Abstract

Language not only functions as a means of conveying information, but also as a means of carrying out actions through speech, especially in a political context where language can shape public opinion and legitimize power. This study aims to analyze the types and functions of illocutionary acts in Donald Trump's speech announcing the Gaza ceasefire. The method used is descriptive qualitative with documentation techniques, where data in the form of speech utterances are transcribed, selected, and classified based on Austin's (1962) and Searle's (1969) speech act theories. The research results show that assertive speech acts were the most dominant type (6 data), used to describe situations, express evaluations, and build peace narratives. In addition, expressive speech acts (5 data) were found expressing gratitude and appreciation, commissive speech acts (2 data) indicating a commitment to future cooperation, and directive speech acts (2 data) which were light and rhetorical in nature. No declarative speech acts were found in this speech. In conclusion, Trump's speech did not aim to create direct legal or institutional action, but rather to frame his role as a peacemaker and diplomatic success through linguistic construction. These findings underscore the importance of pragmatic analysis in understanding political communication strategies and how language is used to shape public perceptions in the context of international relations.

Abstract

This research analyzes and identifies English terms commonly used in live shopping e-commerce platforms and investigates their potential as authentic materials for developing EFL learners’ vocabulary and speaking skills. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design. The study identified and categorized English terms commonly used in live shopping e-commerce platforms, specifically Shopee and TikTok, based on their function in live interactions. Terms were grouped into Promotions & Discounts, Urgency & Time, Products & Quality, Transactions & Payments, Digital Engagement & Interaction, Fun/Trendy/Review, and Other/General Marketing Terms. These expressions are strategically employed by hosts to attract viewers, encourage purchases, and maintain engagement in real time. The findings show that these terms appear in both spoken and written communication, including product descriptions, live announcements, and chat interactions. They provide authentic materials for EFL learners, offering practical language for developing vocabulary and speaking skills across persuasive, transactional, interactive, descriptive, and professional communication contexts in digital commerce. The study also found that live hosts on Shopee and TikTok frequently use English terms in both spoken and written communication during live shopping sessions. These terms, drawn from promotions, product descriptions, transactions, digital engagement, and marketing interactions, serve strategic purposes such as attracting viewers, encouraging purchases, and maintaining engagement. They were categorized into seven functional groups: Promotions & Discounts, Urgency & Time, Products & Quality, Transactions & Payments, Digital Engagement & Interaction, Fun/Trendy/Review, and Other/General Marketing Terms. These English terms provide authentic material for EFL learners, offering exposure to real-world, contextually meaningful language. They support vocabulary expansion, transactional speaking, persuasive and promotional skills, interactive communication, descriptive and evaluative speaking, as well as marketing and strategic discourse. By integrating these terms into classroom activities such as role-plays, simulations, and presentations, learners can develop functional and professional English skills applicable to digital commerce contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines signs, myths, and cultural ideology in three Muna fables—Karambau Kainsedodo, Karambau bhe Bhiku, and Tula-tulano Alaga-alaga bhe Abhiku-abhiku—through Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework. It aims to identify the sign structures embedded in the narrative elements of the fables, analyze their denotative and connotative meanings, and interpret the myths and cultural ideologies naturalized in the texts. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study draws on documented Muna fable texts as its primary data and applies close reading and semiotic interpretation. The units of analysis include characters, actions, objects, and events functioning as dominant signs in the narratives. The findings show that the three fables operate through layered signification. At the denotative level, they present simple events such as abduction, competition, and transformation. At the connotative level, these events and characters symbolize power, intelligence, obedience, and moral consequence. At the mythic level, the fables naturalize cultural ideologies related to social hierarchy, collective intelligence, and obedience to customary norms. The study concludes that Muna fables function as ideological cultural texts that reproduce the social values and worldview of the Muna.

Abstract

This study examines recurring patterns and actions found in Amon’s discourse in The Legend of Korra Season 1. Language is not only a means of communication but also a tool for constructing ideology, influencing audiences, and shaping social relationships. This study aims to identify the recurring linguistic patterns used by Amon and to analyze the social actions carried out through these repetitions. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a discourse analysis approach. Data were collected from Amon’s dialogues and speeches throughout Season 1 of The Legend of Korra. The analysis is based on Barbara Johnstone’s theory of recurring forms and actions, supported by Teun van Dijk’s discourse manipulation theory and Aristotle’s concept of persuasion. The findings reveal four dominant recurring forms in Amon’s discourse: benders, equality, revolution, and followers. These recurring forms perform various recurring actions, including constructing an image of the enemy, legitimizing ideology, building solidarity, mobilizing followers, and establishing leadership authority. This study concludes that repetition in Amon’s discourse functions not merely as a linguistic feature, but as a discursive strategy used to shape ideology, social identity, and collective action. Furthermore, these findings suggest that fictional discourse can reflect real-world practices in terms of persuasion, power, and ideological influence.

Abstract

English proficiency plays an important role in nursing education because nursing students are required to access academic resources, understand medical terminology, and communicate effectively in educational and professional contexts. However, learning English remains challenging for many nursing students who study it as a foreign language. This study aimed to explore the challenges experienced by nursing students in learning English within their academic environment. A qualitative research design was employed, involving five nursing students from the Nursing Study Program at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng. The participants were selected using purposive sampling, and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The findings revealed four major challenges: difficulties in understanding medical English vocabulary, lack of confidence in speaking English, limited opportunities to practice English due to academic workload, and challenges in utilizing English learning resources effectively. These challenges influenced students’ participation, comprehension of learning materials, and engagement in English learning activities. The study suggests the need for supportive instructional strategies, contextualized English materials, and increased opportunities for meaningful language practice to enhance nursing students’ English learning experiences.

This study examines the use of colloquial language in the song lyrics of Olivia Rodrigo’s album SOUR through a sociolinguistic perspective. Colloquial language refers to informal expressions commonly used in everyday spoken communication, including contractions, shortened pronunciations, and conversational expressions. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of colloquial language found in the album and to analyze their social functions in conveying meaning and emotion. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using a sociolinguistic approach. The data source consisted of song lyrics from Olivia Rodrigo’s SOUR album released in 2021. The data were collected through documentation and note-taking techniques by listening to the songs, reading the lyrics, identifying colloquial expressions, and classifying the data into several categories. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis based on sociolinguistic theories proposed by Holmes, Trudgill, and Labov. The findings reveal that the album contains several forms of colloquial language, including contractions, informal expressions, shortened pronunciations, emotional expressions, and conversational ellipsis. The study also shows that colloquial language functions to create natural communication, strengthen emotional expression, establish interpersonal closeness, and represent youth identity in popular culture. Overall, colloquial language in the SOUR album reflects authentic spoken communication and meaningful social interaction.
