Abstract

Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta has established its graduate’s quality target as much as ≥ 450 for their English competence measured by standardized TOEIC test. To meet the target, LPIDB as the language center of UMS has provided the students with a kind of speaking activity called English Tutorial Program (ETP). The tutors are active students of at least semester 3 who have got several trainings on conducting the material. This study was aimed at measuring the influence of the students’ perception toward ETP activities and fasilities toward their English ability. The data were collected by giving questionnaires to 200 respondents chosen by using simple random sampling. The data then were analyzed by using multiple linear regression. The result of the study shows that the students’ perception of ETP facilities and activities gave significant influence on their English ability. It was shown by t-value of 4.293 for the perception on facilities and 4.977 for the perception of activities.

Abstract

The ability for beginning the lesson can encourage students’ interest and motivation earlier in learning. That view must be understood more by the students when they practiced in micro teaching subject. They were expected to apply it for training them in minimizes the use of mother tongue and maximize the use of target language. The aim of this research is to know the variation of classroom languages especially for beginning the lesson applied by sixth semester students in micro teaching practice. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. Data was collected by using observation and interview. The result shows that variation of classroom languages for beginning the lesson are still minimize and tend to be limited on certain terms. The most dominant type of classroom language used by students is greeting on using the term of “How are you”, the second one is the type of classroom language is register on using the term “who is absent today”. The last one is the type of time to begin on using the term “let’s start our lesson now.” The students never applied the other terms in their practice.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to identify the application of Peer Teaching in the subject of Teaching English for Young Learner (TEYL) and combined it with teaching media that suitable for the teaching material. Besides it also observed the dominance of teaching media that were used by students in TEYL. It is a qualitative method.The subject of the study is 6th semester students of English Department. The collecting data of the study are observation, interview, and documentation.The application of Peer teaching in the study are 1) making sure that peer teacher mastered the teaching material, 2) using system reward, 3) using positive reinforcement, 4) choosing the appropriate exercise, 5) using grouping strategy, 6) using role play of peer teaching, 7) forcing on feedback that was given by the lecturer. Then the dominant teaching media used in peer teaching is downloaded video from YOUTUBE. The reason was easier to get and it is also cheap.

Abstract

Non-English students need specific efforts to improve their English ability. Each student has a different effort in learning English. The research aims to find out the kinds of students’ efforts in improving their English ability and the dominant English skill practiced by the students. Besides, the level of students’ effort is also investigated in this research. The subjects of this research cover 35 students in the first semester of the Faculty Of Public Health. Qualitative method was used in this research by semi structured interviews as the primary tools of data collection. The result shows that students’ efforts to improve their English skills are varies. Students try to improve their ability in English aimed to the purpose of speaking or communication. The level students' efforts are categorized into the substantive effort.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the student’s English speech errors of STMIK Sinar Nusantara using psycho-linguistic approach. This study belongs to the qualitative descriptive research with 30 respondents selected by using simple random sampling. The data were collected by recording the students’ presentation. After that the data were analyzed by conducting observation and classification the errors found in the respondents’ speech using psycho-linguistic approach proposed by Clark and Clark. The result of the study showed that there were 336 (100%) speech errors found which were than classified into Silent Pause (34%), Filled Pause (13.7%), Repeats (9.2%), Retraced False Start 0.3%), Corrections (4.5%), Interjections (3.7%), Stutters (14%), dan Slip of Tongue (20.1%).

Abstract

The research design of this study is a descriptive qualitative design that on analyzing colloquial words on updates status of facebook from October until December 2020. The objective of the study generally is to find out some types of technical terms used to form colloquial words found on updates status of facebook. They are: Abbreviation, Clipping, Blending, Hypocorism, and Acronyms. Based on the data analysis, from eight types of technical terms presented, five types of technical terms are found by the researcher. The types are not found in the study such as Prefix, Suffix, and combination of Suffix and Prefix. The most frequently used in colloquial words on updates status are Abbreviation, Clipping, and Acronyms. In terms of sociolinguistics, all users of colloquial words in facebook are adult and from educational classes. There are only a few users of colloquial words using colloquial words.

Abstract

Educational institutions have implemented online distance learning and teaching since the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia around March 2020. This research was conducted to find the effectiveness and its factors of virtual learning on English speaking skills in the early of pandemic. This study was a descriptive qualitative. This research was conducted at STMIK Sinar Nusantara Surakarta in Central Java. The time of research was started from April until June 2020 and it was conducted for Second-semester students in the academic year of 2019/2020 with 50 students for the number of populations from Information System program. For the research findings, virtual learning was not effective in grammar and fluency aspects and it was less effective in accent and vocabulary aspects for second-semester students of Information System program. Some factors have occurred in those lack of effectiveness, such as, the limitation of time in presenting speaking skill, the inefficiency of lecturer in correcting the students’ accent directly, difficulties of students in understanding material, limitations of English students’ vocabularies, and tendency of students’ speaking presentation based on the textbook.

Abstract

This study aims to determine how to apply flashcards in teaching English vocabulary by young mothers in the Dawis PKK Desa Dua Belasan RT I RW III Jombor Kec. Bendosari Kab Sukoharjo. The problems in this study were examined by qualitative descriptive research because the results of the approach were explained by using words. This research was conducted in the village of Dua belasan Jombor Sukoharjo. Meanwhile, data collection techniques are observation and documentation. The use of flashcards to teach English can be done in three ways. Flashcards in the standard way, namely quickly changing flashcards in front of the children, then flashcards were combined with songs and lastly flashcards were combined with hide and seek games. There are two advantages of a flashcard, it is like a game and it can be combined by singing a song. Apart from that, there are two weaknesses of using the flashcard. Teachers must be creative and must find ways to integrate other media on an ongoing basis. Then, Children did not feel bored in learning English using flashcards.

Abstract

This study attempts to investigate the borrowing strategies used by Indonesian TV channels to translate words related to covid-19 pandemic displayed in the running texts along with their readability and acceptability. The research is a descriptive and qualitative in nature. The data were collected by note-taking, analysis, questionnaire of running texts and test techniques in the form of sentences containing borrowed words from source language (English) into target language (Indonesian). To know the types of borrowing strategies, the borrowed words and the language was analysed based on the writer’s borrowing classification. The parameter of readability was used to assess the readability of the borrowed words and the criteria of acceptability were applied to explain their acceptability. The research findings show that the most widely used strategy for borrowed words in the running texts of Indonesian TV channels is transliteration. In addition, most of the borrowed words they used are less readable and less acceptable

Abstract

The research is conducted in order to describe the types of code switching and code mixing K-Popers in the social media twitter. The purpose of this study is to get some information on the types of code mixing and code switching frequently used by K-Popers EXOL. The technique of collecting data is observation, documentation method, and questionnaire. The researcher used triangulation as technique of analyzing data. Source of the data are taken from Twitter written by K-Popers EXOL. The data of this data research are comments, videos and photo statements posted by EXOL in social media Twitter from February – June 2021. The research finding shows three types of switching codes, they are Inter-sentential switching, Intra-sentential switching and emblematic switching. The most dominated code switching is inter-sentential switching (24 data). And, two types of code mixing are intern code mixing and extern code mixing. The most dominated of code mixing is extern code mixing with 27 data from 41 total data. In this research, none of intern code mixing are found.
