Abstract

This study is intended to find out the influence of the teacher’s competence towards the motivation of students in learning English. A questionnaire was given to 24 students at a sports school in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The five (5) closed and open questions were adapted from Zhao (2012). The results from this study show that the competences of the teacher including cognitive, affective, and psychomotor competence (Syah, 2013) enhance the motivation of students to learn English. The teacher’s personality also has a strong influence on the students’ perceptions of their teacher. The teacher’s cognitive abilities which include the teacher’s competence at teaching English motivate the students to like English as a subject. Next, the teacher’s affection for the students also influences the students’ motivations who do not only like the subject but to like the teacher. Lastly, the teacher’s way of presenting lessons (psychomotor) affect the motivation of the students to learn English. Thus, it can be concluded that the teacher, as one of the external factors, should be able to maximize his/her competence in teaching to motivate the students more when learning English.

Abstract

Amid the proliferation of online news portals, there is a felt need for a reinvestigation of the millennial students’ metalinguistic knowledge (MK) on the technicality of the headlines. Couched within Relevance Theory, including the interlarding theories of Communicative Competence and Monitor Hypothesis, this study investigated 80 students’ technical knowledge on selected 35 headlines vis-à-vis the students’ academic disciplines and exposure to the headlines/news articles. The study employed a Grammaticality Judgment Test (GJT) by Schütze (1996) following Noam Chomsky’s competence/performance distinction. The results showed the dearth of the students’ knowledge on the technical rules of the headlines, which only fared around 70.66% accuracy. Likewise, the results showed that those who were never exposed to the headlines had a significantly lower mean score as compared to those with exposure to the headlines. Poor cognizance of the semantics-syntax of the headlines statistically cuts across eight academic disciplines and exposure to news articles. Overall, the students’ understanding of the headlines seems to be shaped by their explicit knowledge and grammaticality judgment about the technicalities of the headlines. By and large, such results may be an indication of the students’ experiences of semantic ambiguities of the headlines. We put forth the dire need for the re-introduction of ‘Journalism’ course across educational levels in a language classroom given today’s rapid pervasiveness and breadth of digitalism. Students’ lack of MK on the technicality of the headlines can impinge on their understanding of the semantics and the actual story-level depictions of the news.

Abstract

In Thailand, concerns over the imperative need to improve its citizens’ English proficiency and the unsatisfactory English learning outcomes have long been present. In addition, ongoing globalization has raised another concern that Thainess is being eroded due to external influences. This study attempted to compromise these two seemingly conflicting forces by enhancing Thai students’ global English and maintaining local Thainess associated with three regions of Thailand. First, a set of instructional innovations for elementary English education was constructed in each region. These were based on prominent characteristics of local Thainess elicited through a questionnaire completed by local community members and subsequently implemented in Grade 4 classes at three schools in each region of Thailand for ten weeks. Next, two separate sets of pretests-posttests corresponding to each instructional set were constructed and administered to assess their local Thainess and English knowledge. Finally, to ensure that the knowledge gained from the instruction was put into practical use, a tour guide simulation task was conducted by the students. The analysis of the test scores demonstrates that localized lessons were beneficial, enhancing their local Thainess knowledge and associated English vocabulary. The accomplishment of the task thus represented their knowledge of local Thainess and English, contributing to a sense of pride in their nation and a sense of achievement in their English proficiency and instruction.

Abstract

There are two main purposes navigated in this study; first of all, it was carried out to investigate the teacher-student relationship; secondly, it was also conducted to find out whether there was a correlation between teacher-student relationship and English teaching-learning process. A number of 14 teachers and 43 students participated in this study; they are from two publish junior high schools in Aceh, Indonesia. Questionnaires for the students and interviews with the teachers were used to discover the influence of the relationship between English teachers and students, and the problems that students faced during their interactions with the teachers. There were twenty-two items in the questionnaire and five questions in the interviews that the participants needed to answer. The collected data from the questionnaire were then analysed by using a Likert scale and the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, meanwhile, the data from the interviews were analysed by following the stages of Miles and Huberman‘s(1994) model. In the first junior high school, a significant correlation appeared between the teacher-student relationship and teaching-learning process, with the raw score of 0.745 that refers to a high correlation. The tcount was higher than the ttable (4.784≥2.100). However, at second junior high school, had no significant correlation detected between the two variables with the raw score of 0,401 that referred to moderate correlation, where tcount was lower than ttable (2.004≤2.097). This research is expected to have a beneficial impact on the English teaching-learning process especially in the areas of the two schools, where this study took place, as well as the teachers and educators from other institutions spread in Aceh and Indonesia in general.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing the speeches of Donald Trump and of Hillary Clinton in the USA Presidential candidates’ debates as instruments of power. The data is a presidential final debate video of Trump and Clinton made in September 2016 which has been converted into a transcript. The data analyzing technique is divided into three steps: 1) describing the context, 2) analyzing the illocutionary acts, and 3) analyzing the power dimensions. The results of this research show that the speakers use the speech act as an instrument of power with classifications of representative, commissive and expressive. In this regard, the researchers found that the speakers demonstrated their power to try to convince the voters in their society to trust them to be the president. The research results also showed that the usage of speech in debate as an instrument of power can influence the voters especially on Election Day.

