Abstract

Discussions about the authority and authenticity of hadith remain a crucial discourse in the dynamics of Islamic thought, especially when faced with modern realities. In this article, we analyze the methodological dialectic between sanad criticism and matan criticism as integrative instruments in determining the validity of hadith accounts. By applying qualitative methods through literature research, this article seeks to dissect the relationship between biographical-historical and substantive-rational aspects. The results show that sanad and matan criticism are not two separate entities, but rather a complementary epistemological unity. A study of the hadith on female leadership serves as evidence that methodological dialectics can render a text that is formally considered sahih (authentic) as temporal through siyaq al-wurud analysis. The implication of this article lies in the assertion that traditional hadith criticism methodology has vitality as a framework for religious digital literacy to filter disinformation and decentralize authority in the contemporary era. Therefore, this finding offers a paradigm that the authenticity of hadith does not only rely on the integrity of transmission, but also on the coherence of the text with the universal principles of Islam and the developing sociological reality.

Abstract

This study aims to trace and analyze the historical development of hadith studies in Indonesia from the 17th century to the contemporary era. The method employed is qualitative research with a library research approach, using historical and descriptive-analytical analysis of relevant classical and modern literature. The findings indicate that hadith studies in Indonesia began in the 17th century through the contributions of Nusantara scholars such as Nuruddin al-Raniri, Abdurrauf as-Singkili, and Yusuf al-Makassari, who integrated hadith with Sufism, jurisprudence, and ethics. This development experienced stagnation in the 18th century but revived in the 19th century through Islamic educational institutions such as pesantren and madrasah, and further strengthened in the modern period with the inclusion of hadith studies in higher education and the growth of Islamic organizations. In the contemporary era, hadith studies have shown significant progress through the increase of academic research, scholarly publications, and the emergence of various forums and scholarly associations. In conclusion, hadith studies in Indonesia have developed dynamically and continuously, from classical to modern traditions, and play an important role in shaping the Islamic intellectual tradition in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the hadith regarding the prohibition of women traveling without a maḥram to distinguish between universal ethical principles (maqṣad) and particular-contextual legal applications (ḥukm). The method employed is qualitative library research using a holistic hadith criticism approach. The analysis includes sanad criticism to verify the authenticity of the narration and matan criticism expanded with a socio-historical approach and Maqāṣid al-Syarī‘ah. The findings indicate that the hadiths possess highly authentic sanad quality. However, the analysis of the matan and socio-historical context reveals that the prohibition was a rational protective response to the hazardous conditions of the 7th-century Arabian Peninsula, where a maḥram served as a security guarantor. Thus, the 'illah (legal cause) of this prohibition is the absence of security (amn), not the act of travel itself. This study concludes that in the modern context, where travel security is guaranteed through transportation systems and state law enforcement, the 'illah has ceased to exist, allowing for a review of the ruling. Permitting women to travel safely in the modern era is viewed as more aligned with maqāṣid to realize public interest (maṣlaḥah) and eliminate harm (mafsadah).

Abstract

The determination of the beginning of Ramadan remains a central debate in Islamic studies, particularly regarding the methods of rukyat (crescent sighting), hisab (astronomical calculation), and istikmal (completion of thirty days). This article analyzes two variant hadith formulations concerning the non-visibility of the crescent: fa in gumma and fa in gubiya, and examines their linguistic implications for the legal construction of determining the lunar month. Using a qualitative approach grounded in semantic-lexical analysis and usul al-fiqh, the study focuses on the commands faqdurū lah and fa akmilū. The findings show that fa in gumma (when the crescent is obscured by external factors) is followed by faqdurū lah, which semantically denotes measurement and precise determination, thus supporting the legitimacy of astronomical calculation (hisab). Conversely, fa in gubiya reflects epistemic limitation, making istikmal a valid and practical legal solution. This study argues that hisab and istikmal are not contradictory but represent complementary legal mechanisms, adaptable to differing epistemic capacities and guided by the principle of maslahah.

Abstract

This study explores women's roles through the Prophetic traditions (hadith) and examines how the Islamization of knowledge can strengthen contemporary Muslim family resilience. While historical narratives have often confined women to domestic roles, this research argues that authentic hadiths—when interpreted through the Islamization framework—reveal dynamic, multidimensional roles for women: spiritual, intellectual, social, and economic, all within the family structure. By integrating classical Islamic scholarship (turath) with contemporary analysis, the study offers a comprehensive framework for empowering Muslim women and promoting balanced familial roles. Using a qualitative, content analysis approach, the paper examines selected hadiths alongside the works of leading Islamic scholars. It draws on the Islamization concepts of Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas and Ismail Raji Al-Faruqi, presenting a holistic epistemological framework that reinterprets hadiths on women’s contributions to family and society. Rejecting secular narratives, this paradigm embeds divine values to recontextualize women as nurturers, educators, intellectuals, and socio-economic participants within the bounds of Shari’ah. The study concludes that a resilient Muslim family requires a return to an Islamic worldview, where hadiths are understood contextually and applied transformatively. This approach enables the formation of balanced, spiritually grounded family units capable of navigating modern challenges.

