Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop suitable procedure text materials for reading skill, for Beauty program students. It was found that procedure text materials provided in the students’ textbook were not suitable to the needs and interests of Beauty program students. This research was conducted based on educational research and development (R&D) through six steps, namely: gathering data, analyzing data, developing procedure text materials, validating procedure text materials, revising procedure text materials and final product. There are some instruments that were applied in this research namely questionnaire and interview .The subject of this study was XI Grade of Beauty program. Based on the needs analysis conducted there were 4 procedure texts related to Beauty program developed. The researcher developed the text by selecting and adapting relevant procedure texts related to Beauty program from internet and book as the sources. Then, the selected texts were adapted based on the principles of materials development in order to present well organized suitable procedure text materials. These developed procedure text materials had been validated by two experts and the average score gotten is 4.07. It is categorized “Good” since the mean is within the interval 3.40 < ≤ 4.19. It means that the developed procedure text materials for reading skill are suitable for the eleventh grade students of Beauty program. Key words: research and development (R&D), procedure text, Beauty program

Abstract

This study deals with the improvement of students’ writing achievement through focus group discussion method. The objective of this study is to find out whether students’ writing achievement will be improved through focus group discussion method. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was class VIII-4 SMPN. 2 Tanjung Pura. The number of the students was 36 students which consist of 18 male students and 18 female students. The research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted three meetings. The instrument for collecting the data were quantitative data (writing test ) and qualitative data ( observation sheet, interview and field note). Based on the analysis, students’ achievement kept improving in every test. Key Words : Writing, Recount, Focus Group Discussion

Abstract

This study was about skills of teacher’s questioning in English classroom interaction. It was aimed to investigate skills of teacher’s questioning used by the English teacher in classroom interaction. The participant of this research was English teacher of SMA Negeri 1 Kuala. The technique of data collection used was observation, video recording, field note and interview. The research finding showed that there are 9 skills that used by the English teacher i.e. structuring, phrasing, redirecting, distributing, pausing, reacting, prompting and changing the level of cognitive demand. Distributing questions were the most dominantly used by the English teacher with 39%.  Redirecting 21%, reacting 13%, pausing 8%, focusing 7%, structuring 4%, changing the level of cognitive demand 4%, phrasing 3% and prompting 1%. Moreover, there were six reasons why teacher ask question in English classroom interaction, they were stimulate and maintain student’s interest, encourage students to think and focus on the content of the lesson, enable teacher to clarify what student has said, enable teacher to elicit particular structures and vocabulary items, enable teacher to check students’ understanding, and encourage students’ participation in a lesson. Related suggestions are given to the English teacher on how to achieve better questions. Abstract

This study aims to find out whether students’ achievement taught by using Think Pair Share   Technique has significant effect than taught Dictation Technique in Speaking. The research was conducted by Experimental research using in two groups. They are experimental used Think Pair Share Technique and Control used Dictation Technique. The subject of this were the students of SMAN 6 Medan class X-2 and X-3 consisted of 38 students for each class. The data was taken from Speaking test. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of t-obs was 3.982 with degree of freedom (df) 38  at the level of significance p (0.05) = 2.024. It means that t-obs is higher than t-table. It was found that students achievement in Speaking taught by Think Pair Share Technique has significant effect than Dictation Technique. Keywords : Think Pair Share, Speaking Achievement, Dictation

