Abstract

Osteoporosis is a type of bone metabolism disorder in which bone density decreases, leading to porous and fragile bones that are easily fractured. The risk factors for osteoporosis include increasing age (over 60 years) and gender (more common in women). The clinical manifestations experienced by individuals with osteoporosis include back pain. One of the interventions that can be implemented to reduce pain is progressive muscle relaxation. This study employed a quasi-experimental design. The population and sample consisted of 28 elderly individuals divided into two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The results showed that after progressive muscle relaxation was performed, there was a significant effect in reducing pain in the experimental group, with a p-value of 0.040.

Abstract

Pruritus, or itching, varies in duration, location, and severity, and can occur in specific areas or across the entire body surface. Common pharmacological treatments include antihistamines, emollients, topical capsaicin, opioid antagonists, gabapentin, immunomodulators, immunosuppressants, tacrolimus ointment, and oral activated charcoal. Itching in patients undergoing hemodialysis is a common problem that significantly impacts patient comfort, making effective management necessary. Olive oil is known for its anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties, which may help alleviate pruritus. This study aims to examine the effect of olive oil administration on the reduction of pruritus scores in hemodialysis patients at RSI Sultan Agung Semarang. The study used a quantitative design with a quasi-experimental pre-post two-group comparison model. The sample consisted of 42 hemodialysis patients divided into two groups: the intervention group, which received olive oil and antihistamine, and the control group, which only received antihistamine. The results showed that the average pruritus score before treatment in the intervention group was 5.625, and after administration of olive oil + antihistamine, it decreased to 3.375. Statistical analysis using the Paired Samples Test showed a significant effect of olive oil + antihistamine administration on pruritus reduction (p = 0.000 < 0.05). Furthermore, there was a significant difference in effectiveness between the intervention group (olive oil + antihistamine) and the control group (antihistamine only), with a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05. In conclusion, the administration of olive oil combined with antihistamines is more effective than antihistamine alone in reducing pruritus scores in hemodialysis patients at RSI Sultan Agung Semarang.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases with a high prevalence, both globally and nationally, including in Indonesia. Proper support from healthcare providers plays a crucial role in improving knowledge and dietary adherence among hypertensive patients. This study aims to examine the relationship between healthcare support and knowledge of hypertension as well as dietary patterns among hypertensive patients in the Internal Medicine Clinic at RSI Sultan Agung Semarang. The study uses a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach, involving 140 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The results indicate that the majority of patients receive good healthcare support, possess adequate knowledge of hypertension, and follow a good dietary pattern. However, Chi-Square test results show no significant relationship between healthcare support and knowledge of hypertension (p = 0.319) or dietary patterns (p = 0.319). This suggests that other factors, such as education, experience, family support, personal motivation, and eating habits, also influence the knowledge and dietary patterns of patients. In conclusion, although healthcare support plays a role in improving knowledge and dietary adherence in hypertensive patients, other external factors contribute significantly to the outcomes.

Abstract

Breast milk is the best nutrition for babies because it contains complete nutrients and antibodies that support immunity and optimal growth and development. However, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia is still low, even though its benefits have been proven to reduce the risk of stunting, obesity, and infectious diseases. Mothers' lack of knowledge about lactation management is one of the inhibiting factors, so educational efforts are needed to improve mothers' attitudes towards breastfeeding and support their babies' health. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge about lactation management and mothers' attitudes towards breastfeeding at Dr. H Soewondo Kendal Hospital. This study used a quantitative research design with a descriptive correlation and cross-sectional approach. The number of respondents was 38 mothers selected using purposive sampling. The data collection instruments were questionnaires on knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding (15 items) and attitudes towards breastfeeding (16 items). Data analysis was performed using Spearman's rank correlation test. The results of the study showed that most of the breastfeeding mothers were aged 20-35 years (30 respondents), most of them had a high school/vocational school education (25 respondents or 65.8%), and most of them were housewives (21 respondents or 55.3%). Knowledge about lactation management was mostly adequate among 25 respondents (65.8%), and good among 13 respondents (34.2%). Attitudes toward breastfeeding were mostly adequate and good among 19 respondents (50.0%) each. There was a relationship between knowledge about lactation management and mothers' attitudes towards breastfeeding at Dr. H Soewondo Kendal Hospital with a p-value of 0.000. The Spearman correlation test also showed a relationship strength value (rho value) of 0.721, which means that there is a positive relationship: the better the level of knowledge about lactation management, the better the mothers' attitudes towards breastfeeding. It is recommended that nurses be more active in providing comprehensive and structured education on lactation management, not only limited to basic breastfeeding theory, but also covering practical skills, breastfeeding time management, and techniques for dealing with lactation problems commonly experienced by breastfeeding mothers.

