Abstract

This research examines the meaning of symbolic interactionism in beauty affiliate marketing strategies on the TikTok application. TikTok has evolved into a major platform for marketing, as the digital ecosystem evolves. TikTok affiliates serve as intermediaries between brands and customers by using symbols to build product perceptions. The purpose of this study is to find out how TikTok affiliates in Tangerang Regency use communication symbols such as hashtags, facial expressions, body language, speaking styles through digital trends and following the TikTok algorithm to create an image of beauty products and attract audiences. This research uses a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations and documentation listed to verify the truth of the data obtained. The results of this study show that affiliates not only promote products, but also create meaning through social interaction with the audience. Affiliates can increase audience engagement by sharing personal experiences, using hooks, CTAs, thumbnails, providing honest reviews. Affiliates can also increase their credibility by using TikTok features such as FYP and yellow baskets. Thus, this study provides an understanding of the role of TikTok social media in digital marketing and offers a new perspective for affiliates and brands in developing strategies about marketing beauty products on TikTok.Keywords: Tiktok, Affiliate Program, Strategic Marketing, Personal Branding

Abstract

The cancel culture phenomenon emerged as society's response to legal dysfunction which is no longer able to provide substantive justice. This research aims to understand how cancel culture acts as an alternative social control mechanism amidst weakening legal institutions. By using literature study methods and the Durkheim approach, this research found that cancel culture has two sides: as a form of progressive public participation, as well as the potential for moral destruction due to judgments that are not based on ethics. Digital space has become a forum for people to express dissatisfaction with the legal system, but it also creates new risks in the form of symbolic violence. Therefore, cancel culture is understood as an ambivalent social phenomenon that reflects the need for legal reform and strengthening digital ethical awareness.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of government policies in facilitating the digital transformation of traditional SMEs in Kampung Rendang and Kampung Tenun, Indonesia. It explores how digitalization impacts business sustainability, MSMEs' challenges, and the opportunities enabled through government interventions. Employing a comparative case study approach, this research analyzes SMEs' adoption of e-commerce platforms, digital marketing, and financial technologies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and policy analysis, focusing on government-led digitalization programs and SME adaptation strategies. The study finds that government initiatives—such as branding programs, digital training, and financial assistance—play a critical role in enabling SMEs to adopt digital tools. However, challenges persist, including low digital literacy, inadequate infrastructure, and regulatory inconsistencies. Despite these obstacles, digital platforms like Tokopedia, Shopee, and social media have facilitated access to broader markets and new business opportunities. This research offers a novel perspective by integrating digital transformation frameworks with social capital theory to understand how government policies shape the digital resilience of heritage-based S,MEs. It contributes fresh insights into the intersection of digitalization, cultural heritage, and SME empowerment in rural settings.

Abstract

Fishing communities in Indonesia are often the most vulnerable social group to poverty and marginalization. Although the marine sector has great potential for the economy, small and traditional fishermen are often trapped in a cycle of poverty that is difficult to break. This article examines the poverty trap experienced by fishing communities through the perspective of social conflict theory. Using a qualitative approach that includes data collection through a literature review, this study analyzes how the unequal distribution of resources and power in the fisheries sector leads to exploitation and worsens the socio-economic conditions of fishers. Factors such as dependence on middlemen, market price instability, unfavorable fisheries policies, and marine ecosystem degradation due to overfishing and climate change further strengthen the poverty chain. In addition, internal conflicts within fishing communities also play a role in exacerbating poverty conditions. This article seeks to uncover the dynamics of social and economic conflicts that plague fishing communities, and offers solutions based on community empowerment and fairer policy reforms

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of ecospirituality in the modern era through the approach of ecological sociology and social ecology theory, focusing on a community that applies the principles of sustainability. In this context, ecospirituality is defined as the integration of spiritual values into sustainable environmental practices. Qualitative research methods are used, including in-depth interviews, participant observation, and case studies to explore how community members carry out eco-spirituality practices in their daily lives. The findings show that spiritual relationships with nature encourage collective action in protecting the environment, preserving local culture, and increasing environmental awareness. Although the community faces challenges from the larger economic system, ecospirituality values prove to be a driver of positive social change and environmental sustainability. This study provides insight into the role of ecospirituality in shaping modern society's behaviour towards the environment and its contribution to addressing the current environmental crisis.

