Abstract

The development of capitalism idea during the colonial prior to the New Order periods need a broader understanding of an historical analysis of popular credit case in Yogyakarta 1912-1990. The establishment of bank in Yogyakarta was already accomplished in the sense that it was owned and managed by state and it sell a large proportion of credit products on the open of financial system in villages. Using the historical critical method, this research seems to be the most appropriate for obtaining meaningful information on descriptions, dynamics, changes and tendencies of the  functional relationship between credit systems, state authority and the process of economic transformation in the region of Yogyakarta. Designing with the capitalism system, government credit system was not able to increase a village economy position in Yogyakarta. Popular Credit in the years of 1912-1990 as this research mentioned, is far from what villagers need. Banking system, in practices, was designed to create and produce a subsisten economy. The dual economy experiences of popular credit in Yogyakarta historically had given the state to be the hegemony holder. Popular credit is no more or less as the construct of economic boundaries under the concept of colonialism

Abstract

The present study investigates the use of hedges (vague language) as the meaning-making practice in the gossip column of the Jakarta Post. The daily newspaper is chosen due to pragmatic purposes, accessibility, and its national coverage. Adapting the framework of Lakoff (1973), Holmes (1990) and Hyland (1996a-b), this study focuses on the hedges’ functions and meanings in a gossip column (informal context), apart from an academic discourse (formal context) in which hedges are frequently discussed. This possibly leads to the diverse functions and meanings of the hedges’ occurrences within the discourse: through the employment of ‘epistemic modal’ (the expression of uncertainty) and ‘affective’ (the expression of solidarity) function. Further, the mostly-found hedges are the epistemic modal ‘about’ (five times) and the affective modal ‘think’ (four times) from six hedge categories. Eventually, it is also revealed that hedges used in the gossip column are to enhance the self-image and trend-setting identity of the celebrities, who indeed are involved in the discourse.

Abstract

Studies on Sêrat Darmasunya are conductedthrough literary and philological research. This is because both types of the studies cannot be absolutely separated. Sêrat Darmasunya is a holistic structure. Every element with a particular situation does not have a meaning in itself but, rather, the meaning is determined by its relationships with the other elements involved. A full meaning can be comprehended only if this element is integrated into the structure that is the overall elements. As a macapat song or a Javanese poetry, Sêrat Darmasunya should be understood by paying attention to the relationships between its elements as a part of the whole structure. The structure of Sêrat Darmasunya should be analyzed based on the constituent elements of a poetry. These elements comprise intrinsic and extrinsic elements. Then, the critical edition of Serat Darmasunya was then analyzed through the approach of Intertextual-transformation theory. Sêrat Darmasunya provides information that between the manuscript and the text under study have similar contents. Although written with different metrum and in different languages, there are similarities in both explicit and implied meaning. Cultural environment shaped the mindset of the authors, whocame from the same environment that was the acculturation environment between Hindu and Javanese culture

Abstract

Abstract

Greetings are one of the tangible proofs of human communications. One greets someone else because of the need to communicate. In this communication, the relationship between the two people communicating influences the choice of greeting forms. The selection of a greeting is assumed to be closely related to the language attitudes and perspectives of the speaker in positioning himself against the hearer. During its development, the use of greetings has shown a quite interesting dynamics. This comprises the development of greeting use, shift of greeting reference, and changes in the acts of greeting. This paper aims to describe the term of addressing used by the society, analiyzing manner and logic structure of the term of addressing, also the actualization and the dynamics of the usage of the term of addressing. Furthermore, to obtain varied data the author determines a population consisting of a number of groups, especially university students. This is with the assumption that in addition to their age level where they are highly productive in using greetings, it is also possible that they have example forms of greetings and acts of greeting. Using speech act theory in sociolinguistics approach data was achieved with observation method in questioner and cards of data. The result of classification was analized with introspection, comparation, and equal-referential method which is formed in formal and informal description. From a number of semi-closed questionnaires listing questions about attitudes and selections of greeting the author obtains some results. These are a mapping of common greeting forms used by people in general, the background of common greeting forms used by people, and the actualization as well as dynamics of the use of greeting forms in Indonesian speech society.

Abstract

Abstract

Javanese cultural words are the linguistic units which are very specific to Javanese culture and society. This article aims at describing what Javanese cultural words that are found in the local newspapers, what they represent, and why they are used in the local newspapers in Central Java. Non-participant observation is used to present the data for analysis, continued with page-filing and note-taking techniques. Referential, reflective-introspective, and abductive inferential methods are used to analyze the data. The result indicates that the Javanese cultural words found in the local newspapers represent festivals, rituals, Javanese ways of life, social activities, actions, feelings, thoughts, behavior, and experiences. The words become the indicators that the journalists of the local newspapers in Cental Java have positive attitudes toward Javanese words. This becomes a model for language maintenance of Javanese. This implies that the words are stored in the long-term memory, that become mental image, which are used when needed by the user for communication. The existence of the concepts residing in the mind will make the Javanese language maintenance possible, which is supported by the attitudes of the Javanese.

Abstract

This article discusses the directive speech acts contained in tembang dolanan. Using a pragmatic approach, particularly the framework of speech act theory, this article analyzes the different types of directive speech acts, the context which it embodies, and the level of decency. The data used in this research consisted of various tembang dolanan that contain directive statements. These data were analyzed using interpretation and inference by presenting it in the form of descriptive analysis. Descriptive analysis is meant to describe, systematically illustrating or elaborating the facts and relationships between phenomena. In the dolanan song, directive speech acts can be expressed directly or indirectly. Direct expression is conventionally used to rule, invite, and forward, while indirect expression is used when instead of by a command line, the intention is ruled by statement sentences, obligation-stating sentences, and questions. The use of direct speech acts generally does not have the value of politeness because they tend to still contain elements of coercion, have no effort to obscure the form of an order, and show the superiority of the speakers. On the other hand, the use of indirect speech acts seems to be an attempt to obscure the commandments to be more polite in the hope opponents would happily respond to commands.

Abstract

At first, marketing practitioners and academics consider standardized approaches to marketing and advertising strategies in globalization, and then some studies proved that the standardization of advertising across culture is not valid. Therefore, cross cultural advertising takes local culture into account when conveying messages in advertisements. Cross cultural understanding is very important in order to produce successful localized advertising that would reflect the cultural values and norms of intended audience. Challenge in cross cultural advertising is the problem of communicating to people of diverse cultural background. Cross cultural solutions are applied in areas such as language, communication style, images and cultural values. Cross cultural advertising is simply about using common sense and analyzing how the different elements of an advertising campaign are impacted by culture and modifying them to best speak to the target audience. Other challenges are determining between standardization and adaptation of cultural values content of advertising when facing different people from diverse cultures. In academic side, the challenge is preparing students to design advertisements that communicate effectively to diverse cultures.
