penipuan dan penyalahgunaan penyelenggaraan ibadah Haji dan Umrah.

Pemberlakuan Pembatasan Kegiatan Masyarakat (PPKM) saat pandemi dilakukan untuk mengendalikan penyebaran COVID-19. Efektivitas aturan pemerintah ini perlu diimbangi dengan pemberitaan pers yang masif untuk memberikan edukasi dan mitigasi kepada masyarakat terkait pembatasan aturan tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana peran pers dalam mendistribusikan informasi kebijakan PPKM di Twitter. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Social Network Analysis (SNA) dengan plug in Twitter Streaming Developer untuk melakukan penambangan teks terkait dengan aturan PPKM. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa peran pers dalam jaringan sosial PPKM di Twitter adalah sebagai penyebar informasi. Hal ini ditunjukkan dari hasil nilai sentralitas yang didapatkan yaitu degree centrality, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality dan eigenvector centrality. Aktor pers yang memiliki nilai popularitas paling tinggi pada jaringan sosial PPKM ini adalah @detikom diikuti oleh @cnnindonesia, @asumsico, @nuicemedia, dan @kumparan. Pola relasi yang terbentuk adalah pola komunikasi roda asimetris yang sangat efektif untuk penyebaran informasi. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa pers dalam penyebaran informasinya disarankan untuk lebih peduli dalam mencari sudut pandang dan judul yang akan diberikan di media sosial karena jumlah followers tidak mempengaruhi penyebaran informasi di Twitter. The implementation of Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) during a pandemic was implemented to control the spread of COVID-19. The effectiveness of this government regulation needs to be balanced with massive press coverage to provide education and mitigation to the public regarding the restrictions on the rule. This study aims to find out how the role of the press in distributing policy information on PPKM on Twitter. The research method used in this research was Social Network Analysis (SNA) with the Twitter Streaming Developer plug-in to perform text mining related to PPKM rules. The results showed that the role of the press in the PPKM social network on Twitter was as a disseminator of information. This was shown from the centrality values obtained, namely degree centrality, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality, and eigenvector centrality. The press actor with the highest popularity value on the PPKM social network was @ detikom followed by @cnnindonesia, @asumsico, @nuicemedia, and @kumparan. The relationship pattern was an asymmetric wheel that was very effective for information dissemination. This study found that the press, in disseminating information, is advised to be more concerned about finding the point of view and titles given on social media because the number of followers does not affect the dissemination of information on Twitter.

Media sosial, seperti Instagram, Facebook dan WhatsApp memudahkan proses interaksi dan komunikasi. Calabai sebagai komunitas di Sulawesi Selatan juga memanfaatkan media sosial tersebut untuk berkomunikasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan menggambarkan pemanfaatan media sosial di kalangan calabai di Sulawesi Selatan. Metode penelitian adalah pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif melalui wawancara mendalam dengan tiga orang calabai. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan media sosial dominan di kalangan calabai adalah Instagram, Facebook dan WhatsApp. Pemanfaatan media sosial calabai untuk bisnis dan mempromosikan pekerjaan sebagai indo’botting. Calabai juga menggunakan media sosial sebagai sarana mengaktualisasikan diri, kebebasan berekspresi, menambah pertemanan baik komunitas calabai maupun masyarakat. Media sosial meningkatkan potensi keterbukaan diri calabai dalam mengaktualisasikan diri dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat. Social media, such as Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, facilitate the process of interaction and communication. Calabai, as a community in South Sulawesi, also uses social media to communicate. This study aims to describe the use of social media among calabai in South Sulawesi. The research is a qualitative descriptive study using in-depth interviews with three calabai. The results showed that the dominant use of social media among calabai were Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. The utilization of social media by calaibai is for business and promoting work as indo'botting. Calabai also deploys social media as a means of self- actualization, freedom of expression, adding friendships to both the calabai community and the wider community. The awareness of job providers to employ people with disabilities is directly proportional to the participation of persons with disabilities in the formal work sector which is relatively low. Another problem faced by persons with disabilities is a negative stigma attached to them. This research was conducted to find out persuasive communication conducted on the Advocacy of LSM Saujana’s Public Relations, related to elements of communicators, messages, and audiences involved in persuasive communication. The research method used in this research is a