Abstract

Abstract Creativity in language is one aspect that caused Cenk Blonk shadow master’s show become interesting and attractive by Balinese people of all ages. Pun is one of speech play forms which found in some servant characters’dialogs of Cenk-Blonk puppeter. Despite theoretically pun means as something that deviates from the target, empirically the substances that showed in the pun that made ​​by Cenk Blonk mastermind fairly swooped and identical to its substance initial form. Structures and lexical forms that are used in his puns are very close to the social experience of the community. It caused the function of his speech play is not only as an entertainment jokes but also serves as social critique and culture identity. Key Words: Cenk-Blonk Performance, Speech Play, and Puns

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is a class action research applying the Contextual Teaching and Learning. The purpose of applying the method is to increase the student ability in basic Japanese grammar (Shokou Bunpo). The research shows that the average score of the students ability in basic Japanese grammar (Shokyou Bunpo) before the application of the Contextual Teaching and Learning was 51 which is categoriced as low. The ability of the students after having the method in the first cycle was 69, and then increased into 80 after the scond cycle. As a whole, the students could reach the score of 80 after second cycle which is categorized as good. Thus the increase of their scores was ranging from low in the first test, into sufficient in the second test, and finally good in the third test. Make simple grammatical Japanese sentences. At this stage the student could make simple grammatical Japanese sentences. The factors affecting the success of the method were the interest and the motivation of the student, good group work, braveness, the habits of the students, their speaking skills, adequate facilities, and the campus environment. As the conclusion, it can be stated that the application of the method of Contextual Teaching and Learning can improve the student basic Japanese grammar (Shokyou Bunpo). Abstract

ABSTRACT Reading is a complex process involving skill and intelligence in which readers make sense of the text by combining their prior knowledge, purpose of reading and the information given in the text. This study addresses some important point regarding MURDER technique in fulfilling the need of University student in reading comprehensively. The researcher then implemented MURDER (Mood, Understand, Recall, Detect, Elaborate, and Review) technique on his attempt to solve the problem face by the fourth semester students of English Education Study program FKIP Unmas denpasar in academic year 2014/2015. The classroom action research was carried out in two-planned cycles that were proceeded by administration of pre-test. The result of the tests, pre-test and post-tests, showed that the students’ reading comprehension improved significantly. To get the supporting data, structured questionnaire, showed positive responses concerning the students’ responses toward the implementation of MURDER technique. These results were considered as the findings of this study. In conclusion, the findings of the present classroom action research have achieved the expected result, that was, improving the low level mastery of reading comprehension; furthermore, it can be, of course, accomplished because of the implementation of MURDER technique. Abstract

ABSTRAK Pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di sekolah formal maupun non formal lebih banyak berkutat pada pembahasan struktur-struktur bahasa Inggris saja, sehingga mengurangi kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan bahasa yang dipelajari dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Oleh sebab itu, ditawarkan metode langsung dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris di lembaga kursus English Center. Hasil dari data kuantitaf menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan metode langsung dapat meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa pada level pemula di lembaga kursus English Center. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil yang dicapai oleh siswa pada saat diberikan tes. Nilai rata-rata siswa pada tes awal adalah 30,6% yang dikategorikan masih sangat kurang. Setelah diberikan treatment pada Siklus I, nilai rata-rata siswa meningkat menjadi 47,7% dan masih berada pada kategori kurang. Namun, pada siklus II nilai rata-rata siswa meningkat menjadi 71,3% dan berada dalam kategori baik. Peningkatan ini juga didukung oleh data kualitatif. Siswa mampu berbicara dalam konteks percakapan sederhana. Mereka mampu menggunakan ungkapan-ungkapan dan kosakata tertentu secara komunikatif. Kata kunci: keterampilan berbicara, peningkatan, kosakata, metode langsung.

Abstract

Abstract Excellent English Speaking ability and assessment of oral production can be one of success indicators for students of English study program at Mahasaraswati Denpasar University to be qualified teachers. However, students of semester four G still found weaknesses to obtain. This present research was conducted to improve their learning achievement in speaking skill and assessment. It made use a classroom action research design through communicative approach type academic debate and oral production test. The initial condition of students speaking skill was categorized as poor level because the mean score of pretest was 50. The application of cyclic process, which consisted of two cycles, involved four steps: planning, action, observation and reflection. The increasing ability in each cycle could be seen from their scores either individual or team. The individual score of each session for three aspects of debate had gradually increased. The mean score of cycle I was 72 which can be categorized as sufficient level and cycle two was 83 which meant at very good level. The students’ responses were also positive after this learning model was applied. They also admitted that they had learned many things which were related to their skill in controlling emotion, practicing speaking ability, enriching vocabularies, and arguing in positive attitude. Based on the finding and discussion, the communicative approach type academic debate and oral production assessment can improve students’ ability in speaking English. Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is a classroom action research which aimed at 1) investigating the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension after being treated by Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials and 2) investigating the students’ response about the implementation of Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials towards reading comprehension. For the accomplishment of the research, 41 X IS 2 freshmen of SMA N 7 Denpasar were involved within this research. In garnering the data, reading comprehension test, observation sheet, interview guide, and questionnaire were used as the research instruments. Afterwards, the gained data was analyzed by means of qualitatively and quantitatively descriptive analysis. The first finding of the research is Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials were able to enhance the students’ reading comprehension. It was proven by the mean score gained at the cycle I was 69.65 which was lower than the mean score in cycle II that was 78.75. Both of the mean scores were higher than the mean score of the pre-test which was 63.17. The second finding of the research is that there was a positive response from the students towards the implementation of Affinity strategy and authentic reading materials. This finding was supported by the result of the interview and the questionnaire. The students felt at ease to undergo learning and teaching process within the implementation of Affinity strategy. Affinity strategy assisted the students to construct their knowledge about the passages through connecting their prior knowledge and peers. Moreover, the authentic reading materials provided the students with a real language classroom. Key Words: Authentic reading materials, Affinity strategy, reading comprehension

