Abstract

The purpose of this research is to establish macromedia Flash as an English teaching medium for tenth grade students at SMA Azizi Medan.This research was carried out in six stages using Research and Development (R&D) design: obtaining data and information, analyzing data, designing media, validating by experts, amending, and delivering the final result.The research focused on SMA Azizi Medan's grade X.The information was acquired by interviewing an English teacher and sending a questionnaire to 30 students to determine their needs.The results of the interview and questionnaire revealed that students require a learning medium for teaching speaking that will assist them in comprehending the narrative text.Experts have supported macromedia flash as a learning media. The average score is 4.55. It means the developed learning media by using macromedia flash is relevant or appropriate and categorized as a very good learning media for students at SMA Azizi Medan.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating the effect of rich media guided writing strategy on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The Population of this research was the tenth (X) grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Dolok Merawan. There were two classes as the sample. The first class (X MIA 1), the experimental group consisted of 20 students, and the second class (X IS 1), the control group consisted of 20 students. The experimental group was taught by using rich media-guided writing strategy while control group was taught by using pen and paper-guided writing strategy. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the score of students in the experimental group by using rich media guided writing strategy was higher than the score of students in the control group by using pen and paper guided writing strategy, at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 38, the t-observed was 2,818 while the t-table was 2,024. Therefore, the application of rich media guided writing strategy significantly affected the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. Keywords: Rich Media-Guided Writing Strategy, Writing Descriptive Text.

Abstract

The study deals with the aspects of political dystopia in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. The objective of study is to describe the aspects of political dystopia occur in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. The data were analyzed by identifying the statements found in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. The findings show that there are five aspects of political dystopia occur in the novel. The five aspects are: a) Totalitarian Government, b) Political Repression, c) Dehumanization, d) Restrictions of Freedom, e) Oppression which Led to the Rebellion. From those aspects, it is concluded that political dystopia occur in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. Keyword        : prose, novel, science fiction, political dystopia

Abstract

This study was a descriptive qualitative research. It aimed to describe the content validity of the English summative test items for the tenth grade students at SMK Imelda Medan. This study used documentary analysis in collecting the data. The data of this research were the English summative test items for the odd semester of the tenth grade students made by the English teacher at SMK Imelda Medan in academic year of 2018/2019. The English summative items were classified into five categorizations: interpersonal conversation, transactional conversation, short functional texts, genre, and grammar. Based on the analysis of data, 22 out of 30 English summative test items for the tenth grade students were suitable to the syllabus (73%) with the most dominant topic about transactional conversation (10 items while there were 10 out of 30 items were irrelevant (27%) to the syllabus because the items discuss about the topics that are not irrelevant to the syllabus. Keywords: Summative Test, Content Validity, and Syllabus

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the distribution of cognitive level of Bloom’s Taxonomy in English Summative Test items for reading comprehension in odd and even semesters of second year students in SMAN 1 in Tebing Syahbandar academic year 2015/2016. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research for collect, analyze and classify reading questions based on revised of Bloom’s Taxonomy. The data of this study were taken from English Summative Test for eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Tebing Syahbandar. The results of this study are: for odd semester C1 (69.23%), C2 (15.38%), C3 (7.69%), C4 (7.69%), C5 (0%) and C6 (0%); and for even semester C1 (38.89%), C2 (5.56%), C3 (0%), C4 (55.56%), C5 (0%) and C6 (0%). Adapted by Sudjana (2009), these results do not achieve proportion of thinking order skill that the total of C1 and C2 is 30%, C2 and C3 is 40%, C4 and C5 is 30%. It shows that the distribution of cognitive level of Bloom’s Taxonomy in English Summative Test items for reading comprehension in odd and even semesters of second year students in SMAN 1 in Tebing Syahbandar academic year 2015/2016 are not appropriate.Key words: English summative test, reading comprehension questions, revised Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the reading questions quality in an English worksheet for grade XI of Vocational High School based on Revised Bloom’s taxonomy. This study is conducted by descriptive method, with qualitative as well as quantitative area. The subject of this study is reading questions which are taken from English worksheet for grade XI published by Surya Grafika Mandiri. Since this study uses observation method, the instruments of collecting data is by using checklist. The result of the checklist was analyzed both as qualitative and quantitative data. These data are the reading questions in English worksheet based on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The final result was the quality of reading questions categorized into each types of cognitive domain of Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop Picture Series as a media for teaching writing procedure text at the third year students of Pahlawan Nasional Junior High School. The researcher used Research and Development (R &D) method through ten steps: observing, evaluating need analysis, developing first media, validating with experts, revising it, testing in small group, revising, testing in large group, revising, producing final product. The subjects of this research were 30 students from IX-1 class, and 34 students from IX-2 class. The instrument of collecting data was using questionnaires. The data were analyzed by descriptive text technique. The result of the product from two validators – an English lecturer from State University of Medan and an English teacher from Pahlawan Nasional Junior High School, was in scale of 4 which was in good quality. And the result from all of the students was in scale of 4 which was in good quality too. It means that the developed product/Picture Series is eligible to be used for teaching writing procedure text for the third year students in Pahlawan Nasional Junior High School. Keywords: Research and Development (R & D), writing procedure text, picture series

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the use of video and analyze the reasons ofusing video in teaching and learning process especially in writing descriptive textfor tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat. This study was qualitativelyconducted that taken two english teachers of SMA Negeri 1 Stabat. The data werecollected by using recording, depth interview and observing the whole processesof teaching writing descriptive text. The findings of this study showed that theteacher 1 only used four ways from seven ways while the teacher 2 only usedthree ways from seven ways. The researcher used Berk theory in analyzing theteachers’ ways in using video in teaching descriptive text. There were reasons ofusing video in teaching and learning process that had gotten from teachers’interview. Then based on the data, the reasons dominantly were see and also hearthe language in use, be more active, creative, attractive, motivated, enjoyable, andthe important things by the video the student could master the material in goodenough. The findings of this study revealed that video contributed to the study offoreign language teaching especially teaching writing.

Abstract

This study attempts to improve students’ writing achievement in recount text through Think-Pair-Share Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VIII-1 SMPN 1 Pematangsiantar. The number of the students was 32 students, consisted of 5 males and twenty seven females. The research was conducted in two cycles and consisted of six meetings. The instruments for collecting data were writing tests as the quantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet, interview sheet and questionnaire sheet as qualitative data. Based on the writing score, students’ scores kept improving in every test. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the first test as a pre-test was 57.84, for the second test as a post test I was 73.56, for the third test as a post test II was 77.56. Based on diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that students were actively involved in writing process. The result of the research showed that Think-Pair-Share Strategy can improve students’ achievement in writing recount text.   Keywords: Think Pair Share, Writing, Recount text, Action research

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop students worksheet for reading comprehension of descriptive text using Kahoot! for tenth grade students at SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan. This study was categorized as Research and Development (R&D) through six stages: gathering data and information, conducting need analysis, designing first form of media, validating by experts, revising media and final product. The subject of the study was the tenth grade students of SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan with the instruments of collecting data were interview and questionnaires. The result of the study was platform Kahoot! to be used as stusents worksheet for reading comprehension of descriptive text. In the percentage form, the average score of experts’ validation in term of content aspect was 94.2%, presentation aspect was 94%, language aspect was 97% and graphic aspect was 100%. These scores were categorized “Very Good”.  It means the developing students worksheet for reading comprehension by using Kahoot! was appropriate for tenth grade students of SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan.Keywords: Descriptive text, students worksheet, Kahoot!
