Abstract

This study analyzed the complex characterization of Emma and Dave in the 2024 film Role Play using qualitative descriptive methods. By employing Morner and Rausch's (1998) characterization techniques and Gale's (2017) personality type theory, the research examined how the characters' dual identities and internal conflicts enriched the film's narrative. The primary data source was the film itself, which was thoroughly analyzed through content analysis. The findings revealed Emma as a dynamic character leading a double life: she was both a devoted wife and a skilled assassin. Her internal struggles and the emotional toll of her secret profession added depth to her role. In contrast, Dave, initially portrayed as a trusting and supportive husband, evolved into a character marked by growing suspicion and frustration, while remaining steadfast in his loyalty to his family. The study concluded that the nuanced portrayal of Emma and Dave significantly enhanced the film's narrative engagement and the viewer's emotional connection. These characterizations provided innovative insights into character development in cinematic storytelling, offering a comprehensive framework for future research in similar genres.

Abstract

This study seeks to understand the meaning of metaphors in Conan Gray's Kid Krow album. The qualitative method was used in this study. This study aims to reveal how metaphors convey the author's feelings and function as a means of strong emotional storytelling. The analysis results show that metaphors are aesthetic tools to explore universal themes such as love, loss, and adolescent identity. This study found nine metaphors and two types of meaning based on the theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1981): connotative meaning and affective meaning. The connotative meaning in these metaphors gives an additional dimension to the lyrics, while the affective meaning can evoke strong emotions in listeners. This research contributes to a richer understanding of how metaphors in music can be used as a medium to express complex human experiences.

The primary goal of the research is to analyze how representative speech acts are used in character dialogue to conve beliefs, intentions, personalities, and to understand their contribution to narrative and character development. Employing Yule's (1996) classification and Leech's (1983) theory, the study identifies 25 instances of representative speech acts categorized into statements of fact, assertions, conclusions, and descriptions. Statements of fact were found to be the most frequent (32%), followed by descriptions (28%), assertions (20%), and conclusions (20%). These representative speech acts provide significant insights into the characters’ beliefs, intentions, and personalities, contributing to the narrative and character development of the film.
