Abstract

There is an association of major depressive disorder with different changes in the immune functioning which associate with activation of inflammatory processes. Trace elements such as copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) have many physiological functions. In the present study, serum levels of Cu, Zn, inflammatory (IL-6), and anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokines have been measured in MDD patients and compared with the apparently healthy group. The correlation between the measured trace elements and IL-6 and IL-10 is another purpose of the study to find out the trace elements effect on the secretion of the interleukins in MDD patients. The study involved 60 pretreatment males with MDD and 30 apparently healthy as controls (age matched). The results indicated that there was significantly increase (p

Abstract

Mechanisms phytoremediation of Lead metal from contaminated soil are a little time consuming because metals cannot degrade, therefore effective cleanup requires  to reduce or remove toxicity, use of plants to remove, detoxify or immobilize environmental contaminants in a growth matrix in soil  through the natural, biological, chemical or physical activities or processes of some location in Baghdad city , the current study was conducted to determine the effects of soil pollution on the elements and the plant absorption of pollutants and their effect on the population in parks, In the city of Baghdad, where ten areas were identified (5 areas by Karkh - 5 areas of the Rusafa side with control), pH and soil tissue were measured and element concentrations (pb) through the average results of plants that have been obtained there is a relationship between plants with a difference from one to other depending on the ability to absorb Lead and content in three dominate plants species, Consecutively: Cynodon dactylon> Eucalyptus camaldulensis> Dodonea viscosa,( 0.033, 0.032. 0.018) Respectively. Lead compounds can be dissolved in water which may result in introduction to soil and thus transfer to food chain. Many industrial activities such as mining, processing minerals and chemical industries, increase non-essential metal concentration in the water tables in the surrounding regions of their manufacturing plants.

Abstract

Today, drinking water supplies for most of the developing countries which mainly includes the remote villages are at stake. Therefore, using of low-cost and available methods, for the treatment of surface water for drinking in the areas without safe water system or emergency conditions was approved by international healthcare organizations. Solar disinfection technology (SODIS), is one of the most important technologies. In this study, the effect of UV-A radiation of sunlight in surface water disinfection in Bandar Abbas was studied. In a cross-sectional study, the samples have been exposed to sunlight for 1 to 7 hours in two types of PET and glass containers. Using of HPC method was measured number of remaining bacteria in the samples. Then, by using a statistical analysis, the relationship between reduce of microbial load and turbidity, contact time, weather conditions and type of containers was investigated. The results showed that removal efficiency of bacteria increased by increasing contact time from 1h to 7h. Also there was a direct and inverse relationship respectively between environmental temperature and turbidity with disinfection efficiency. Also results showed that in glass containers was observed more microbial load reduction. Noticed to significant impact of turbidity on SODIS, it is recommended, a filtration step performed prior to disinfection to reduce water turbidity. Based on the findings, the use of SODIS as a simple and practicable method is recommended to guarantee the drinking water safety. Keywords: Solar disinfection, SODIS, poInt-of-use, Water treatment, Bandar Abbas.

Abstract

The exposures to gasoline and gas oil, for a long time, in the gas stations through inhalation of vapors during refueling are generally hazardous. Gasoline consists of different types of aliphatic hydrocarbons and aryl compounds. Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a receptor involved in the regulation of biological responses to planar aromatic hydrocarbons. The aim of the present study is to compare the serum AHR level in the fuel station workers (FSW) with the non-workers as a control group. The other aim is to find out a possible correlation between AHR with liver and kidney function tests. Sixty male FSW and 30 controls, from ten fuel stations at Al-Najaf City-Iraq, were participated in the present study. The AHR levels were measured using ELISA technique. Other parameters (urea, creatinine, total serum bilirubin (TSB), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and albumin) were measured spectrophotometrically by using ready for use kits. Serum concentration of AHR, ALT, AST and Creatinine in FSW group revealed a significant increase (p<0.001) as compared with the control group. No significant difference was noticed in other parameters. There were significant increase in AST (p=0.002) and ALT (p<0.001) in exposure ≥12yrswith exposure <12yrs in FWS. Smoking has no significant correlation with other parameters. Correlation study indicated a correlation between AHR and Age. No correlation noticed between AHR and any measured parameters in FWS.  It can be concluded that, AHR estimation is important in FSW in order to monitor the health of liver and kidney in those workers. Keywords: Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor, Liver, Kidney, Fuel Filling Workers.