Abstract

Proper care of LBW is crucial, as LBW infants are susceptible to illnesses such as infections, unstable body temperature, and respiratory disorders. Mothers' unpreparedness in caring for LBW infants is due to a lack of knowledge regarding infant care. Knowledge can be improved by providing interventions in the form of providing information using media, one of which is leaflets. This study aims to determine the effect of educational leaflets on mothers' skills in caring for LBW infants. This study used a quasi-experimental  study with a pretest-posttest with control group design. The sample size was 38 postpartum mothers who gave birth to LBW infants, consisting of 19 mothers in the intervention group and 19 mothers in the control group obtained through purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire on mothers' skills in caring for LBW infants and leaflets. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test to examine the effect of educational leaflets on mothers' skills in caring for LBW infants and the Mann-Whitney test to find differences in mothers' skills in caring for LBW infants between the intervention and control groups. There is an influence of leaflet educational media on mothers' skills in caring for LBW babies at Dr. H. Soewondo Kendal Regional General Hospital p-value = 0.000 (<0.05). There is a difference in mothers' skills in caring for LBW babies between the intervention group and the control group p value (0.002), where the average value of mothers' skills between the intervention group and the control group shows a difference of 2.31. Education about LBW care through leaflet media improves parents' skills in caring for LBW at home, because leaflets provide informative visualization of knowledge as a medium that is easy to understand.

Abstract

Low Back Pain (LBP) is one of the most common musculoskeletal health problems experienced by various age groups and can significantly affect quality of life and reduce patient productivity. LBP is often associated with multiple risk factors, both biological, psychological, and social, thus requiring special attention in terms of management and prevention. This study aims to analyze the factors associated with pain levels among LBP patients at the Neurology Clinic of Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital Semarang. This research employed an observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 100 patients selected using a total sampling technique according to inclusion criteria. Data were collected through structured interviews and questionnaires covering respondents’ demographics, medical history, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), and pain level assessment. The results showed that the majority of patients were female (53%) and aged ≤50 years (74%). Most respondents had moderate physical activity levels (75%) and normal BMI. Bivariate analysis revealed a strong relationship between age, physical activity, and pain level, while gender showed a moderate relationship with pain intensity. Occupational factors were also found to influence patients’ pain perception. These findings indicate that age, gender, physical activity, BMI, and occupation are important variables associated with pain in LBP patients. Therefore, promotive, preventive, and rehabilitative interventions focusing on physical activity regulation, healthy lifestyle education, and early detection of risk factors are recommended to improve the quality of life of patients with LBP.

Abstract

In general, LBW infants do not have a mature immune system to adapt due to the immaturity of the infant's organ systems. Improving the physiological response of LBW infants can be done using an inexpensive, easy-to-do, and effective intervention, namely the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) method. This study aims to determine the effect of the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) method on the physiological response of LBW infants. This study used a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest with control group design. The sample size was 34 LBW infants born at Dr. H. Soewondo Kendal Regional General Hospital, obtained through an infinite population technique. Data were collected using observation sheets and bedside monitors. Data analysis was performed using a paired t-test to determine the effect of the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) method on the physiological response of LBW infants. The results showed that there was an effect of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on temperature (p-value 0.000), respiratory rate (p-value 0.000), pulse rate (p-value 0.000) and oxygen saturation (p-value 0.000) in LBW babies. There was an effect of standard care on temperature (p-value 0.000), respiratory rate (p-value 0.006), pulse rate (p-value 0.028) and oxygen saturation (p-value 0.000) in LBW babies. There was a difference in the physiological response of LBW babies between those given KMC and the nesting care control group, where KMC showed a better physiological response with a temperature difference of 1,230C, respiratory rate of 5.41 x/minute, pulse rate of 9.65x/minute and 1,230C, respiratory rate of 5.41 x/minute, pulse rate of 9.65x/minute and oxygen saturation of 2.23%.

Abstract

Hospitalization in preschool children often causes anxiety due to separation from parents, frightening medical procedures, and the unfamiliar hospital environment. Anxiety at an early age can have both short- and long-term negative impacts, such as refusal of medical treatment, difficulty cooperating with health professionals, and even traumatic experiences related to hospitals. One nursing intervention to reduce anxiety is play therapy, and storytelling is considered effective because it allows children to express their feelings and fears through imagination and enjoyable narratives. Objective: This study aimed to determine whether preschool children hospitalized in the Flamboyan Ward of Harapan Anda Islamic Hospital, Tegal, experienced a reduction in anxiety levels after being given therapeutic storytelling interventions using picture storybooks. Method: This study used a one-group pre-test–post-test design. Purposive sampling was employed to recruit 40 preschool children aged three to six years. Anxiety levels were measured using the DASS-42 questionnaire, consisting of 14 items related to anxiety. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test to compare pre- and post-intervention scores. Results: The findings showed that the majority of children after the intervention were in the normal category (67.5%), compared to 40% who experienced significant anxiety before the intervention. The Wilcoxon test produced a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that therapeutic storytelling using picture storybooks significantly reduced anxiety levels in hospitalized preschool children. Conclusion: Therapeutic storytelling can be considered a simple, enjoyable, and effective non-pharmacological intervention for pediatric nurses to reduce anxiety among preschool children during hospitalization.