case study with qualitative analysis techniques. Data collection techniques used in this study are interviews, observation, and documentation. Researchers conducted data analysis based on Flow Analysis Models. Based on the results, there were stages of persuasive communication undertaken including the preparation of communicators, delivery of messages, the use of online and offline media in delivering messages, the behavioral changes and evaluation. The LSM Saujana used the central route in persuasive communication that was appropriate to support advocacy. The dynamics of social media has given impact to society members, including mothers. The daily life of a celebrity who have become mothers can be seen through the Instagram timeline every day. In order to understand the purpose of the Instagram postings from celebrity mothers, the researcher is using the multimodality analysis/ social semiotics method from Kress and Van Leeuwen. After that, the researcher uses the representation analysis by Stuart Hall to comprehend how the picture of an ideal mother is represented on social media. Perkembangan teknologi digital yang sangat pesat mempermudah ibu-ibu generasi milenial untuk mendapatkan informasi seputar kesehatan anak dan keluarga secara online. Tren pencarian informasi ini hendaknya disertai dengan kemampuan literasi digital yang baik untuk menjamin ketepatan dalam memilah informasi yang beredar. Penelitian ini mencoba untuk mendeskripsikan tingkat literasi digital ibu milenial dalam mengakses informasi terkait kesehatan anak dan keluarga. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah digital etnografi dengan paradigma post-positivisme. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara semi terstruktur terhadap tujuh ibu milenial yang berdomisili di beberapa kota besar di Indonesia, seperti Jakarta, Surabaya, dan Banjarmasin. Hasil dari penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa secara keseluruhan, kecakapan literasi digital mayoritas ibu milenial berada di tingkat sedang. Tingkat ini dipengaruhi oleh minat terhadap isu kesehatan tertentu serta pengalaman dari masing-masing ibu. Tingkat kecakapan literasi digital seorang ibu dapat mempengaruhi perilaku mereka sehari-hari. Lebih lanjut, temuan elemen penyebaran informasi dalam praktik literasi digital para ibu menambah kekayaan konsep dari literasi itu sendiri. The rapid development of digital technology made it easier for milenial generation mothers to get information online about child and family’s health. This information-seeking trend should be accompanied by excellent digital literacy skills to ensure accuracy in sorting out information. This study tried to describe the digital literacy competency of milenial mothers in accessing information related to child and family’s health. The research method used is digital ethnography with a post-positivist paradigm. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with seven milenial mothers living in several major cities in Indonesia, including Jakarta, Surabaya, and Banjarmasin. The results of this study showed that the digital literacy skills of milenial mothers were at a moderate level. This level was influenced by their interest in specific health issues and their experiences.  Their level of digital literacy skills could possibly affect their daily behavior. Meme, as part of visual communication, is happening during Jakarta's governor elections in 2017. The existence of the meme is not detached from the creativity of meme creators on social media. The research aims to reveal the characteristics of meme creators based on the type of meme and uncover the construction of meanings from the meme creator's viewpoints on Jakarta's governor election. This research used a qualitative method with a virtual ethnographic approach. Virtual ethnography is used to view visual phenomena or user culture in cyberspace. Data were collected in the form of meme posts, and user comments on the posts in Instagram accounts, interviews, and literature studies. The meme was analyzed using Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis focused on the social cognition section to observe the meaning of construction performed by the meme creator. The results showed that there are three characteristics of meme creators. Firstly, the meme creators who promote the candidate and counter the negative issue of the opposing party about the supported candidate. Secondly, they who provide the awareness of the community to be more critical and not easily deceived by negative symbols and issues. This research aims to learn the extent to which the Aceh Besar's paralinguistic features affect the interpretation of the message by the students at Syiah Kuala University. The study employed the quantitative method by distributing questionnaires to 100 respondents in 10 faculties of Unsyiah selected using the stratified random sampling technique. The results show that the t value of the paralinguistic variable was 3,820 while t table was 1.984 at α = 5%.  The result indicates that t value (3,820) is greater than t table (1,984), thus Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that the Aceh Besar’s paralinguistic features positively and significantly affect the interpretation of spoken messages.