Abstract

This study analyzes Darquthni’s critique of the sanad (chain of transmission) of a hadis narrated by al-Bukhari concerning the act of declaring fellow Muslims as disbelievers (takfir), as well as its relevance in the context of takfir phenomena in the digital era. Employing a qualitative-analytical approach, this research examines Darquthni’s methodological framework in identifying ‘ilal (hidden defects) within the hadis’s chain of transmission. Although there is an indication of tadlīs (concealment of an intermediary narrator) on the part of Yahya ibn Abi Katsir, the findings reveal that the hadith can still be classified as sahih (authentic) based on a comparative analysis of al-Bukhari’s methodology and the assessments of other hadis scholars. The phenomenon of takfir on social media reflects an increasing tendency to declare others disbelievers without adequate methodological consideration, thereby underscoring the continued relevance of this hadis as an ethical and moral foundation in addressing such accusations in digital spaces. This study emphasizes that the authenticity of a hadis cannot be determined solely on the basis of a single sanad critique, but rather requires a comprehensive examination from multiple scholarly perspectives. It further highlights the importance of caution and a rigorous scholarly approach in responding to takfir phenomena in order to prevent division within contemporary Muslim communities.

Abstract

Hadith serves as an essential source in understanding and explaining the texts of the Qur’an. This study aims to analyze the application of the takhrij hadith methodology in Qur’anic exegesis, examine the influence of hadith validity on the authority of interpretation, and evaluate its relevance in addressing contemporary issues along with its opportunities and challenges. This research employed a qualitative approach using a library research method. The data sources consisted of primary sources, including national and international journal articles and e-books, and secondary sources, such as proceedings and other supporting literature. Data collection techniques involved data gathering, classification, and verification, while data analysis was conducted using inductive content analysis. The findings indicate that the takhrij hadith methodology plays a crucial role in ensuring the validity of hadith used in Qur’anic interpretation. The validity of hadith significantly influences the authority of interpretation, while the application of takhrij results enables Qur’anic exegesis to remain relevant in addressing contemporary issues. Therefore, the takhrij hadith methodology maintains a strategic role in preserving the authenticity and relevance of Qur’anic interpretation in the modern era.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the prohibition of degrading others’ honor in the perspective of hadith, focusing on the narration “inna min arbā al-ribā al-istīṭālata fī ʿirḍ al-muslim bi ghayri ḥaqqin.” This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, including hadith authentication (takhrij), linguistic analysis of key terms, and examination of classical hadith commentaries. The findings reveal that violating a person’s honor (ʿirḍ) is considered a major sin with a high degree of prohibition, as it involves تجاوز (exceeding limits) in exposing or exaggerating others’ faults. However, Islam does not entirely prohibit criticism; rather, it regulates it through strict ethical boundaries. In certain circumstances, mentioning others’ shortcomings is permissible when it serves a legitimate Sharīʿah-based purpose, such as reporting injustice, seeking legal advice, preventing wrongdoing, offering sincere counsel, and providing necessary warnings or identification. The practice of the Prophet SAW demonstrates that criticism can be delivered objectively, proportionally, and for the sake of public benefit without degrading individual dignity. Therefore, this study emphasizes that Islamic communication ethics require a balance between preserving honor and conveying truth, particularly in the context of freedom of expression in the modern era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) on the practice of walimah in modern weddings, examine the concept of walimah based on hadith in a contextual perspective, and formulate efforts to actualize these values in contemporary life. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research, with descriptive-analytical methods applied to hadith texts on walimah derived from classical hadith collections as well as relevant academic literature on FOMO and modern marriage. The findings reveal that FOMO, driven by social media exposure, has shifted the meaning of walimah from a religious practice rooted in gratitude and simplicity into a form of social representation characterized by consumerism and public validation. In contrast, hadiths on walimah emphasize principles of simplicity, flexibility, and blessing as the foundation of its implementation. Therefore, the reactualization of walimah hadith is essential to restore the orientation of marriage toward its substantive values, independent of digital social standards. This study highlights that a contextual understanding of hadith can serve as a relevant approach to addressing contemporary social challenges while maintaining the essence of Islamic teachings in modern wedding practices.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze etiquette toward ulama and examine the prohibition of ghuluw from a hadith perspective. The development of digital media and changes in religious authority have influenced public relations with religious figures and shaped patterns of adherence that are not always based on scholarly depth. This condition highlights the importance of a hadith-based framework for understanding the boundary between respect for ulama and excessive attitudes toward religious figures. This study employs a qualitative approach through library research based on thematic hadith analysis (mawḍū‘ī). Primary sources include hadith collections and classical adab literature, while secondary sources consist of scholarly articles relevant to the topic. The findings show that the Prophet’s hadiths construct a framework of proportional respect toward ulama based on their scholarly authority as inheritors of prophetic knowledge rather than personal privilege. Hadiths concerning the prohibition of ghuluw indicate concern toward excessive religious attitudes that, in some scholarly interpretations, carry theological implications. The principle of wasathiyyah may be understood as a framework for explaining a balanced relationship between Muslims and ulama.
