Abstract

Abstract Motivation has a very important role in learning. This motivation leds to enthusiams in learning and can improve learning outcomes. This research aims to find out what are the media and strategies that teachers use to motivating students in learning English online. The second aims is to find out how the students involvement in learning English online. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The participants in this research are three of English teachers and three of 10th grade students in SMK PUI Majalengka. The data were collected by observation and interview. The result showed that teachers often using WhatsApp during learning English online. Then, the strategies used by teachers to students motivation for learning English online were reminding the study schedule, giving a games or quizz, giving more interesting materials, and giving Intermezzo. Besides, student involvement in online learning is quite good. Regarding the media used during online learning of English, two students stated that the students not satisfied using WhatsApp, and the students want to use Zoom. Meanwhile, one student stated that satisfied using WhatsApp, but the student want to use E-learning with added video features. However, WhatsApp received a positive response from students. Students stated that WhatsApp made it very easy for them to access materials anytime and anywhere.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to identify and describe the type of transitivity that appeared in the Narrative text titled "Issumboshi" of the English textbook for Grade X Senior high published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The method employed in this study was qualitative, and the researcher was the central instrument. The methodology utilized in critical discourse analysis (CDA), The collected data were analyzed with SFL that emphasized the transitivity system. This study is an adaptation of Nguyen (2012). To collect, categorize, tabulate, number, and compute the data. In this study, a qualitative methodology was employed, and the researcher played a crucial role. Critical discourse analysis's methodology (CDA), The collected data was analyzed with SFL which emphasizes the transitivity system. This study is based on Nguyen (2012). To gather, classify, tabulate, number, and calculate the data. The results of the study based on data analysis show that the most dominant process is Material Process which appears 56 times, The most dominant participant is an actor which appears 56 times, and the most dominant circumstance is Location which appears to consist of Place 19 times and Time 17 Times. In this story, the author describes most of the players as an actor that do several activities and actions.

Abstract

There are a lot of problems and difficulties that face by students in the speaking activities. Teacher need a learning technique to apply especially in speaking activities and teacher often use is the grouping technique thus the teacher assigns them a group to work with which students have their own perception towards group work in speaking activities. This study aimed to know how teacher implement group work in speaking activities and to find out students perception on group work in speking activities. This research is a case study research using a qualitative approach. The participants of this study were 26 tenth-grade students in one of the senior high schools in Majalengka. The results showed that teacher implemented group work in speaking activities and have five steps to implemented it, and the students perception on group work is that there are advantages doing group work in speaking activities, indicating that students have a positive perception on group work in speaking activities. Although there are perceptions of group work have many advantage, students also have the perceptions of group work in speaking activities have disadvantage. Students feel like there are a group member that doesn’t contribute much in the group especially in speaking activities. However students feel there are disadvantage on group work in speaking activities but it still cannot compare with the many advantage on the implementation of group work in speaking activities.

Abstract

Pronunciation is as an aspect of the language has a great influence onour successful communication but it is still ignored by teachers, who rather pay attention to teaching grammar as they feel more important. The objective of the study isto find out ability in pronouning the English voiceless plosive consonants [P], [T], [K] at English Study Program at University Of Baturaja.The population of this research wasthe students of English Education Study Program at Baturaja University. The researcher took only in semester V because students have been learnt speaking I,II, III dan pronounciation courses. Based on the finding, it could be concluded as follow; the frequency students’ score criteria described there were 4 students (18,19%) who gained score 80-100 in level very good, 8students (36,36%) who gained score 66-79 in level good, 7 students (31,81%) who gained score 56-65 in level enough, 3students (13,64%) who gained score 46-55 in level low and no students got score < 45 in level fail. Based on calculation above, the mean score 65,15 showed that in identifying the Fifth Semester Students’ ability in Pronouncing the English Voiceless Plosive Consonants at English Study Program at University of Baturaja was good.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the students’ ability in translating argumentative text from Indonesian into English at English Study Program of Baturaja University. In analyzing the data the writer used descriptive method. The population of this study was the English Study Program of Baturaja University in academic year 2020/2021 that consisted of 35 students. Based on pre-observation, most of the students at English Study Program of Baturaja University need to acquire translation ability. Because not all people know the meaning of English words, sentences or text, English students can be a tool to help people to communicate with others. Based on the sample was taken by using simple random sample and the writer put three categories on the sample. The categories are (1) go to a good hat store and buy a big top hat, (2) make one slip of paper for each individual in the population and place all of the slips in the hat, (3) make sure you used standard-sized slips of paper so that they will all be the same shape, size, and weight. The students percentage score in argumentative text test in 66,1 % in good level mastery. It meant that an analysis students’ ability in translating from Indonesian into English at English Study Program of Baturaja University is accurate.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the effectiveness of the blended learning model on reading skill for tenth grade at MA Asyifa’ Baturaja. This study used the qualitative descriptive research design. The population of this research was 19 students of Tenth grade at MA Asyifa’ Baturaja. The researcher took sample by used total sampling technique because the total population was less than 100 respondent. The data was collected by used questionnaire that consists of 20 statements that consist 0f 4 categories put forward by Keller, namely: Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction (ARCS). The researcher used descriptive statistics based on the percentages obtained from the result of recapitulation. Based on theory ARCS the researcher get the results, the attention percentage 64,4% in good category, relevance percentage 62% in good category, confidence percentage 66,75% in good category and satisfaction percentage 57,25% in fair category. From percentage of each category, the researcher get average 62,6% in the good category. The finding indicated that analysis the effectiveness of blended learning model on reading skill is good category, in sense blended learning is effective during pandemic Covid-19.