Abstract

RINGKASAN Internet dengan berbagai fiturnya memiliki potensi yang besar sebagai referensi dalam proses penerjemahan. Melihat hal tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh gambaran mengenai bagaimana mahasiswa mata kuliah penerjemahan memakai internet untuk membantu kegiatan penerjemahan dan sejauh mana keberhasilan mahasiswa dalam menerjemahkan pada bagian-bagian teks yang menggunakan internet sebagai bantuan. Pada akhirnya penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan rekomendasi bagaimana memaksimalkan pemanfaatan internet dalam proses penerjemahan sehingga dapat diintegrasikan dalam pembelajaran di kelas. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data diperoleh melalui kuisioner yang diisi mahasiswa, hasil terjemahan dan anotasi penerjemahan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perangkat online yang paling banyak digunakan adalah mesin penerjemahan ‘Google Translate’, kamus online dan mesin pencari ‘Google Search’. Kualitas hasil penerjemahan oleh mahasiswa dirasakan masih kurang terutama dilihat dari keakuratan pilihan kata dan aspek tata bahasa. Kualitas hasil penerjemahan dapat ditingkatkan dengan melatih mahasiswa menggunakan fitur mesin pencari ‘Google Search’ terutama untuk menguji apakah pilihan kata atau phrase yang digunakan natural dalam bahasa Inggris dan mencari alternatif pilihan kata, phrase atau kalimat yang lebih sesuai. Selain itu kesalahan dalam penggunaan tata bahasa bahasa Inggris juga dapat diperbaiki dengan penggunaan perangkat online. Kata kunci: terjemahan, internet

Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper entitled Analysis of Cultural Vocabularies Translation in Chinmoku’s Novel is mainly aimed at investigating how the procedure analysis of cultural vocabularies from Japanese text to Indonesian text and any changes during translation. This research used some book with analysis Chinmoku’s novel. Those books are used as reference in this paper because the books represent the cultural vocabulary translation. In this research the data source was collected by reading those book and choosing the words that represent the cultural vocabularies translation. Then, the data was analyzed by descriptive qualitative method and collect all data of cultural vocabularies translation. There are some theories used in analyzing the data, those are the theory of semantic is collect the meaning of Chinmoku’s novel, the theory of translation, translation should have a meaning that is close to the source language, specially for cultural vocabularies translation. These analysis would describe the results of the translation of vocabulary of cultural content ini the Chinmoku’s novel. Keywords: translation, vocabularies, extinguishers culture

Abstract

ABSTRAK Adjektiva tanoshii dan ureshii dalam bahasa Jepang memiliki arti leksikal yang sama tetapi kedua leksikon ini memiliki makna yang berbeda dalam penggunaannya. Penulisan ini membahas tentang makna dari adjektiva tanoshii dan ureshii yang tergolong ke dalam adjektiva perasaan. Analisis dilakukan dengan cara memparafrasekan menggunakan teori Metabahasa Semantik Alami (MSA). Teori MSA ditemukan oleh Andrzej Boguslawski kemudian dikembangkan oleh Anna Wierzbicka digunakan untuk menganalisis makna sebuah kata. Melalui paraphrase dapat ditemukan makna kedua adjektiva ini sehingga diketahui faktor yang menyebabkan si pengalam mengalami kegembiraan. Data diperoleh dari sumber tertulis menggunakan metode studi kepustakaan. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif kemudian hasil analisis disajikan menggunakan metode informal. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa makna adjektiva tanoshii ‘gembira’ mengungkapkan perasaan senang karena telah melihat, mendengar dan mengalami sesuatu yang baik. Perasaan senang yang dialami pengalam disebabkan oleh faktor dari dalam sipengalam sendiri berhubungan dengan perbuatan atau pengalaman yang dilakukan sehingga membawa kesan dan menyebabkan si pengalam merasakan kegembiraan. Adjektiva ureshii ‘gembira’ mengungkapkan perasaan senang disebabkan faktor dari luar setelah menerima, mendengar sesuatu dari orang lain. Kata kunci : semantik, adjektiva, tanoshii,ureshii

Abstract

Abstract This study focused on investigating the main effect of REDW on students’ reading competency and the differential affect of REDW between the students with good vocabulary mastery and with poor vocabulary mastery on students’ reading competency in EESP of Unmas Denpasar. The findings show that the students taught using REDW achieved better reading competency than those who were taught using conventional teaching. Furthermore, there is an interactional effect between teaching strategies and vocabulary mastery on students’ reading competency. The students with good vocabulary mastery improved their reading competency when being taught using REDW than using conventional teaching. And also there is difference in reading competency between the students who have poor vocabulary mastery taught with REDW and with conventional study. It can be concluded that this study provides an empirical evidence of the importance of the teaching strategy considering vocabulary mastery in English reading instructions.