Abstract

The Jamu Laut tradition in Jaring Halus Village is generally understood as merely a cultural heritage, thus occurring within social dynamics that are often overlooked. This study aims to analyze the function of the Jamu Laut tradition in forming and maintaining social networks in coastal communities. The research employed a qualitative approach through a systematic literature review of various relevant secondary data sources. The results indicate that Jamu Laut functions as a social mechanism that contributes to maintaining social cohesion, strengthening the value of mutual cooperation (gotong royong), and supporting the community's adaptation to economic and environmental conditions. Within the framework of structural functionalism, this tradition fulfills the functions of integration, adaptation, goal achievement, and pattern maintenance, although in practice it undergoes adjustments along with social changes. These findings confirm that Jamu Laut not only possesses cultural values but also plays a role in supporting the continuity of community social relations, although its contribution is contextual and dependent on local dynamic.

Abstract

Although local wisdom is often romanticized as a pure communal asset, its dual role as both a survival mechanism and an instrument of structural reproduction within the informal economy has rarely been theorized in depth. This study aims to address this research gap by analyzing how local wisdom functions as social capital and a socio-economic adaptation mechanism for informal fishermen in Jaring Halus Village, Langkat. Using a qualitative meta-synthesis approach, this study systematically integrates findings from 25 reputable academic articles to construct a more robust sociological framework. The findings reveal that while local wisdom provides a crucial social safety net—functioning as an informal “community bank” and social insurance, this practice simultaneously reinforces structural inequality through an exploitative patron-client system. Analysis through the lens of Anthony Giddens’s theory of Structuration and Pierre Bourdieu’s Social Capital demonstrates that symbolic capital within local traditions is used to legitimize the dominance of capital owners over fishing laborers. From a development sociology perspective, this study concludes that inclusive coastal development must go beyond normative approaches by critically addressing the power inequalities hidden behind the local wisdom framework in order to achieve multidimensional well-being.

Abstract

context of romantic relationships is currently a hot topic of discussion in publicand academic discourse. This article aims to reconstruct and analyzesociologically the changing patterns of gender interaction by placing them in thecontext of the transformation of social norms, power relations, and theinstitutionalization of risk in the modern era. Using a literature reviewmethodology, this article explores various academic sources, media reports, andrelevant analytical essays to understand how changes in culture, law, digitaltechnology, and political economy influence men's rational decision-making inromantic relationships. The results of the study show that the decline in maleinitiative cannot be viewed solely from an individual perspective, such as a lackof confidence, but rather as an adaptive response to social conditions that areconsidered increasingly risky, unbalanced, and uncertain. Social media, datingapps, and the normalization of moral labeling practices contribute to increasedsocial and symbolic costs in gender interactions. This article argues that thisphenomenon reflects structural changes in gender relations, where the logic ofcaution, instrumental rationality, and risk avoidance have become moredominant. These findings have important implications for sociological studies offamily, gender, and culture, particularly in understanding changes in themeaning of intimacy, romance, and the institution of marriage in modernsociety.

Marharoan Bolon, a tradition ofmutual cooperation unique to the Simalungun community, reflects socioecological practices that embody the values of togetherness, solidarity, and carefor the environment. This study aims to analyze the role of this tradition insupporting sustainable development, particularly through communityparticipation in environmental management. The method used is a descriptivequalitative approach through literature study and conceptual analysis from anecological sociology perspective. The results show that Marharoan Bolonfunctions as a social mechanism that strengthens community cohesion while alsoserving as an adaptive strategy in maintaining the sustainability of naturalresources. This tradition encourages active community involvement in villageinfrastructure development, land maintenance, and collective environmentalpreservation. However, the dynamics of modernization and changes in socialstructure pose significant challenges to the sustainability of these traditionalvalues. Therefore, the preservation of Marharoan Bolon needs to be integratedwith community-based development policies so that it can adapt to thecontemporary socio-ecological context without losing its local cultural meaning.Keyword: Marharoan Bolon, Simalungun community, local wisdom, sustainabledevelopment

Abstract

This study looks at how teenagers create and show their identities on Instagram by using two different accounts, called the first account and the second account. This study uses a quantitative method based on survey data from 28 teenage Instagram users aged 13 to 20, drawing on the idea of the looking-glass self and how people present themselves online. The results show that 82.1% of people have a second account, which they use as a private place to express their true selves. At the same time, their main account is used to show more socially acceptable and positive versions of themselves. This shows the balance people try to keep between how they present themselves online and who they really are in private. The study shows how the features of a platform influence how people build their online identities, emphasizing the importance of choosing what to share and how to target different groups of people. These findings help us better understand how young people develop their identities in the digital world of connected societies.
