Abstract

This research was aimed to develop domino cards as the students’ vocabulary media in leaning notice for grade 7 students of SMP Negeri 1 Sidikalang. This study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (2003). The method through six phases: conducting need analysis, designing, developing, experts validating, revising, and implementing. The subjects of this research were 32 students of grade seventh of SMPN 1Sidikalang which was located in Jl. Diponegoro No. 1 Sidikalang. The data and data resources were the teacher’s lesson plan, teacher’s interview, and students’ questionnaires result. After getting the last data, the media should be planned to be designed as the students’ needs. The media were developed and had been validated by the experts. The percentages of the media from the experts were 90% that categorized as very good. It can be concluded that domino cards gave many benefits for the students, such as improve their vocabulary, made them enjoy studying English, get easier in learning notice after using needed media. Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out what the English listening materials are appropriate for students in tourism major. Indonesia has many spots for tourism then it makes government to improve the students’ ability in tourism major. Since the students need to communicate with other people especially tourist then it needs to improve listening skill. Because basically listening is a skill of English that consists of receiving, constructing, and responding to verbal or nonverbal massage. In fact, the finding of materials that provided for the Grade X students of Tourism major at SMK Negeri 7 Medan that listening materials provided in the textbook are not related to the students’ major. Then it is needed to develop the English listening materials for the tenth grade of tourism major. The research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) method. The subject of this research was 2016/2017 students of the tenth grade of tourism major in SMK Negeri 7 Medan. The number of the students was 26 students. The data of this study were collected by using need analysis questionnaire, and interview. It was found that 61.90% of the respondents assumed that existing listening materials are not related to their major, and 93.75% expected major-related English listening materials. The experts’ validation shows that the developed listening materials are appropriate and recommended to be used. At the end of this study, teachers are expected to be able to see the students’ needs and can prepare even develop the materials in order to meet students’ needs and job. Key words: Research and Development, English listening materials, Tourism

Abstract

This research was dealt with teaching techniques used by teachers in teaching writing descriptive text. The objective of this study were (1) to analize the teaching techniques used by teachers in teaching writing descriptive text to students at SMK Telkom Medan and (2) to find out  the reasons of doing that way in the process of teaching writing descriptive text to students. The subject of the study was the teachers of SMK Telkom Medan. A descriptive qualitative design was used in this study.  The data were collected by recording the utterances of teacher. The data were analyzed by data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing/verification. There were three types of teaching techniques used by teachers in teaching writing descriptive text namely Collaborative Writing Technique, Graphic Organizer Technique, and Cubing Technique. Based on the result, it may be concluded that : (1) from three techniques above 50% teacher used collaborative writing technique, 50% teacher used graphic organizer technique and there was no teachers using cubing technique in SMK Telkom Medan. (2) For the reasons of doing that way in process of teaching writing descriptive text to students. There were two reasons, building team work and helping critical thinking.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate whether Numbered Heads Together Technique significantly affected on students’ achievement in reading recount text. This study was an experimental research design. The population of this study was grade X students of SMA Swasta Teladan Medan with the total number of students was 60 as samples and all of the students was taken by using random sampling. The students were divided into two groups, namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using Numbered Heads Together Technique, while the control group was taught by using Lecturing Method. The instrument of collecting data was multiple choice tests which then divided into pre-test and post-test. To obtain the result of the reliability of the test, the researcher used the Kuder Richardson formula (KR-21). The result of the calculation showed that the reliability of the test was 0.64, which means that the reliability of the test is high. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that tvalue is higher than ttable (5.50 > 2.00) at the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58. It means that there is a significant effect of using Numbered Heads Together Technique on the students’ achievement in reading recount text.   Keyword: Numbered Heads Together Technique, Reading Achievement.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe and to explain teacher’s Oral Feedback toward students’ response in speaking skill at SMKS Eria Medan. The subject were the students of SMKS Eria Medan from eleventh grade. The types of oral feedback such as positive feedback praise, corrective feedback, recast feedback, explicit correction feedback, elicitation feedback, metalinguistic feedback, repetition feedback and clarification request feedback. The types of feedback that given by the English teacher such as: praise feedback, recast feedback, repetition feedback and metalinguistics (elicitation).There were five reasons why the teacher using the oral feedback: It gives both the teacher and the students information, appreciate the students, it providing direction to students, it providing language input to students, it encouraged students to learn, it encouraged students to be selfsufficient. Teacher might need to apply and know the types of feedback that are appropriate to improve students’ achievement in learning English. However, not all teachers are aware of what type of feedback they use in their classroom and preferred by their students to improve the students English language achievement. The result of the research showed that the English teacher mostly used the directly feedback when give feedback to the students. The researcher used observation and interview for collecting the data.

