Abstract

Metal organic framework (MOF) is one of extraordinary materials in many technical field applications. One of them is as CO2 gas adsorbent. We studied, synthesized, and characterized Copper-based material, known as Metal organic frameworks (MOFs), using a solvothermal-based modification method. Copper salt (Cu (NO3)2. 3H2O) and benzene dicarboxylic acid (H2BDC) were mixed and then heated in an oven at 120°C, to produce low impurities, small pore and uniform particle size of materials called CuBDC. Infrared spectroscopy and XRD data confirmed the formation of CuBDC. Furthermore, the result showed that CuBDC frameworks have good thermal stability up to 330°C.  Thereafter SEM picture showed random, layered, and asymmetrical corners structure which is typical of triclinic crystal system. Lastly, specific surface areas and the porosity were analyzed using The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. Abstract

Abstract. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is micronutrient that is water soluble and indispensable for the body's metabolism, also plays a role in immune function. Vitamin C are easy to be absorbed actively. One of the fruits that contain vitamin C is melon fruit. Many varieties of melon fruit affect the vitamin C levels. The levels of vitamin C can be determined by 2,6-dichloroindophenol titration method using 2,6-dichloroindophenol solution. The advantages of the 2,6-dichloroindophenol titration method in the determination of vitamin C levels is reductor substances other than vitamin C are not oxidized by 2,6-dichloroindophenol. The examination begins with the determination of equivalence of 2,6-dichloroindophenol solution to vitamin C and followed by determination of vitamin C levels in several varieties of melon fruit. Equivalence of 2,6-dichloroindophenol solution to vitamin C was obtained 0,1347 mg vitamin C per 1 mL 2,6-dichloroindophenol solution. Levels of vitamin C in various varieties of melon fruit obtained that the highest levels was in Golden Melon variety (9,209 mg vitamin C per 100 g of Golden Melon) while the lowest levels was in Langkawi Melon variety (0,335 mg of vitamin C per 100 g of Langkawi Melon). Abstract

This research showed the application of Proportional, Integral, and Derivative (PID) control system on heat equations that has non-integer ordered solutions on Laplace domain. Zala tuning method and Ziegler-Nichols method; which is ultimate cycle and process reaction method, are used to determine the value of Kp, Ti and Td as constants in PID to maintain the temperature of 1oC on the position of x = 3 m from the heat source with k = 0,042 m2s-1 diffusivity. Based on the results, there were ten systems that were closest in the desired criteria. With regards to overshoot and the time taken to reach the stable position, therefore the ten systems that are produced have not many differences in strengths and weaknesses.

Abstract

The use of antibiotics is an alternative to reduce disease incidence and is used to increase egg-laying hens. This study aims to detect the presence of antibiotic resistance to resistance coding genes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. The cloacal swab samples were collected randomly as many 66 samples from several egg-laying hens farms in Cianjur Regency, West Java. The collected isolates were examined bacteriologically. The results of the antibiotic sensitivity test of 8 samples (12.1%) of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed the resistance level of antibiotics class tetracycline (tetracycline50%, oxytetracycline75%, and doxycycline50%), fluoroquinolone (enrofloxacin 12.5%), and phenicol (chloramphenicol 12.5%). Pseudomonas aeruginosa was resistant to tetracyclines, oxytetracyclines, doxycycline, enrofloxacin and is sensitive to chloramphenicol. The detection of resistance coding genes showed the genes amount of tetA (62.5%) and qnrS (75%). Efforts to determine the level of resistance and use of antibiotics in farms need regular surveillance and monitoring to ensure the wise use of antibiotics.

Abstract

Abstract. Saga (Abrus precatorius L.) have been used by Indonesian community as a traditional medicine. The research aims to determine the activity of the methanol extract of saga leaves to inhibit the growth of clinical Streptococcus pneumoniae growth. Inhibition tests was done with casting cup method. The results showed that the methanol extract of saga leaves at a concentration of 37,5; 50; 62,5; 75 and 87,5 mg/mL formed growth inhibition zone of clinical S. pneumoniae with consecutive average of 0,5; 1,75; 2,82; 4,00; and 4,82 mm. Abstract

One of the future technologies for a safe hydrogen storage media is  metal hydrides. Currently, Mg-based metal hydride has a safety factor and efficient for vehicle applications. However, the thermodynamic properties of magnesium hydride (MgH2) found a relatively high temperature. High desorption temperatures caused MgH2 high thermodynamic stability resulting desorption enthalpy is also high. In this study, natural mineral (iron ore) has been extracted from iron sand into powder of magnetite (Fe3O4) and used as a catalyst in an effort to improve the desorption properties of MgH2. Magnetie has been successfully extracted from iron sand using precipitation method with a purity of 85 % , where the purity of the iron sand before extracted was 81%. Then, MgH2-Fe3O4 was milling using mechanical alloying method with a variety of catalysts and milling time. The observation by XRD showed the material was reduced to nanocrystalline scale. MgH2 phase appears as the main phase. DSC test results showed with the addition of Fe3O4, the desorption temperature can be reduced up to 366oC, compared to pure pure MgH2 reached by 409o C. Furthermore, based on gravimetric test, the hydrogen release occurs at a temperature of 388o C, weight loss  of 0.66 mg during 16 minutes.

