Abstract

This paper investigates the influence of political symbols on the dynamics of traditional authority within the Dagbon chieftaincy, focusing on how these symbols interact with cultural representation and existing power structures. By addressing the significance of political symbols in legitimizing authority and shaping governance practices, this research employs qualitative methodologies, including ethnographic interviews, archival records, and participant observations, to uncover a refined understanding of their role in contemporary Dagbon politics. Key findings reveal that symbols such as regalia, rituals, and public displays not only reinforce traditional leadership but also serve as instruments for negotiating power within modern political frameworks. Additionally, these symbols significantly impact the community’s perception of governance and influence healthcare delivery by aligning health initiatives with cultural values, thereby enhancing community participation and compliance. The implications of this study extend to the field of healthcare, emphasizing the necessity of culturally sensitive governance structures that incorporate traditional authority to improve health outcomes. By highlighting the intersection of political symbolism and healthcare practices within traditional settings, this research contributes to the broader discourse on the role of cultural competency in health governance, advocating for interdisciplinary approaches that bridge traditional authority and contemporary health policy frameworks.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the idea of educational transformation according to Hadratussyaikh Hasyim Asy'ari as stated in the book Adabul 'Alim wal Muta'alim, as a legacy of classical Islamic thought that is relevant in the modern context. This research uses a qualitative approach with a library research method through hermeneutic text analysis of the contents of the book, and contextualized with contemporary educational issues. The main findings of this study show that Hasyim Asy'ari not only emphasizes ethical aspects in the relationship between teacher and student, but also contains systemic ideas regarding the integration of religious and moral sciences, character building, and the importance of exemplary in educational transformation. These ideas reflect a holistic education model based on spiritual and moral values, which offers a critique of modern education that tends to be secular and instrumental. Thus, Hasyim Asy'ari's thought is a significant contribution in formulating an educational paradigm that is not only oriented to the transfer of knowledge, but also to the formation of the whole person. This finding enriches the treasures of Islamic thought in the field of education and opens space for the development of character education models in the current global context.

Abstract

This paper explores the nature and dynamics of pre-modern interfaith dialogue between Muslims and Buddhists, focusing on the intellectual and cultural exchanges that occurred prior to the advent of colonialism. This research looks at how early Muslim scholars, travelers, and historians engaged with Buddhist thought not merely through polemical critique, but often with genuine curiosity and attempts at understanding. Through travel accounts, translations, and theological discussions particularly in regions such as India, Central Asia, and parts of the Islamic Caliphate where the two communities coexisted muslim thinkers encountered and reflected on Buddhist teachings, practices, and institutions. These engagements were shaped by the socio-political and religious contexts of their time, yet they reveal moments of intellectual openness and cross-cultural learning. This research paper challenges by examining these early interactions the perception that meaningful Muslim-Buddhist dialogue is a modern phenomenon. It argues that interfaith engagement has deeper historical roots, and that pre-modern encounters offer valuable insights into how religious communities negotiated difference, sought common ground, and contributed to a shared human heritage before the disruptions of colonialism and modernity reframed their relationships.

Abstract

Islamic spiritual values, derived from the Qur'an and Sunnah, are central to the daily lives of Muslims and play a crucial role in shaping their attitudes, behaviours, and social interactions. These values offer a holistic framework for personal growth and communal well-being. Among them, Tawakkul (توكُّل) (trust in Allah), Sabr (صبر) (patience), and Shukr(شكر) (gratitude) are core principles that guide the spiritual and moral conduct of individuals. Tawakkul(توكُّل) emphasises a balance between personal effort and reliance on divine will; Sabr(صبر) encourages perseverance during adversity; and Shukr(شكر) promotes gratitude for divine blessings. This study adopts a qualitative research approach to explore the theoretical foundations and practical implementation of Islamic teachings in diverse educational settings, focusing on how these spiritual values contribute to students’ mental health. The findings highlight that the integration of Tawakkul (توكُّل), Sabr (صبر), and Shukr(شكر) within religious education fosters emotional resilience, spiritual strength, and inner peace. Islamic teachings support the notion that these values can alleviate stress, reduce anxiety, and enhance psychological well-being. In educational environments, Sabr (صبر) serves as a vital coping mechanism, Tawakkul (توكُّل) provides spiritual reassurance, and Shukr(شكر) cultivates positive emotional states. Furthermore, students actively engaged in religious activities report lower stress levels and stronger social support systems. The study concludes that Islamic education, when effectively integrated, not only nurtures spiritual development but also offers valuable contributions to mental health support among students.

