Speaking is one of the most challenging skills in learning English. Many obstacles are faced when learning to speak, such as lack of motivation, fear of making mistakes, and lack of self-confidence. These problems are often found during the teaching and learning process in the classroom. A teacher is expected to continue innovating for exciting and fun learning methods and media to increase learning interest, motivation, confidence, and creativity in speaking. It is needed not only in the classroom but also in independent learning. This study aims to discover students' perception of the learning process for their speaking skills through using vlogs as a self-learning media and the effect of using vlogs on students' motivation, confidence and creativity. The researcher took the research object of the English Language Teaching Department students in UNU Purwokerto. The data were obtained by giving a speaking project as a vlog with a specific theme. Data collection was conducted by providing questionnaires and interviews to find out students' perceptions about the effect of using vlogs for the improvement of motivation, confidence and creativity and also observing the students' vlogs to find out the learning process of speaking from the aspect of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. Data analysis is qualitative descriptive with theories from Dulay and Fromkin (1982). This study found that based on students' perceptions, they agreed that using vlogs improved their motivation, confidence and creativity. Meanwhile, based on the observation, it was found that there were some pronunciation errors and grammar mistakes in the students' speaking, but they showed improvement in choosing vocabulary. Some students used a variety of vocabularies that were rarely used in the class.

Implementation of E-learning in EFL Context during COVID-19: Teachers' and Students' Views at One School Sri Wahyuningsih; Indah Kusumaningrum

The present study reports the implementation of e-learning in English language teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic at one of the private high schools in Indonesia viewed from teachers' and students' perspectives. Using a qualitative study, the data were garnered through semi-structured interviews with an English teacher, a principal who also teaches English, and students. The result reveals that both teachers and students have the same responses to e-learning practices. There were three stages in implementing e-learning: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. In terms of preparation, the English teacher designed lesson plans as a guideline for learning. In the implementation stage, the English teacher used learning materials from various sources, including textbooks, videos, articles, and other sources on the internet. On the other hand, students reported that English teaching and learning activities in e-learning classes were usually carried out through WhatsApp, Google Classroom, and Zoom meetings. Apart from the advantages of e-learning in English language teaching, some challenges in its practice include the difficulties of operating technical devices for specific teachers, the problems of controlling students during distance learning, etc. Finally, the study's findings promote integrating technology and encouraging teachers' professional development in English language teaching.

Bisexuality in Bohemian Rhapsody: A Queer Study Syabilla Maylya -; Mamik Tri Wedawati

This research was meant to describe the shape of sexuality in Bryan Singer's "Bohemian Rhapsody" (2018) by analyzing the main character from the Queer perspective. Bisexual is a term used to describe relationships of people both with the same sex and the opposite sex for a certain period, including being attracted to or having sexual activity. Bohemian Rhapsody discusses Queen's career journey by showcasing the lead singer as a highlight. Freddie struggles to live in a world of hedonism and stigma, preconceptions, and the erasure of Bisexuality as a social identity. It will answer how to construct binary desires and how society shapes them by applying theory from Butler's work "Gender Trouble." to fulfil this study; In this study, either textual or visual film analysis will be applied to the subsequent discussion. 1.) Determine forms of Bisexuality in Bohemian Rhapsody; 2.) Reveal Bisexuality towards the character interactions in Bohemian Rhapsody. Through this interpretation, bisexual visibility is frequently devalued and forced to join monosexism with similar terms such as gay and lesbian, resulting in the erasure of Bisexuality. This behaviour is predicated on the social and cultural stereotypes attached to "bisexual."

Examining Time Disruption on Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris Movie: Magical Realism Study Irma Puspita Devi

A good movie directed by Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris (2011), reached marvellous achievement by obtaining 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and massive audiences. This paper focuses on the time disruption shown by Gil Pender's magical journey in Midnight in Paris. It was based on the magical realism elements from the book Ordinary Enchantments Magical Realism and Remystification of Narrative by Wendy B. The aim is to analyze the time disruption caused by Gil Pender's actions and feelings in this movie. This study uses literary textual analysis and attempts to understand the plot and the content to gain the data. The data was collected by identifying the scene and examining the unseen condition of this movie. Time disruption happens between two eras and makes the disruption on time-stamps in this movie. Magical realism sees this as a usual matter. This study shows that the journey of Gil Pender causes and fixes the time stamps itself on Midnight in Paris (2011) movie directed by Woody Allen.

Flouting of Conversational Maxims Analysis of Characters and Social Contexts in “All The Bright Places” Movie Aulia Zahra Tasyarasita; Agus Hari Wibowo

This research is carried out to investigate the types of flouting of maxims and the strategies used by the characters that occur within the background of power and social distance contexts in "All The Bright Places" movie. Moreover, this research is also aimed to reveal the reasons behind the execution of the flouting of maxims. This research is employed qualitative research. The data source of this research is presented in the form of words, phrases, and sentences containing flouting of the maxims obtained from the characters' utterances in the movie. The data were analyzed using Grice's cooperative principle theory, Cutting's theory of strategies to flout the maxims, Leech's theory of illocutionary functions of politeness, and Brown and Levinson's theory of social context. The research findings concluded that four types of flouting maxims are found in the characters' utterances: flouting the maxim of quantity, flouting the maxim of quality, flouting the maxim of manner, and flouting the maxim of relevance. Only three reasons for flouting the maxims were found of four types: competitive, collaborative, and conflictive. The most frequently used flouting maxim is flouting the maxim of quality which is aligned with the competitive reason as the most commonly used reason to flout the maxim.