Abstract

Surveys on traditional medical plants affected by termites have been conducted since June to August 2010 at Ketambe, northern Aceh. Traditional medical plants and their natural habitats were obtained through interviewing local people. Termites were collected by adopted a Standardized Sampling Protocol and final. taxonomic confirmation was done with the help of Termite Research Group (the Natural History Museum, London). About 20 species of medical plants were attacked by termites with various levels. Nine genera and 20 species were collected from various habitats throughout Ketambe, Simpur as well as Gunung Setan villages. Coffe (Coffea arabica), hazelnut (Aleurites moluccana) , and areca (Area catechu) were among the worse of traditional medical  plant that had been attached by the termites.

Abstract

Anredera cordifolia (Binahong) is one of the medicinal plants that has been widely used for its properties of inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, decreasing blood uric acid, and healing wounds. This study was conducted to evaluate the acute toxicity effects of ethanolic extract of binahong to support its use as a medicinal plant. Ethanolic extracts of binahong leaves were prepared. Twenty-five white male rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into 5 groups and administered with a single dose of Na-CMC suspension or a dose of 300, 600, 1200, or 2400 mg/kg BW of binahong ethanolic leaf extract, respectively. Toxicity symptoms were monitored at three-time intervals: ½-1, 1½-2, and 3-6 hours after the administration. A macroscopic evaluation of the rat’s liver was carried out to identify any lesion. The rat’s liver and whole-body weights were determined to assess the weight reduction. The results showed that there was no dead rat in any of the groups, indicating that no LD50 was identified. Also, there were several toxic effects observed including a decrease in movements, somatic response, insensitivity, and stool consistency. There was no evidence of a lesion on liver macroscopy. However, the weights of rats’ livers increased in tandem with the reduction in their body weights. The findings from this study reveal that single dose of binahong ethanolic extract ranging from 300 to 2400 mg/kg BW are safe, while minimal toxic effects were observed.

Abstract

The presence of Eleusine indica from oil palm plantations in Serdang Bedagai Regency has never been overall reported glyphosate-resistant. This study aims to distribution mapping and resistance classification of E. indica population to glyphosate herbicide of oil palm plantations in Serdang Bedagai Regency. This research was conducted on Weed Research Center Land in Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara in October 2016 to August 2017. This research used glyphosate herbicide with the recommended dose at 720 g ai ha-1 and three replications. Population ESU0 (from Politeknik Negeri Medan Ball Field) as a comparison. Data analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics 20 software. The results showed there E. indica population classified as glyphosate-resistant amount 89.36% (42 population), classified as glyphosate-resistant moderate amount 10,64% (5 population) and there is no population glyphosate-susceptible on oil palm plantations in Serdang Bedagai Regency of recommended dose at 720 g ai ha-1.

Abstract

Small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) is the smallest among the sub-family Lutrinae, today occurs population decrease of small-clawed otter caused by human activity, depletion of prey species, and exploitation. This research is done to learn physically and biologically of the habitat characteristic of small-clawed otter. Retrieval of data was held on 1-14 in April 2014. The parameters which used are the amount of tracks found in habitat that is used by the small-clawed otter in Ujong Nga village. The data is collected on small-clawed otter habitat in Ujong Nga and sample used are plot with measure of 30x30m and then  divided into 8 plots. The result showed that the small-clawed otter selecting habitat unit with criteria (a) the type of habitat are field, swamp, thatch forest, and riverside; (b) the availabilty of many feed (1,33 tracks per plot), rare (0,33 tracks per plot), less (0,17 tracks per plot); (c) the tracks distance to the nest 0-25 m (1,66 tracks per plot), 25-50 m (1 tracks per plot), 50 m (0,5 tracks per plot); (d) the tracks distance to water source 0-25 m (2,16 tracks per plot), 25-50 m (0,5 tracks per plot), and for distance to 50 m track is not found; and(e) the tracks distance to toilet site0-25 m (1,16 tracks per plot), 25-50 m (0,5 tracks per plot), and 50 m (0,17 tracks per plot). The conclusion of this research habitat characteristic ofAonyx cinereusare fieldwithavailability of many feed, close to water source, clost to nest, and close to toilet site.