Abstract

This study investigated teacher’s strategies in teaching reading comprehension of analyticalexposition text. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. Therespondents of this research were one English teacher and nineteen students of XI IPS 2 class inSMA Negeri 1 Bangun Purba. The instrument for collecting the data was a video recorder andquestionnaire dissemination. The teacher was observed and recorded when applied teachingstrategies in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text. Meanwhile, the students had tofill the questionnaire to state their problems towards the teacher’s strategies in teaching readingcomprehension of analytical exposition text. The result indicated that the teacher implied generalmethods such as introducing text, setting the reading purpose, skimming the text, translating thetext, answering question and identifying answer. Meanwhile, the most difficult strategyaccording to the students was skimming text. There were 11 of 19 students who stated thatskimming text was difficult since they did not possess good vocabulary mastery. The leastdifficult strategy was identifying answer. Based on the data, teacher might need to improve thestrategies to overcome students’ problems in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text

Abstract

This study was focused on the improvement of Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition through the application of collaborative writing strategy. The objective of this study was to find out whether collaborative writing strategy could improve Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition text. The study was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subjects of this study were students of Grade XI Class 2 of State Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri: SMAN) 4 Pematangsiantar consisting of 32 students. The study was implemented in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of data collection consisted of quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were taken from students’ written test and the qualitative data were taken from the interview, diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire. Based on the analytical exposition writing result, students’ score was 57.9. In the test of Cycle I, the mean score was 67, and in the test of Cycle II was 78.3. Based on the observation sheet, it was found that the teaching-learning process well done. The students were active and curious in writing. In line with the data, it was found that collaborative writing strategy can improve Grade XI students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition text. Abstract

Teacher’s questions play an important role in the classroom interaction. This study was conducted to investigate the levels of question that English teacher used while teaching narrative text. The subject of this study was an English teacher of SMA Gajah Mada. The data were collected by observing and recording while the teacher was teaching in two different meetings and also by interviewing the teacher. The research design of this study was qualitative research. The study reveals that the total number of the question was 63 questions that asked by the teacher. There were Low Cognitive Questions (LCQ); 48 (76%) remembering questions, 13 (21%) understanding questions, 0 (0%) applying questions and High Cognitive Question (HCQ); 0 (0%) analyzing questions; 2 (3%) evaluating questions, and 0 (0%) creating questions. Abstract

This study is aimed at improving the second grade of students’ speakingachievement by using Community Language Learning (CLL) Method. Theresearch was conducted by applying classroom action research. The subject of this study was second grade of Private Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Swasta) of Dwi Tunggal Tanjung Morawa which consisted of 31 students. To collect the data, the instruments used were primary data (SpeakingTest) and secondary data (interview sheet, observation sheet, field notes). It can be seen from the score in test I, test II and test III. In the Test I, the mean of the students’score was (64.77), in the Test II was (71.35), and the mean of the students’ score of the Test III was (80.90). Based on the interview, and observation sheet, it shows that the expression and excitement of the students got improved as well. It was found that teaching of speaking by using Community Language Learningcould significantly improve students’ speaking achievement.Key Words: Community Language Learning, Method, Improvement, Speaking Achievement

Abstract

The objectives of this research is to develop appropriate reading materials for grade X by using scientific approach as learning material referring to Curriculum 2013. The method used in this research is research and development (R&D). This study is adapted the R&D model proposed by Jolly & Bolitho in Tomlinson (1998). The steps of this study were conducting needs analysis, developing the course grid, developing the first draft of the materials, validating materials, and revising the materials. The subjects of this research were the students of Industrial Electronics Engineering  department grade X of SMKS Nasional Sidikalang and workers of PT. Alam Daya Makmur. Three types of questionnaires were used to collect the data. The first questionnaire was made to obtain the data for the target situation and necessities, the second questionnaire was made to obtain the data for lacks and wants, and the third questionnaire was used to obtain the data about the appropriateness of the materials. The data of all questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively through descriptive statistics. The average score of the products is 3.58 which is in the range of 3.50<x<4.00 and can be categorized as Very Good.
