Abstract

One kind of snack that Indonesian people often consume is potato chips. Mostly, potato chips processors use the vegetable potato 'Granola variety' as the raw material. Meanwhile, a kind of potato variety that fits the chips raw material is Atlantik. Nevertheless, the availability is limited. Indonesian Vegetables Research Insitute (IVegRI) has an effort to create potato varieties that are suitable as the food industrial raw material. The research objective was to identify the financial feasibility of potato chip processing from six different potato varieties' raw materials. The study was conducted in Lembang sub-district, West Java Province, from April to August 2020. Six potato varieties, namely AR 08, Sangkuriang, Medians, Papita, Spudy and Atlantik, were planted in IP2TP Margahayu, Lembang-West Java area, 100 m2 for each variety. After harvesting, the potatoes were processed as chips. The financial feasibility of potato chips processing was calculated using the cost and revenue of potato chips processing analysis and the Benefit-Cost Ratio. The finding showed that Medians generated the highest revenue of the six potato variety raw material. It was 1,113,250 IDR, with the profit being 193,554 IDR. In the meantime, based on B/C ratio analysis, five profitable potato varieties used as the chip's material were Medians, Papita, Spudy, Sangkuriang and Atlantik, with the B/C score > 1. The three highest B/C score were Spudy, Atlantik and Medians. The score was 1.41, 1.24 and 1.21, respectively.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on all interrelated lines of life. Biodiversity is one of the compensations for the domino impact of a series of life-line destruction. The lockdown policy and restrictions on community activities for a long time causes forests and wild animals to tend to have small disturbance values. However, when most of business condition are come down which in causes increased unemployment due to abnormal business wheels, there is potential for biodiversity destruction. The threat of damage to biodiversity is a domino effect of increased hunting of wild animals and increase wildlife trade. An anticipatory movement carried out by biology student organizations and NGO’s through monitoring illegal wildlife trade, increasing conservation research and training activities in protected and non-protected biodiversity areas and increasing community participation which will greatly help maintain biodiversity conservation at the national to global level become a priority for the conservation of biodiversity sustainability.

Abstract

Biodiversity informatics has been developed for more than 30 years at the Research Center for Biology – Indonesian Institute of Sciences. However, the goal of digitizing all biological specimen data and distributing it to a biodiversity information network has not been achieved. The development of Biodiversity information at the Research Center for Biology was struggled to keep up with the system requirements and rapid technological advancements. Learning from these three decades of experience, a roadmap for the development of biodiversity informatics must be built by taking into account the successes that have been achieved and dismiss all past mistakes. The biodiversity informatics roadmap was made as a reference for system development for the next four years. The development of biodiversity informatics involves all stakeholders who were incorporated into working groups according to their expertise. Each step of database application development is carried out by one of the working groups and supervised by the data mobilization policy working group. In addition to the application of the biological specimen database, the development of this biodiversity informatics also formulates the development of a national taxonomic reference database and a data warehouse as a sharing platform of Indonesian biodiversity data. The whole set of working procedures for the development of biodiversity informatics will be recorded in various documents that are easily understood by parties involved or not involved in the development of biodiversity informatics. It is hoped that this road map for biodiversity informatics will become a benchmark for the future development, so that it can continue to run sustainably in accordance with technological advancements and system requirements.

Abstract

Bacillus is a bacterium that has the ability to survive in unfavorable environmental conditions, one of which is in nutrient-poor soils such as the Liwa Botanical Gardens. Bacillus isolates have been obtained from the soil of the Liwa Botanical Gardens which have lipolytic abilities. This study aimed to determine the activity of lipolytic bacteria isolates from Bacillus from Liwa Botanical Gardens. In this study, Bacillus was isolated from the soil of the Liwa Botanical Gardens using a graded dilution method, using Nutrient Agar media. The Bacillus isolates obtained were then purified in Nutrient agar media. Bacillus isolates were inoculated in lipase test media with a composition of 0.01% methyl red, 10 g peptone, and Nutrient Agar, 5% sterile olive oil, 2.5% Tween-80, 5 g NaCl, 0.1 g CaCl2.2H2O. The results of this study obtained 5 isolates of Bacillus which had fairly good growth, namely isolates BP 13, BP 14, BP16, TMA 13, TSR 5. With the results obtained the largest lipolytic activity was isolate BP 16 with an average index value of 6.34 cm while the lowest lipolytic activity was TMA13 isolate with an average index value of 2,345 cm.