Abstract

This article aims to evaluate the role of alkaloid extract against phospholipase toxicity. The study sample contained 20 adult albino male rats divided into four groups, where each group consists of 5 rats. The groups are categorized as follows:The group of control which received ad libidium. The infected group, which was injected with (0.05ml/per animal) phospholipase.A group injected with (0.05ml/per animal) phospholipase and treated with (0.05ug/per animal) alkaloid extract.A group injected with (0.05ml/per animal) phospholipase and treated with (0.05ug/per animal) alkaloid extract. The results show a highly significant increase (P < 0.05) in the levels of Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) in the infected group compared with the control group. Oxidative stress factor in the infected group demonstrates a significant increase (P < 0.05) in the MDA (malonedialdehyied) levels. Nevertheless, it reported a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in the glutathione (GSH) levels compared with the control group. After using alkaloid extract in the treatment, non-significant changes (P < 0.05) are found in liver functions. Furthermore, MDA and GSH report non-significant changes (P < 0.05) compared with the group of control. The study demonstrates that alkaloid extract has a potential role against phospholipase that is extracted from A. flavus in rats. Keywords: Alkaloid extract; A. flavus; liver function; MDA (malonedialdehyied); glutathione (GSH).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to test the minimally invasive method of surgical intervention with hallux valgus of the first toe in the elderly. The total number of operated and examined feet is 192 (182 in patients with bilateral valgus deviation and 10 with unilateral). The average age is 64.3±2.1 years.  Overload on the first finger and the second and third metatarsal bones is completely absent after the operation, as well as overload on the first metatarsal bone (p≤0.001). The number of cases of overloads between the first finger and the first metatarsal bone in the postoperative period was halved (p≤0.05). In the proposed scheme of surgery, there is a significant improvement in the general condition of patients, in particular, biomechanical indicators of overload between different parts of the foot. After the operation, there was an increase in the longitudinal and a decrease in the transverse projection of the foot. Examination of the walking features of patients with bilateral hallux valgus showed the absence of pain after surgery, as well as a significant increase in the coefficient reflecting the rhythm of walking. This scheme of operation is simple in execution and methodology, and, at the same time, gives a positive result both in the short and long term. In addition, this operation is simple and cheap for patients compared to other methods of operations. The scheme of surgical intervention used on the head of the first metatarsal bone that we used allowed us to significantly improve the anatomical and biomechanical properties of the foot. The valgus deviation disappeared, gait parameters improved, and the load on both feet became more even. The consequence of the operation in the long term is a return to a normal lifestyle, wearing ordinary shoes, and an increase in physical activity. This type of surgery is most suitable for the elderly, as it is cheap and easy to perform, combined with a quick recovery.Key words: Hallux valgus, First toe, Metatarsal bones, Rhythmic walking, Biomechanical properties of the foot.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the immunomodulatory effect of ethyl acetate of extract of Passiflora foetida L leaves (EAEPL) on hypersensitivity response and antibody titer of immune cells. Hypersensitivity response test evaluated the swelling of the feet of mice, while antibody titer test evaluated the hemagglutination. Examination of antibody titer was performed in 5 groups of 25 wistar rats. All the test animals, except control group, induced by SRBC on the 3rd day intraperitoneally. The extract was given for 7 days. The hypersensitivity response test was performed in 5 groups of 25 mice (Balb/c). The groups, except control group, were given antigen (SRBC) on the 3rd day intraperitoneally and on the 7th day were administered intraplantarly. The thickness of the soles of the feet was measured using a plethysmometer before and after injecting the antigen at T4, T24 and T48. The data were processed statistically by Kruskal-Wallis then advanced test by Mann-Whitney. The group of negative control against the groups of EAEPL was significantly different (p<0.05). The antibody titer of the groups given the extract were higher than the antigen-induced group without the administration of the extract. The results show that the groups of EAEPL can increase antibody secretion. The test of hypersensitivity response showed that the group of negative control to EAEPL groups showed significantly different (p<0.05). The results showed that the swelling of the feet of mice decrease at T48. This research concludes that ethyl acetate extract of EAEPL has the immunostimulatory effect.
