Abstract

Translation is a process of rewriting someone's ideas to dismiss without reducing understanding of the meaning and meaning to be conveyed. The scope of the translation is very broad, where translation is not only limited to translating a formal or informal text, but also at a level of aspects such as linguistics, literature and culture. Abstract

Technical term is a word that has a specific meaning within a specific field of expertise. Translation of technical terms is challenging and becomes one of the most factors influencing the process of translation. This paper discusses about the pattern of translation of technical terms in disaster management, with the focus on translation techniques and translation quality. This study analyses the translation of technical terms made by novice/student translators. The data include words and phrases belonging to technical terms in disaster management. The translation techniques used by the translators to render the meaning of the technical terms in disaster management were categorized based on those proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The translation quality was measured with the translation quality assessment proposed by Nababan, Nuraeni, and Sumardiono(2012). Patterns of translation were then drawn. The examination reveals that there are three patterns used by eight translators in conveying the meaning of technical terms in disaster management. This study also pinpoints possible causes underlying the usage of translation technique in search of equivalences

Abstract

Successful classroom verbal interactions will occur when both the teacher and the students intend to be cooperative conversational agents contributing to the conversation's aims. In Pragmatics, this underlying principle is called Grice’s conversational maxims. However, in the classroom, both sides often intentionally flout these conversational maxims. Thus, this research aimed to conduct a pragmatic analysis to investigate the types of Grice’s conversational maxims violated by the main character of Freedom Writers movie along with the categories of teacher’s verbal interactions found in that movie under Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System (FIACS). Using the document analysis method, the researcher used the movie transcript as the primary document to be analyzed. The findings showed that the four maxims were violated intentionally for several reasons, including warning the students of the consequences of their actions, encouraging them, avoiding certain topics of discussion, and emphasizing important messages without blatantly stating them to the whole class, and avoiding hurting the students’ feelings. Meanwhile, under Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories (FIAC), direct and indirect talks could be found in the movie. The result of this study can provide educators and pre-service teachers a glimpse of the importance of promoting appropriate classroom verbal interactions by analyzing the quality of classroom verbal interaction in terms of Grice’s Conversational Maxims and Flanders’ Interaction Analysis.

Abstract

This study has an aim to describe the teaching learning process by the teacher and the students in junior high school. The researcher wants to describe about the teaching learning process and the factors dealing with the problems on how the process of teaching and learning English for the junior high school students. The researcher chooses the class eight of junior high school students in SMP AL-Islam Kartasura as the source. The other source is taken from the teachers of SMP Al-Islam Kartasura. The data are collected then analyzed by descriptive qualitative method. From the result, it can be concluded that the teaching learning process on the class eight students of the junior high school of SMP Al-Islam Kartasura is as follows; preparation, teaching learning process, material, media, teacher role, students role, obstacles and the solutions.

Abstract

Establishing equivalence within bilingual texts means saying the same message in different ways. Among numerous theories and views about equivalence is the theory which perceives equivalence as natural or directional. Within the theory, natural equivalence and directional equivalence seem to be quite the opposite but they are in fact interlinked. Bilingual texts composing of Indonesian text and English text are examined to reveal how equivalence, viewed under the framework, works. The examination reveals that the correspondence between constituents of both texts shows the features of: natural equivalence, directional equivalence and non-equivalence. The examination also uncovers the features of both natural equivalence and directional equivalence identified in a single construction. From this study, a brief sketch is obtained that natural equivalence and directional equivalence are not two extremes in the axis of equivalence but both form a tendency in terms of equivalence.

Abstract

This research aims at explaining communication strategies (CS) used by the 4th semester students of English education in University of Muhammadiyah Semarang. Data gained from the transcription of YouTube video in each channel owned by students. This descriptive qualitative study observed the frequency of communication strategies employed by students by analyzing their utterance used Tarone’s typologies of communication strategies. Based on the analysis, it can be seen that the use of communication strategies in speaking class were dominated by Topic Avoidance (28%), followed by Message Abandonment (24%), and Approximation (20%). After that, it is followed by Mime (16%), and Literal Translation (12%). It can also be said that the 4th semester students of English department of University of Muhammadiyah Semarang employed 25 communication strategies in their YouTube video.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to find out the translation quality of tourism brochure in Solo in terms of its accuracy, acceptability and readability. The research method applied was descriptive-qualitative. The source of data consists of documents and informants selected with purposive sampling technique. The data were Indonesian-English tourism brochure in the form of words, phrases, clauses and sentences. The other data were taken from questionnaires assessed by three respondents. The results of the translation quality show that the translation of tourism brochure in Solo is accurate, acceptable and readable.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to find directives speech acts and to explain how directives speech acts which performed in the film Iron Man 2. This research belongs to qualitative research. This research uses purposive sampling techniques in order to analyz directives speech acts. This research instruments which used are Laptop, internet, and film Iron Man 2. In analysing data, the researcher conducted the analysis by describing the context of data, identifying each utterance’s directive, and classifying directives category. There are 152 directives speech acts found in the film Iron Man 2. In details, 152 directive speech acts comprises 6 advising, 20 commanding, 26 ordering, 76 questioning and 24 requesting. It means that directives speech acts can unfold the characterization of characters in film.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to identify the kinds of deixis that are used in the song lyrics Back To You, to find out the dominant types of deixis that are used in the song lyrics Back To You. This research belongs to qualitative research. The researcher uses observation method, while the data collection techniques is listening and analyzing the songs of “Back to you” by Selena Gomez. The result of this research is the song lyrics of Back To You use all types of deixis. Person deixis almost occurs in every lyric of Back To You. There are 45 data of person deixis consisting of first, second and third person deixis. In addition, the other types such as time deixis (2 data) and place deixis (1 datum) also occur in a song of Back To You. Most of personal deixis in Back To You song lyric refer to the speaker itself which are encoded by first singular person deixis like I and My. While for first plural person deixis which are We mostly refer to the speaker.

Abstract

This study discusses the translation quality comparison produced by SDL Free Translate and Tradukka online translation services. This study includes qualitative descriptive research which is using discussion methods, questionnaires and interviews. The result of this study is the quality of the translation produced by Tradukka is more accurate, acceptable and readable than SDL Free Translate. It can be showed by percentage of 9.8% for the quality of SDL Free translations and 11.3% for translations produced by Tradukka. From the results of the analysis found that not all of online translation services have good translating capacity. It is based on the quality of the translation produced between the two online translation services above.
