Abstract

Indonesia's education is heavily focusing on developing students' good characters. Character values can be explored from the legacy of the previous generations through old scriptures. Of many genres of Javanese scriptures containing character values are the wulang scripts, such as Suluk Candra, written by Prince Wijil Kadilangu  and stored  in  Museum Rekso Pustaka Mangkunegaran Library. This article explores the character values depicted by  the  manuscript  and  contextualizes  them  with  today's  education.  The present study employs the principles of philology and the interpretation of texts. The working principle of philology aims to produce a text edition, while interpretation aims to analyze the content of the text. It is found that Suluk Candra is a script containing Islamic values, teaching at least four ethics that can be contextualized with the world of education in the current 4.0 era. On the ethical values, there are ethics to the king/ leader/ state, ethics to teachers, ethics to fellow human beings, and ethics to oneself. Besides, there are also values of character education in Suluk Candra. Those character values are relevant to the present day, including the love of science, logical thinking, critical, creativity, innovation, religiosity, honesty, and nationalism.

Abstract

This  paper  presents  a  study  on  Sarakata  manuscripts  from  the collection  of  the  National  Library  of  the  Republic  of  Indonesia.  The Sarakata analyzed in this research is  entitled "Surat-Surat dari Aceh" with  the  code  ML  447  written  in  the  19th  century  Jawi  script.  This Sarakata  consists  of  nine  letters,  four  of  which  are  analyzed  in  this study,  namely  Sarakata  3,  5,  6,  and  7.  These  Sarakatas  are  selected due  to  their  historical,  economic,  political,  social,  and  Islamic  law aspects.  The  text  structure  is  examined  using  'guidance  of correspondence'  in  Kitab  Tarasul.  It  is  found  that  compared  to Tarasul, SSA sarakata has five elements, one of which is not contained in  Kitab  Tarasul,  namely  the  pledge.  The  different  correspondence formats  are  due  to  the  fact  that  Aceh  has  its  Islamic  proprietary custom.  Another  segment  under  analysis  was  the  Sarakata  stamp (sikureueng  seal)  which  the  Aceh  sultans  used  in  establishing important  royal  letters.  This  seal  consists  of  one  or  nine  circles  with different  designs  and  decorations  depicting  each  king's  arts  and specific  objectives.  The  present  study  examines  this  usage  by employing  the  semiosis  process  by  Pierce.  The  study  results  indicate that  the  sikureueng  seal,  adorned  with  natural  and  geometric  shapes, represented  meanings  such  as  a  yearning  of  growth,  peace,  welfare, life, and longevity.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyse deconstructively an idea expressed in the novel, “Lembata”, by F. Rahardi. The novel takes its name from an island in the Province of Nusa Tenggara Timur, in Eastern Indonesia. The majority of the people there are Catholic. A priest, Pedro, is given a task there by his bishop. In Lembata, he struggles with the basic problem faced by the people, poverty. Of course that poverty is a complex matter. Facing this, he is concerned by the need to import altar bread and grape wine for use in the Eucharist. He sees this as being an example of the Catholic Church supporting capitalism, which he identifies as the root cause of poverty. Pedro takes a controversial stand. He takes local foods, corn and arak, and uses these in the ritual of the Eucharist, instead of imported bread and wine. Written in a deconstructive way, the novel has elements that have relevant values relating to the way injustice can be perpetrated under the guise of promoting religious piety. As well as raising the question about the possibility of using alternative material to what is the norm in a religious ritual, the novel,“Lembata”, also speaks about the concept of deconstruction and the attitude of the Catholic Church to poverty.

Abstract

The nationalistic attitude of some Muslims in Indonesia is questioned because they are considered intolerant of non-Muslims, especially non-Muslims who are nominated to be leaders in a Muslim-majority region.  In fact, the tendency to elect a leader is usually motivated by environmental and religious factors, not because of the absence of nationalism and tolerance towards believers of other religions. This article’s purpose is to prove that this nationalism attitude was also owned by Indonesian Islamic scholars in old times, especially local Tafseer (Tafseer is a commentary book of knowledge) scholars in Javanese. This Javanese Tafseer was chosen because it contains native Indonesians wisdom. The method used in this research is a thematic Tafseer method by elaborating on the opinions of Javanese Tafseer scholars on verses related to nationalism. The conclusion of this article reveals that the Javanese Tafseer scholars have very high nationalistic attitudes towards their country. This is reflected in his work which is very prominent in the aspects of love for their homeland, tolerance, and defending the country.

Abstract

Al-Qiro'ah al-Rosyidah textbook studied by beginner santri (a term for students admitted to study in Islamic boarding schools) in several Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia is due to its simple vocabulary and easy-to-understand word structure character values that are in line with Islamic values. From the textbook, al-Qiro'ah al-Rosyidah, children and adolescents can learn aspects of language and understand the values and norms implied in each text title. This paper aims to explore the character values contained in the textbook al-Qiro'ah al-Rosyidah. The activities described in the book indicate past activities such as farming, gardening, anchoring, etc. which are different from the present conditions. Therefore, it needs contextualization with value activities in the present.  This paper is employing descriptive qualitative research with a literature study approach, namely extracting from a textbook. Data collection was carried out through reading and recording, which were then followed by mapping and classification. Critical discourse analysis techniques are used in analyzing the data in this paper. This paper concludes that the textbook al-Qiro'ah al-Rosyidah contains character values that follow Islamic norms, which are reflected in society's life in the past. These values are in the form of patience, trustworthiness, sincerity, responsibility, help, cooperation, respect for others, etc. This study suggests analyzing the same book as a whole for volumes 1, 2, and 3 so that the values extracted are more diverse according to the varied descriptions of past experiences
