This study aims to design Screencast O Matic as media of writing descriptive text for grade eighth students in Junior High School. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing the data, designing new writing media, validating to experts, revising writing media, and final product. The subject of this research was grade eighth students at SMP Negeri 27 Medan. The instruments used for collecting the data were interview and questionnaire. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs in learning descriptive text. The writing media have been validated by two experts, English teacher and English lecturer. The average score from English teacher and English lecturer was 90,4% so it was categorized as Very Good. It means the developing Screencast O Matic as media of writing descriptive text is appropriate for grade eighth students in Junior High School. The objective of this research was to develop the appropriate English speaking worksheet based on scientific approach for grade X of Senior High School students. This research belongs to Research and Development (R&D) study through seven phases; gathering information and data, analyzing the data, writing the course grid, writing the first draft, getting the experts’ judgement, revising the worksheet and writing the final draft. The subject of this research were 42 students of grade X Senior High School Teladan Medan. There were two questionnaires employed[1] in this research: (1) need analysis questionnaire which distributed to the students and (2) worksheet evaluation questionnaire which distributed to the worksheet experts to evaluate the speaking worksheet. The data obtained from the need analysis questionnaire were analyzed using frequency and percentage, while the data from evaluation questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistic. This research developed six units of speaking worksheet. The speaking worksheet for grade X students of Senior High School Teladan Medan consists of Observing, Questioning, Exploring, Associating and Communicating stages. Based on the experts’ judgement of the content, the language, the presentation and the graphic, the develop speaking worksheet is appropriate to be used for grade X students’ of Senior High School Teladan Medan. The mean score of all aspects was 4.68 and chategorized as “very good” since the range was in interval 4.5.<X ≤ 5. Keywords : Research and Development (R&D), Speaking Worksheet, Scientific Approach

The objective of this study was to develop the speaking materials in Showing Care and Congratulation for the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The study was educational Research and Development (R & D). The data were gathered by distributing questionnaires to 30 students of SMA Negeri 20 Medan and administering interviews to the teacher. The result of the study was a set of developed teaching speaking materials based on CTL entitled “Meet and Speak” Which consists of two chapters on the topic of (1) Don’t be Sad My Friend and (2) Good Job. This study was about the theme, rheme and thematic progression of students‟ recount text of the eight grade at SMP RK Budi Mulia Pematangsiantar. The aim of this study were (1) to investigate thematic progression pattern used (2) to find out the reason why the students used thematic progression in the way they did. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study were clauses of students‟ recount text. The instrument of collecting data was elicitation technique and interview. The data were analyzed by using interactive model technique of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The result of this study were the following, (1) There were two patterns of thematic progression used in students‟ recount text, they were Theme Reteration/Constant Theme Pattern (TR/CTP), and Zig-zag/Linear Theme Pattern (Zig-zag/LTP). (2) The reason in use of thematic progression by students, they were: (a) the student‟s lack of knowledge about use of the thematic progression, (b) they also less interested in writing, (c) the students got resources from reading material and (d) the students got resources from english teacher‟s explanation.Keywords: Theme, Rheme, Thematic Progression, Recount Text

This research was aimed to develop suitable English reading materials for the eleventh grade students of Maritime Department of SMK Pelayaran Samudera Indonesia. Due to the result of this research was in the form of a product, this research was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) which adapted Borg and Gall (2003) theory with some modifications. The subjects of this research were the eleventh grade students of Maritime Department of SMK Pelayaran Samudera Indonesia. In conducting this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis, designing the first draft of materials, validating by the expert, revising the materials, and producing the final product. The instruments of collecting the data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The interview was analyzed as qualitative data and the questionnaires were analyzed as quantitative data. These data were the needs of students which covered target needs and learning needs. This research only focused on developing two genres of English reading materials based on KTSP that were taught in the second semester which were procedure and analytical exposition. This study was about IRF (Initiation-Response-Feedback) On Classroom Interaction For Computer Students in SMK 1 Yapim Medan. The aim of this study were to state clearly the objectives of the study in relation of the problems posed. The objective was to describe how the pattern of IRF in the classroom interaction for computer students. This research used qualitative research. The data were collected in three ways by observing by video recording, interviewing and questionnaire. The data was analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard theory (1975). The result of this study were the following (1) The language used by the teacher and the students in the classroom interaction was not balance. Both teacher and students used bahasa for 70% and the rest 30% for English. (2) There was the lowest pattern responded by student. It had 20% responses given to the students because the students made many mistakes in pronouncing some words when they read the text. The teacher feedback was the dominat pattern in the classroom interaction rather than initiation. It is suggested to English teacher especially for English teacher who is teaching computer students to improve students English by by having practice and supporting them to be brave to speak English. This study aimed at identifying the needs of grade eight students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan in learning reading English using website and concerns on how web-based reading learning materials are developed for grade VIII students of junior high school. The nature of this study is Research and Development (R & D). The steps were conducting the needs analysis, writing the course grid, storyboarding, writing the first draft, obtaining the experts’ judgments, revising the first draft, and finally writing the final draft. This study involved 32 students of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan as the research subjects. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaires (needs analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaires). The results of the needs analysis questionnaire were analyzed using percentage and the expert judgment were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data got from the result of need analysis was being the basis in developing the product. The website was divided into five pages: Home, Start Up, Your Focus, Your Activity, and Grammar Corner. Then, based on the expert judgment, the website are appropriate for the grade eight students of junior high school. It was proved by the mean value of 4.2 for web based materials which cover the appropriateness of content, language, and presentation, and 4.5 for the website.Key words: Research and Development (R&D), Website, Reading Materials, Junior High School

This research was aimed to develop appropriate, interesting and attractive speaking media in teaching descriptive text for seventh grade students of MTsS UMMI Lubuk Pakam. Due to the result in the form of product, this study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (1989) theory with some modifications. The subject of this study was the seventh grade students of MTsS UMMI Lubuk Pakam. In conducting this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis, designing the first draft of media, revising the media, and producing the final product as the meme comic. The instruments of collecting data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The interview result was analyzed as qualitative data and the questionnaires analyzed as quantitative data. These data were needs of students covering target needs and learning needs. This study developed speaking media which only focused on descriptive text taught in the odd semester. These media was based on Curriculum 2013. This research aimed to find out the target and learning needs of Grade X SMA SWASTA MARISI MEDAN. Moreover, it had a goal to develop English materials for learning writing skills. This is a research and development (R&D) study. The subjects of this research were 25 students of Grade X SMA SWASTA MARISI MEDAN. The need analysis data were collected by using questionnaires and an interview. Then, the results of questionnaires were calculated through percentage. Thus, the highest percentage was considered as the needs of students. Meanwhile, the results of expert judgment were analyzed in the form of descriptive statistics. Three units of materials were developed in this research. Each unit consists of introduction, main lesson and reinforcement. These materials used Project-Based Learning as the approach in learning writing skill. The units covered some tasks as identify the generic structure, write a short paragraph and complete the sentences. Mostly, the themes used represented students’ knowledge about the popular places and person around them. According to the results of the expert judgment, the materials were very relevant to be used for Grade X SMA SWASTA MARISI MEDAN. Keywords: learning writing, writing, descriptive text