Abstract

This study analyzed students’ perception of online learning to enchance their reading comprehension skill. This study used the descriptive qualitative. The population of this research was students of Eleventh Grade Studens of SMA Trisakti Baturaja. The researcher took all of the sample by applying total sampling. The data was collected through the questionnaire. It consist of 10 statements. Then, the researcher used five percentage for analyzing the data. The result of this research were many students argued that they were disagree of online learning to enchance their reading comprehension skill. The data were in low criteria (61,46). It means that the students’ response toward the use of Online Learning to enchance their reading skill is not an effective tool for their learning.

Abstract

This research aims to determine English teacher of media based learning at MTs al azhar center Baturaja during pandemic covid-19. This research used descriptive qualitative case study. The subject of this research were two teachers majoring in English at MTs al azhar center Baturaja. The data was collected through the direct in interview with the teacher. The result of this study are the teachers have used media based learning such as Google classroom in very well. The teacher used Google classroom they think is very effective. google classroom can make the teacher challenge their self to be more productive to give knowledge for students. Google classroom useful for the teacher, the teacher can use many features such as class assignment features, material features and questions features. The teacher can connect google classroom in HP, laptop or computer so the teacher don’t need more time to teach the students. The teacher also increases student motivation because students easily send assignment and get materials. There are two challenge factors in using google classroom. The first is facility factor and the second is the student factor. Teachers provide an alternative in the form of using a white board if there are obstacles such as internet access . then, students also sometimes have to find alternative networks such as wifi to send assignments.

Abstract

This study is aimed at improving XI students’ speaking abilit y of SMK Sentosa Bhakti Baturaja through the use of Talking Chips. The use of Talking Chips is expected to improve students’ speaking ability. This study was categorized as an experimental research. Pre-experimental design was used in this study. There was one class for Tryout and one class as a treatment class. The population of this study was 315 and the sample was 34 students in TKJ2 class. They have been selected by using cluster random sampling. The students’ taught by using Talking Chips strategy. The data were presented in the form of transcripts. The data collected by oral test. To check whether the application of instruction run well, it was designed the students were evaluated by using paired sample t-test. The result of paired sample t-test showed that there is a significant difference between students’ score in pre-test and post-test. The result of the study shows that Talking Chips improved the teaching of speaking and the students’ speaking ability. The mean scores of pretest was 59.76 while the mean scores of post-test was 69,59. It indicates that there was a statistical difference between the mean scores of the pre-test and the post-test. This implies that there was significant improvement of students’ speaking abilit y by using talking chips strategy to the Eleventh Grade Students of SMK Sentosa Bhakti Baturaja.

Abstract

This study aims to find out what is the students’ perception of Google Classroom on online learning of English education study program at Baturaja University. This study used descriptive quantitative method. The population of this research was 91 students of English education study program. The researcher only took 73 students namely the 4th, 6th and 8th semester as the sample by applying purposive sampling. The data was collected through the questionnaire with Google form as an intermediary application. It consists of 16 statements. Then the researcher used five points of Likert Scale for analyzing the data based on percentage interval and Google form. The result of this research was students had positive response and support Google Classroom as learning media in online learning. It showed that Google Classroom is an effective tool for online learning because it can help the students to improve their learning through an active participation and Google Classroom is an easy tool to use and learning because of its features and it can access anywhere and make save time.