Negative Politeness Strategy on Expressive Act of Rosiana Silalahi Talk Show Nurul Aini nurul; Djatmika; Sumarlam; Diah Kristina

Rosi talk show was a conversation program that presented Indonesian politics with supporting and opposing government arguments. The objectives were to find expressive acts and to explain how expressive acts performed negative politeness in the Rosi talk show. The theories used politeness strategy by Brown and Levinson (1987) on negative politeness in expressive act by Searle (1975) by the moderator. This study used qualitative content analysis, and the location was YouTube Channel KompasTV. The data were the moderator utterances involving expressive acts representing negative politeness. This research was a purposive sampling technique focussing on three segments in ‘student’s demonstration and Ade Armando percussion’. The data collection technique was free to engage in conversation to transcribe data audio into written, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was used to know the moderator's politeness tendencies. This study used an interactive method by Miles&Huberman (1992) to conclude. The result showed 18 expressive acts with six sub-strategy of negative politeness. Then, seven expressive speech acts: thanking, apologising, blaming, praising, showing sympathy, and accusing. Next, the dominant moderators’ expressive act was blaming. While there are four sub-negative politeness strategies: indirect, making pessimism, minimising impositions, and apologising. The researcher found that negative politeness strategies were realised with expressive acts using suspecting to interact with pros participants.

The business world has overgrown, creating fierce competition among English course institutions in Indonesia. The marketing communication strategy becomes vital for these institutions in informing about the products and the brands to form market perceptions of the services offered and to build brand awareness. The success of a marketing communication strategy of a business can be measured by its brand awareness among the market audiences. English Café is an English course institution in Semarang City that has the concept of making a café a supporting tool and a convenient place for studying and practicing English. Our research aims to explore its marketing communication strategy and measure its brand awareness among the samples taken from Semarang citizens, including its students and others. The qualitative method is used in the analysis with a descriptive data presentation. The tools include observations, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The researcher found the data result, there were 43 respondents; 12 respondents recognized English Café as an English course institution in Semarang. It was called Top of Mind which had a percentage of 27.91%. They had built the Top of Mind level of brand awareness for English Café Semarang. The researcher found 22 respondents who recalled the English Café brand without the aid of recall when they needed the English Café course program. It was called Brand Recall which had a percentage of 51.17%. In the last finding, the researcher got 9 respondents who were unaware of the English Café brand as an English course institution in Semarang. It was called Unaware of Brand which had a percentage of 20.93%.

Complaint as an Act: (Complaint Analysis in Twilight Novel) Hetty Catur Ellyawati

Complaint as a communicative act can be divided into two categories. First, as a face threatening act when it is uttered directly, second, it becomes a politeness when it uses indirectness. This research is explanatory research which tries to explain why complaint can have many different strategies. For data collection, the writer used purposive sampling taken from Twilight novel written by Stephani Meyer, but the writer chose Bahasa Indonesia version. While for analyzing the data, the writer used substitution method with social context consideration. From the data analysis, it is found that complaint is always a face threatening act when it is used directly.

The Analysis of Implicature in the Presidential Election Campaign 2019 on Online Billboard Advertisement Widyashanti Kunthara Anindita

This study aims to describe and explain 1) The implicatures on the utterances of 2019 Presidential election campaign on online billboard advertisements (2) The types of implicatures on the utterances of 2019 Presidential election campaign on online billboard advertisements (3) The function of those implicatures. The research method in this study is a qualitative approach that uses content analysis. This is intended to trace three formulation of problems related to the conversational implicature. Data is the utterances containing implicatures and data is taken from 2019 presidential election campaign on online billboard advertisements. The results of the discussion showed that out of 11 online billboards, most speakers flouted Quality maxim as much as 6 online billboard advertisements and the speakers also flouted Quantity maxim as much as 3 online billboards advertisements. The rest, 1 online billboard advertisement includes the flouting of manner maxim and 1 online billboard advertisement includes the flouting of Relation maxim. The types of implicatures that occur are generalized implicatures and particularized implicatures. Implicature in this study has 2 functions, namely directive (asking, inviting and convincing) and commissive (promising).

Error Analysis on EFL Learners’ Analytical Exposition Writing Aprilista Dwi Permatasari; Testiana Deni Wijayatiningsih; Dodi Mulyadi

This research was aimed to find out the errors that occur in writing analytical exposition text which are made by students in XI grade of SMA N 15 Semarang. The data were taken from the students' writing product. All data concerning grammatical errors were analyzed by using Ellis' theory. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The results of this research showed that there were three kinds of errors made by the students. First, omission is leaving out an item that is required for an utterance to be considered grammatically. Second, misinformation is using one grammatical form in place of another grammatical form. Lastly, misordering is putting the words in an utterance in the wrong order. This research was expected to give understanding about grammatical errors in writing analytical exposition text so it can help students in writing English text well.