Abstract

This study was done to study the learning strategies used by both low and high performance speaking students in developing their speaking skills as well as the differences between the learning strategies used by both groups of learners. The reason for conducting this research was the fact that the competency of many students in speaking English was still considered unsatisfactory in Banda Aceh. We postulated that one aspect involved in the process of developing speaking skills was the learning strategies used by the learners. In this study, the data was collected through field research by means of documents, questionnaires, and interviews. The result of this study indicated that high performance speaking students had better balance in using all kinds of learning strategies (memory, cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, affective, and social) for enhancing their speaking skills; the same could not be found with low performance speaking students. Besides, the high performance students employed more learning strategies consciously and appropriately compared to the low performance students. Based on the research results, it is suggested that students should be trained to be more aware of their own speaking learning strategies. They should use appropriate language learning strategies more consciously, purposefully, and frequently to be more successful in developing their speaking skills.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the writing strategies applied by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in Indonesia. It also investigated how the writing process undergone by Indonesian EFL students differs from students using English as their first language (L1). The writing strategies questionnaire from Petri and Czrl (2003) was used to find out the strategies used by the EFL students. In addition, the adult writing process model of Hayes (2012), which was constructed based on the writing process of English as first language students, was used as the framework to investigate the writing process applied by Indonesian students. The participants were 135 English Education department students from two Indonesian universities. Participants answers to the questions in the questionnaire over the three stages of writing (pre-writing, drafting, and revising) were analysed using a 5-point Likert scale. The result revealed that the participants applied writing strategies at a moderate level. They only frequently used 15 of the 38 strategies provided in the questionnaire at high frequency. The 15 strategies used at high frequencies described the participants writing process which indicated some differences from that of the writing process undergone by the English L1 students. The findings aim to inform theories of second/foreign language writing performance, as well as support the design of teaching writing courses in English Education majors in Indonesia. The data may also be useful for educators in other countries teaching English as a second or foreign language.

Abstract

This research dealt with collocations used in the North Aceh dialect. It analyzed the part of speech categories into which collocations of the North Aceh dialect can be grouped. This research focused on the grammatical collocations and lexical collocations used in the Blang Mee village of Bireuen District, Aceh, Indonesia. This is a descriptive qualitative using case study looking into the villagers’ use of Acehnese collocations. Six Acehnese speakers were selected as the language informants. They were fifty years old or above and never traveled or lived outside of Blang Mee. Data were extracted from interviews with these speakers who were asked to discuss general topics in Acehnese. The analysis was performed using a framework on collocation categories by Benson et al. The results of the analysis showed both lexical and grammatical collocations used by speakers in North Aceh. Lexical collocations were found in the forms of verb (denoting creation or activation) + noun combinations, verb (meaning eradication or nullification) + a noun, adjective + noun combinations, noun + verb combinations, noun + noun combinations, adverb + adjective combinations, and verb + adverb combinations. Grammatical collocations came in the following combinations: noun + preposition combinations, adjective + preposition combinations, preposition + noun combinations, and collocational verb patterns. The collocations used by the North Aceh dialect speakers indicate the uniqueness of their dialect within other dialects spoken by the Acehnese.

Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out (1) whether Lexical Diversity (LD) and Lexical Sophistication (LS) can provide useful insights into the development of academic writing by tracing the interaction between the intra-individual variability in relation to a Dynamic Systems perspective, and (2) whether the supportive interaction between LD and LS can be recognized from the writing development. Twelve academic writing samples written over a 5-year period (2010-2015) by an Indonesian learner of English were employed as longitudinal data. Several tools designed by van Geert and van Dijk (2002), Peltier (2009), and Steinkrauss (2016) were used to analyze the dynamic patterns of language development. The results showed that the development of intra-individual variability in academic writing is in line with the Dynamic Systems Theory as it indicates that the developmental process between the two growers is complex, non-linear, self-organized, unpredictable, revealing attractor states, and constantly changing. The supportive growth movement emerges as the result of the interaction between variables. Finally, it can be concluded that variability is a source of development. Learners might need to be aware of their unique learning trajectory in order to maintain a more stable linguistic development.

Abstract

This article investigates students’ reading materials, reasons for reading journal articles, and strategies in handling its difficulties. The data was collected by the use of qualitative method with structured interview. A number of eight students were purposely selected as the participants of this study, each representing eight different units studying in the seventh semester at a university in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. In analyzing the data, this research employed the qualitative descriptive analysis of data organization, data examination and data explanation. The findings showed that the favorite reading materials for students are website articles and social media captions, followed by non-fiction readings and newspapers. It is also found that preparing assignment is the utmost popular reason for reading journal articles for the students. Students also said that looking up in dictionary, internet surfing, consulting friends and lecturers, more practices, predicting the meaning of the words, and partial reading were some strategies they used to tackle the problems of reading journal articles. The implication of this study can be of actual practice to the academic reading course and curriculum and material development, especially for future improvement on students’ reading performance and proficiency.
