Abstract

This research explores the internalization of Sufism values in forming an attitude of religious moderation in the Thoriqoh Syadziliyah Al Masudiyah Jombang congregation amidst increasing radicalism. Using a qualitative case study approach, data was collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model. The results show that the internalization of Sufism values such as asceticism, tawakkal, sincerity, patience, gratitude, love, willingness, tolerance, and non-violence is carried out through the recitation of Selapanan Ahad Legi with active learning methods involving the congregation's cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. As a result, the congregation developed a moderate attitude toward religion, reflected in a simple lifestyle, optimism, sincere quality of worship, strong fighting power, not being easily provoked, gratitude, love for others, and tolerance of diversity. Further research is recommended to examine the effectiveness of internalizing Sufism values in different age groups or social backgrounds and its impact on community social cohesion.

Abstract

Succumbing to absolute neglect, the Tsangaya system faces many avoidable problems. Most of the attempts made by some administrations to address these problems appeared to have been narrowed down to either abolishing the system or blending it with alien elements. The beautiful aspects of the system appeared to have been ignored. This paper, generating data from interviews and document analyses, attempts to bring out some of the ignored features of the Tsangaya system, the problems it faces and suggestions for a sustainable reform. The aim is to bring into light some aspects of the system which risks being lost amidst the blind attacks against Tsangaya and the way for a feasible and sustainable reform. The reason for selecting this topic is the present attempts being made to reform the Tsangaya system in Nigeria. The paper reveals that aspects such as student/teacher relationship, class management and control, assessment of student's academic performance, etc. are beautiful features of the system which the conventional education system could borrow and integrate. A holistic approach, including recognising the noble status of the system as the custodian of the Qur’an, its teachers and students, is suggested in order to realise a sustainable and feasible reform.

Abstract

Extremism and radicalisation are not a new phenomenon in Afghanistan. Since the end of Soviet occupation in 1989, Afghanistan underwent several phases of challenges, either in the form of political instability, economic crisis, civil war, or foreign intervention due to geopolitical interests. One of the most challenging problems that Afghanistan has been facing is the threat of extremism and radicalisation resulting from multivariate factors. Extremist ideologies such as Salafi-jihadism, the presence of radical ideologues, and foreign intervention inside Afghanistan has intensified the challenge of extremism and radicalisation. In light of this reality, this article seeks to analyse how the government of Afghanistan deals with the problem of extremism and radicalisation in their midst through an educative approach or educational programs that they implement in higher learning institutions. Specifically, this article seeks to examine to what extent the implementation of a nation-building module known as ‘The Islamic Moral System Module (I.M.S.M.) has been effective in mitigating the problem of extremism, radicalisation and, at the same time, nation-building in post-war Afghanistan. Using mixed methods, the article looks into the implementation of IMSM on undergraduate students at Balkh University in Afghanistan between 2017 and 2020. The implementation of the IMSM module indicates that the educative approach produced positive results in nation-building. However, the educative approach needs to be tailored according to the nature of the challenge and context of the historical background of the country.

Abstract

Education plays a central role in shaping students' character and competencies. Islamic Religious Education (PAI) serves as a means of fostering students' morals and religious understanding. However, its implementation in public schools faces several challenges, including limited instructional time and a lack of integration with daily life. With the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, the Pancasila Student Profile (P5) has become a foundation for character development. However, preliminary research indicates that teachers' understanding of P5 implementation in PAI learning remains limited.  This study aims to analyze the implementation of P5 values in PAI learning at SMP Negeri 2 Negara, focusing on strategies for internalizing values, challenges encountered, and recommendations for improving learning effectiveness. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method. The findings reveal that although various activities based on local wisdom have been implemented, the internalization of P5 values in PAI learning has not been optimal. The successful implementation of P5 values depends on contextual learning strategies, active teacher participation, and an inclusive school environment.  This study contributes to identifying challenges and opportunities in developing a more inclusive and diversity-based model of religious education. Therefore, a holistic approach to PAI learning is needed to ensure that Islamic and Pancasila values are deeply and sustainably instilled in students' lives.

Abstract

The rapid integration of digital technology into Islamic education presents new challenges to the effectiveness of assessment systems, particularly in Islamic Religious Education (PAI). Existing evaluation models often emphasize cognitive outcomes while neglecting affective and spiritual dimensions, which are central to Islamic education. This study aims to explore the contribution of Imam Al-Ghazali’s educational thought in formulating a more holistic and contextually relevant evaluation model for PAI in the modern era, especially within polytechnic institutions. Using a qualitative approach through library research, this study analyzes Al-Ghazali’s classical works and related academic literature. The findings indicate that Al-Ghazali’s evaluation model, which integrates cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects and emphasizes Sufi-based values such as worship habituation, self-reflection, control of desires, and moderation, remains highly applicable to today’s digital learning environment. This approach shows that value-based assessment can not only measure academic achievement but also support the formation of students’ character and ethical integrity. The study contributes conceptually to the development of integrative Islamic education evaluation models and recommends further empirical research to validate its practical implementation across various educational levels. Such efforts are essential to align Islamic education with the demands of the digital era while preserving its foundational moral and spiritual objectives.

Abstract

Evaluation of learning in traditional “pesantren” was rarely conducted systematically, resulting in a gap between their rich conventional practices and the need for structured evaluation instruments. Most pesantren rely on inherited kitab based on learning systems without written instructional designs, which makes it difficult to measure the effectiveness of learning objectively. This study developed the learning Islamic Boarding Evaluation Model (LIB-E Model), an evaluation framework based on the characteristics of traditional pesantren. The model had three main components: input, process and output. The method was a mixed-methods approach that adopted the Borg & Gall and Plomp development models. Data were collected through interviews, observations, questionnaires, and expert judgment. The results and findings confirmed that the LIB-E Model was both valid and reliable, with a loading factor ≥ 0.30 and Cronbach’s Alpha ≥ 0.70. The model test has a fit value that Chi Square (x2) < 2xdf, p-value > 0.05, RMSEA < 0.08. The quality is considered highly effective by practitioners and users within pesantren environments. This model was proven to be practical, efficient, and capable of providing comprehensive evaluation information, offering a contextual solution to the limitations of conventional evaluation models of learning in Islamic boarding “pesantren”.