Abstract

In regard to the need for reading comprehension ability in the school, the objective of this research is to identify: (1) the difficulties faced by tenth grade students of Vocational High School in reading comprehension and (2) the factors influencing students’ reading comprehension difficulties. This research used both questionnaire and interview as the instruments of data collection. The data was analyzed based on the theory of Nuttal (1982) which reducing it by categorizing the relevant data. The participants of this study were tenth grade students of a Vocational High School in Medan. In doing this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, reducing data, and drawing conclusion. The result of the research showed that: (1) most of the students have difficulties in determining main idea, locating reference, understanding vocabulary, and making inference and (2) the factors influencing their difficulties were limited vocabulary knowledge, lack of fluency, lack of familiarity of the subject matter, and the problems in recalling after reading. The result of this research is expected to be beneficial for English teachers to identify their students’ difficulties in reading comprehension in order to have innovation or appropriate strategies in teaching reading and this research also can be useful for the students to be able to know their difficulties in reading skill.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were (1) to analyze feasibility of content (2) to analyze feasibility of presentation in the English Textbook “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK Kelas X” according to Curriculum 2013. This study used descriptive qualitative. The data collected for this study were from “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK Kelas X” published by Yrama Widya with the writer Otong Setiawan Dj. There are 12 chapters within this textbook and the writer determined to study 6 out of 12 chapters as the sample for the whole book. The results of this study were (1) the feasibility of content in English Textbook “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK Kelas X” according to Curriculum 2013 with percentage 89.58%. (2) the feasibility of Presentation in English Textbook “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA/SMK Kelas X” according to Curriculum 2013 with percentage 88.88%. (3) KD and KI in this textbook also according to Curriculum 2013.Therefore, it can be concluded that English Textbook “Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA-MA/SMK Kelas X” published by Yrama Widya, in terms of feasibility of content and feasibility of presentation, was good to be used in the first grade of senior high school using curriculum 2013.Keywords: Textbook, Curriculum 2013, Assessment rubric based on BSNP

Abstract

This study focused on investigating the reason and analysing the process the use of translation in teaching reading descriptive text for tenth grade students at SMK Swasta Imelda Medan and SMK Swasta Jambi Medan. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken one English teacher of SMK Swasta Imelda Medan and two teachers of SMK Swasta Jambi Medan. The data were collecting by using video-recording, interviewing and observing the whole process of teaching reading descriptive text. The findings showed that the reasons of using translation in teaching reading descriptive text were facilitating communication, facilitating teacher student relationship and facilitating the learning of L2. In the process of using translation, there were 16 times of using translation found during three processes that they were conveying and checking meaning of words or sentences, explaining grammar and classroom management. It also found that the use of translation was used in the scientific approach activity that observing and questiong were the dominant used of using translation. The findings of the study revealed translation contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching reading skill.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop Video Blog as Teaching Media for Students of Multimedia Programme. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D).Instruments for collecting data were syllabus, questionnaire and interview. The data was gathered by administering interview to the teacher and distributing questionnaires to the students. The result of this study was developed Video Blog   which contained explanation, students’ activities and the example of report text in spoken.The average scores of media’s assesment were 4.04 from English teacher and 4.56 from English lecturer. It means the developed Video Blog as Teaching Media were categorized as very good or very appropriate for students of Multimedia Programme.  Key words: Report text, Research and Development (R&D), Report Text

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to investigate the use of Three Fold of role play significantly affected students’ speaking competence. This study was conducted by using experimental design. The population was all students of grade XI of SMA PAB 8 SAENTIS with the total number of the students was 120 students. There were 60 students taken as the sample by using cluster random sampling. The students were divided into two groups namely  experimental and control groups. The experimental group was taught by using three fold model of role play while the control group was taught without using three fold of role play. The instrument for collecting data was in the form of oral test. The mean score of post test in experimental group (68,13) is higher than the control group (59,1). The score of experimental group showed that the students’ achievement increases significantly. Dealing the data above, it was found that the use of three fold model of role play affects students’ competence on speaking.   Keywords: three fold model, role play, narrative text, speaking

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the needs of grade eight students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan in learning reading English using website and concerns on how web-based reading learning materials are developed for grade VIII students of junior high school.  The nature of this study is Research and Development (R & D). The steps were conducting the needs analysis, writing the course grid, storyboarding, writing the first draft, obtaining the experts’ judgments, revising the first draft, and finally writing the final draft. This study involved 32 students of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan as the research subjects. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaires (needs analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaires). The results of the needs analysis questionnaire were analyzed using percentage and the expert judgment were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data got from the result of need analysis was being the basis in developing the product. The website was divided into five pages: Home, Start Up, Your Focus, Your Activity, and Grammar Corner. Then, based on the expert judgment, the website are appropriate for the grade eight students of junior high school. It was proved by the mean value of 4.2 for web based materials which cover the appropriateness of content, language, and presentation, and 4.5 for the website.Key words: Research and Development (R&D), Website, Reading Materials, Junior High School
