Abstract

Abstract

This research discusses the features and function of women’s language used by Jo March in the Little Women movie. The researcher conducted this research by using Lakoff's theory (2004) to identify the types of women’s language features and Holmes and Wilson's theory (2022) to identify the function of women’s language. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from Jo March's speech. In this study, the researcher found 9 out of 10 types of women’s language features which are lexical hedges or fillers, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjectives, precise color terms, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, super polite forms, avoidance of strong swear words and emphatic stress. The most dominant women’s language feature is hypercorrect grammar with 10 out of 35 Jo March utterances. There are 2 functions of the women’s language features which are weakening function (hedges devices) and strengthening function (booster devices). Then the most dominant function of women’s language features is weakening function (hedges devices) with 20 out of 35 Jo March utterances. This study contributes to sociolinguistic studies by demonstrating how women’s language features and their functions, based on Lakoff’s and Holmes and Wilson’s theories, are represented through a female character in movie.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze words to find out the types of derivational morphemes and morphological processes contained in the short story Bookstore Sisters by Alice Hoffman. This study applies the descriptive qualitative method, using the theoretical frameworks proposed by Katamba & Stonham (2006) and Kridalaksana (2010). From the result of this research, the words can be categorized based on the type of derivational morpheme: the first is suffixes with thepercentage of 80%. The second is prefixes, they have a percentage of 20%. The result of the morphological process can be categorized based on part of speech into eight types. In terms of morphological processes, derivational morphemes most commonly produce adverbs, followed by adjectives and nouns, with several processes occurring without changes in word class but resulting in semantic modification. These results indicate that derivational affixation plays a significant role in shaping word formation in literary texts. This study contributes to morphological studies by providing empirical evidence of derivational processes in English short stories and may serve as a reference for further  linguistic and literary research.

Abstract

This study investigates how beauty-related language on TikTok constructs and normalizes beauty ideals within K-beauty discourse. Focusing on recurring  expressions such as glass skin, flawless, and perfect V-shape face, the research aims to examine how linguistic repetition contributes to cultural pressure and digital identity formation among users. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected from selected TikTok videos and their comment sections and analyzed through Critical Discourse Analysis. The findings reveal that beauty language on TikTok functions as more than aesthetic description; it operates as a discursive mechanism that reinforces normative standards, emotional alignment, and algorithm-driven visibility. This study contributes to digital discourse research by highlighting the central role of language in shaping beauty ideology and identity performance within participatory social media environments.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of onomatopoeia in the 9 Lives Webtoon and to determine the translation strategies used by the translator during the analysis. This study adopted a qualitative approach, with data collected by reading and classifying words containing different types of onomatopoeia and translation strategies in the 9 Lives Webtoon. In conducting this research, the researcher applied theories from Bredin for types of onomatopoeia and Baker for translation strategies. As a result of the data interpretation, three types of onomatopoeia were identified in the Webtoon: 17 instances of direct, 8 associative, and 5 exemplary types. Regarding translation strategies, there were 22 cases of cultural substitution, 5 of a loan word or loan word plus explanation, and 3 of paraphrasing using related words.

Abstract

This study examines postcolonial hybridity in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s short story The New Husband by focusing on everyday domestic practices through which identity is negotiated. According on Bhabha’s (1994) concept of hybridity, the research analyzes how language use, food practices, naming, and social etiquette reflect an in-between cultural position shaped by unequal power relations. Using a qualitative textual analysis based on close reading, the study finds that hybridity in the story is produced not through equal cultural exchange but through subtle forms of coercion within the domestic sphere, where patriarchal authority mirrors colonial domination. This research contributes to postcolonial hybridity studies by highlighting the home as a critical site of identity negotiation and by emphasizing women’s lived experiences of hybridity at the intimate, everyday level.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of signs in political cartoons based on Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory, specifically icons, indices, and symbols. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, analyzing 12 political cartoons retrieved from the Instagram account @political_cartoon_gallery in June 2025. The results of the research indicate that political cartoons convey social and political criticism through visual signs with deep meanings, such as visual resemblance (icons), cause-and-effect relationships (index), and meanings based on social conventions (symbols). These findings suggest that political cartoons serve as an effective medium for conveying ideological messages and criticism of global issues. This research is expected to contribute to the development of visual semiotics research and enhance public understanding of the hidden meanings in visual media.
