Abstract

Various activities in coastal areas have negative impacts on the ecological stability of the waters. The result of human anthropogenic activities around the water causes changes and degradation of the aquatic environment. The population development in the Tanjungpinang City area continues to increase and is starting to spread to the coastal area, one of which is the Madong coastal area. The Madong area is used for various kinds of coastal activities, including catching biota, transportation areas, fish ponds or cages for consumption, and residential areas. Thus, this area is prone to water pollution and a decrease in water conditions. For this reason, a recent study is needed related to the condition of water pollution which is described using the Water Pollutant Index. The results of the study show that the parameters of temperature, turbidity, DO, BOD, and pH are parameters that are still in accordance with the quality standard threshold in the Minister of Environment Decree No. 51 (2004). Meanwhile, the TSS value exceeds the water quality standard value, while the salinity is below the quality standard range because the location of Madong waters has a low salinity level. This condition is due to the fact that the waters of Madong are still influenced by freshwater rivers. Overall, the pollutant index value or the Pollutan index for Madong waters of 1.87 is classified as lightly polluted. however, an increase in activity in the future can worsen water conditions and have the potential to increase their pollutant value.

Abstract

Used cooking oil is used frying oil that is usually used repeatedly. For fried food and rice traders, using used cooking oil repeatedly can get big profits because it can save expenses to buy cooking oil. Cooking oil is used repeatedly, causing the fatty acids contained will be more saturated and will change color. dumping used cooking oil into the trenches around the place of sale can damage existing ecosystems and kill aquatic biota and siltation of trenches. If used cooking oil is processed and utilized, it can be an added value and a business opportunity for the community. Like the research conducted by Dalimunthe (2009) turned waste cooking oil into soap. Based on the results of research traders in the District Senapelan know the dangers arising from waste cooking oil is very large for consumers and the environment, but all traders still use cooking oil more than four times the frying pan. Cooking oil used as a frying oil besides being used as soap can also be reused as an air freshener. The need for the government's role in increasing the knowledge of traders to preserve the environment that can be generated from waste cooking oil.

Abstract

Batang Lubuh River is a river which is located in Rokan Hulu Regency. With approximately 151.9 Km (94.4 miles) in length, the river divides the capital of Rokan Hulu Regency Pasir Pengaraian into two parts. Because of the strategic location of the river, which is situated in the downtown, the government utilizes it as a waterfront city that attracts tourists with the local cuisines. The water from the Batang Lubuh River is the main raw material for clean water treatment which is managed by the government of Rokan Hulu Regency and distributed to Rambah sub-district. The purposes of this research were: to find out the water quality of the Batang Lubuh River; to determine the pollutant load of the Batang Lubuh River, which comes from its watercourses, namely, Menaming, Pawan, and Kaiti; to find out the load capacity of the Batang Lubuh River. The results of this research showed that the pollution index of the Batang Lubuh River is 2.38 which means that the river is lightly polluted. The pollution load that flow into the Batang Lubuh River for TSS, BOD5, total coliform, and oil and grease are 0,1350 mg/second; 0,0461 mg/second; 11,601 MPN/second and 0,0291 mg/second respectively, whereas the load capacity for TSS, BOD5, total coliform, and oil and grease in the Batang Lubuh River are 0,0412 mg/second; 0,0353 mg/second; 633,0638 MPN/second and 0,0743 mg/second respectively. Based on the findings, it can be stated that the Batang Lubuh River is not capable of purifying itself from the pollutant load such as TSS, BOD5, and oil and grease because the amount of pollutant load found in the river is bigger than the load capacity. However, the amount of total coliform found in the Batang Lubuh River is bigger than the pollutant load which means that the river still has the capability to recover itself from the pollutant load that flow into it. Based on the results of the model analysis using analytical hierarchy process (AHP), the alternatives found are as follows: 0.313 for supervision and monitoring, 0.288 for counseling/socialization, 0.203 for stakeholder coordination and 0.195 for law enforcement with the inconsistency value of 0.03.

Abstract

The Community-Led Total Sanitation Program is an approach to change sanitation hygiene behavior through triggering activities, which has not fully achieved the national target yet. Due to inadequate environmental sanitation, especially in suburban areas, health problems are increasing from year to year. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of Community-Led Total Sanitation Program on a sustainable environment in the suburban settlement. This was a qualitative study with an action research approach in three districts located in the suburb of Siak River. The participants of this study were residents who lived on the banks of the Siak river and the holders of the Environmental Health Program at the Public Health Center. Data were collected through direct observation and in-depth interviews regarding the Open Defecation Free (ODF) program, handwashing with soap, household food and beverage management, household waste management, and household liquid waste management. This study found that the community-led total sanitation program in the suburban of the three sub-districts of the city of Pekanbaru was not well implemented yet, especially in the ecological aspects of the Open Defecation Free (ODF) program, waste management, and liquid waste management program. Economically, the implementation of the program by non-governmental organizations had not been supported. Socially, health workers and community leaders had provided education related to environmental sanitation and obtained a level of interpretation above 70%. Therefore, the sub-districts and health public centers are recommended to keep educating both the community and the provincial health office in terms of allocating budgetary assistance for communities who live in the suburbs of Siak River.

Abstract

Batik wastewater contains various chemical compounds, such as dyes, synthetic compounds, heavy metals, and organic compounds that can harm the environment. Therefore, proper waste management is required. The use of alum as coagulant in textile wastewater treatment is commonly used, but it is not effective enough to remove wastewater colour and reduce COD. This study aims to modify alum-based batik wastewater treatment using (i)double coagulant by combining alum - FeSO4; and (ii)coagulant-oxidizing agent with combination of alum – chlorine. This experimental study consisted of two stages, the first experiment aimed to determine the optimum composition dose of alum – FeSO4 and alum – chlorine in depositing waste pollutants, reducing the colour and pH of the effluent; the second experiment aims to determine the effect of alum - FeSO4 and alum - chlorine at the optimum dose in reducing the COD. The results showed that alum–chlorine in various compositions reduced colour ten times and precipitated pollutants two times better than alum-FeSO4. The optimum concentration ratio of alum:chlorine is 1:1 (1.2 g/L alum : 1.2 g/L chlorine). This dose reduced the pH to 8; depositing 0.385 g pollutants; removed 99.57% wastewater colour; and decreased COD from 686.9 mg/L to 235.53 mg/L