Abstract

Bacillus sp is a bacterium that is commonly found in soil, water, air and plant debris, has the ability to produce enzymes and degrade natural substrates so that it contributes to the nutrient cycle. The Kebun Raya Liwa area is located at an altitude between 890 to 948 meters above sea level where at this altitude is included in a hilly area. With varying topographic conditions so that it has different soil conditions. This can trigger the diversity of Bacillus sp. The purpose of this study was to determine the diversity index of Bacillus sp in the Liwa Botanical Gardens soil. This research was conducted at the microbiology laboratory of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences faculty, Lampung University. The method used is sampling using five different types of soil, namely litter soil, biopori soil, arase sloping soil, ordinary soil, and ordinary arase soil. The isolation technique uses the pour plate method with multilevel dilutions. Calculation of diversity using a calculation method that refers to the calculation of Shanon Wiener. The results of this study obtained the highest diversity of Bacillus sp in litter soil with a total index of 2.488464 indicating a moderate level of diversity while the lowest total value was obtained in biopore soil with a value of 1.351604 indicating a moderate level of diversity. The high and low diversity of Bacillus sp bacteria can be caused by environmental conditions. In this study, the dominant morphology of Bacillus sp is circular colony shape.

Abstract

Whiteflies Aleurodicus dispersus and Bemisia tabaci are major pest on several horticultural crops because of their feeding activity which absorbs fluids through the phloem. They are also Geminivirus vectors. Whiteflies reduce yield crop around 30%-100% on high attack. Whiteflies have morphological variety that affect feeding and reproduction behaviour in certain host plant. Identification was carried out on the puparium shape because of phenotype variations depend on the physical character of the leaf surface. This research aimed to study differences the morphology of whiteflies puparium in several plants and to create an identification key in PDF format. This research used the literature study method from textbooks and published national and international journal. The samples were taken from Bandung Regency and West Bandung Regency, West Java on tomatoes, chayote, peanuts, and beans. Then puparium was prepared in a microscope slides-mounted and morphological identification was carried out. The result obtained are subdorsum of A. dispersus has compound pores and thorax without tracheal comb. Lingula is very long, usually extending past the vasiform orifice and has two pairs of setae at the end. While the puparium of B. tabaci has lobe-shaped lingula and usually short not extending past vasiform orifice. Puparium has caudal furrow and a pair of caudal setae at the end. Subdorsum without compound pores and submarginal row of papillae absent. The result of puparium observation was photographed and used for making identification key in PDF format. Other literature study on the biological character and the whiteflies control technique are carried out to support comprehensive information for making the identification key. This identification key in PDF format can be used as a tool to identify A. dispersus and B. tabaci.

Abstract

Oreochromis niloticus is the second most widely cultivated aquaculture product worldwide. Fish-meal (FM) and fish oil (FO) as the main ingredients in the manufacture of aquaculture feed can cause ongoing problems. An alternative feed source is needed with a good aquafeed formula for Tilapia with good ingredients, preferably FMFO and adding one that can increase the growth rate of fish. The method used in this review is a literature study. Making diet formulations on each alternative ingredient, experimental design and sampling, analytical calculations and nutritional content of fish samples. The results of alternative feeds that increase the growth rate of Tilapia on microalgae with the most effective formulation, 100% microalgae (100NS), and yeast fermentation Poultry by-product meal with the most effective formulation as much as 20% FPBM. Alternative feed ingredients that can replace FMFO in these studies that can increase growth in Tilapia are feeds that are given alternative ingredients, microalgae and fermented yeast Poultry by-product meal. In the diet feed, both microalgae and yeast fermented feeds. Poultry by-products appear to produce better FCR and SGR than conventional feeds.