Abstract

This research paper advocates for the Islamic perspective of creationism, asserting that all life is intentionally designed by Allah (SWT), in direct contrast to Darwinian evolutionary theory, which erroneously proposes that life arises from random processes and natural selection. The Quranic narrative provides comprehensive insights into the creation of human beings and the universe, with multiple verses explicitly detailing the divine process of creation. While contemporary scientific methodologies offer insights into biological mechanisms, they fundamentally fail to explain the profound metaphysical dimensions of life's origin and the intricate divine design evident in creation. The Quranic perspective emphasizes that Allah is the ultimate Creator (Khaliq), Who designs with precise purpose and wisdom. This study critically examines the philosophical and theological implications of accepting Darwinian interpretations, arguing that such theories fundamentally undermine the belief in purposeful, divine creation. By integrating principles from biology, thermodynamics, and quantum mechanics through an Islamic epistemological lens, this research illustrates how scientific laws and biological mechanisms can be understood as manifestations of divine wisdom rather than products of mere chance. Ultimately, this research emphasizes that belief in purposeful creation provides a comprehensive, spiritually grounded framework for understanding human existence, challenging atheistic scientific narratives that neglect the profound spiritual dimensions of creation.

Abstract

Islamic education integrates Islamic values into learning, focusing on the development of good character. This significantly contributes to the creation of a young generation that excels academically while possessing a strong personality in terms of ethics, spirituality, and social life. Based on literature review, it was found that the application of Qur'anic values and the Prophet's Sunnah in the educational process can serve as a solid foundation in producing individuals who are faithful, devout, and capable of making positive contributions to society. Thus, Islamic education aims not only to create a generation that excels in knowledge but also one that can implement Islamic values in everyday life and benefit their surroundings.

Abstract

The tradition of Sīrah writing dates back to the time of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and remains a subject of interest among Western writers. Western Sīrah writing is influenced by both the realistic as well as polemic approaches. Among the Western Sīrah writers, Lesley Hazleton holds a distinguished place for her contribution, The First Muslim: The Story of Muhammad. With a background in journalism, psychology and a good hold on Middle Eastern studies, Hazleton portrays the life of Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ in a narrative manner. The work is the psychological interpretation of the events of the life of Muḥammad ﷺ as portrayed by the author. Hazleton attempts to narrate a realistic image of the life and environment of Muḥammad ﷺ. The paper employs historical-analytic and textual analysis to critically examine Lesley Hazleton’s work on Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. The paper analyses Hazleton’s work, focusing on her narrative approach, psychological interpretation, and use of literary methods. While Hazleton succeeds in portraying a figure often distorted in the West, her secular framing and psychological interpretations contradict Islamic understandings of prophethood, revelation, and divine mission.

Abstract

The inculcation of Islamic values through the implementation of a religious culture in schools is essential for shaping students’ character. However, a gap still exists between religious learning practices and the internalization of religious values in students’ daily lives. This study aims to describe and analyze how religious culture is applied to instill Islamic values at SMP IT Al-Atiqiyah. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through one-day observations, interviews with teachers and students, and document analysis. The findings reveal that religious culture is implemented through habituation of religious activities, teacher role modeling, and creating a school environment that supports religious practices. Teachers play a key role as exemplars in internalizing Islamic values, while students actively participate in routine religious activities. The study concludes that consistent implementation of religious culture effectively shapes students’ religious character. The implication is that a religious cultural approach can serve as a practical strategy for contextual and sustainable Islamic character education in Islamic-based secondary schools.
