Abstract

In the context of a pluralistic urban society, religious practices in public spaces often give rise to social dynamics between religious expression and shared comfort. This study examines public perceptions of the use of loudspeakers at the Great Mosque of the Surakarta Palace (Masjid Agung Kraton Surakarta) as part of Islamic preaching practices within a pluralistic public sphere. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with individuals residing in the vicinity of the mosque. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal a diversity of perceptions influenced by respondents’ socio-religious backgrounds. The religious-conservative group views the loudspeaker as an indispensable tool for Islamic proselytization (da'wah). The moderate-pragmatic group adopts an adaptive and tolerant stance, provided that the practice does not disrupt socio-economic activities. Meanwhile, the critical-reflective group advocates for regulated use of loudspeakers to preserve collective comfort. Within the framework of Talcott Parsons’ structural functionalism, these religious practices reflect the four functional imperatives of the AGIL scheme: adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and latency. Nevertheless, potential dysfunctions may arise when symbolic religious expressions are not aligned with the heterogeneous social context. These findings underscore the necessity of fostering social dialogue and adopting moderate policies to maintain intercommunal harmony in urban-plural societies.

Abstract

Balinese Hindu pilgrimage sites are well known for their historical and cultural richness that attract visitors all year around. This study investigated the effectiveness of promotional efforts and how the strength of narrative stories could impact on a visitor's intention to revisit Balinese Temples. It focused on Promotion as the Independent Variable (X), Intention to Revisit as the Dependent Variable (Y), and Narration as the Moderating Variable (Z). A quantitative research method using  direct observation and in-depth interviews with the temple’s caretakers, the Cultural Board Officer, and the local tour guides were conducted to discover the temples’ history and current condition. An online survey was distributed to 250 respondents and the results were tabulated using the Smart PLS application to analyse the effects of promotion and narration to the intention to revisit. The results of this study showed that the promotion significantly influenced the intention to revisit with P-Value = 0.007, while showing an original sample value of 0.067 and a t-statistic of 0.126, the narration of the temples did not give substantial moderation. However, it is essential to integrate linguistic narration into promotion to boost the improvement of Bali’s pilgrimage sites.

Abstract

The advent of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and 5.0 has precipitated substantial changes across myriad fields, including higher education. These developments have been particularly pronounced in America, Europe, the United Kingdom, China, and Asia. Islamic universities, in particular, confront distinctive challenges in adapting to technological advancements such as Big Data and Omics (in the health sector) following the emergence of the novel Coronavirus, while concurrently upholding Islamic principles within the educational curriculum. This article aims to examine adaptation strategies that can be implemented by Indonesian Islamic universities in facing this digital transformation era. Using a literature review approach and conceptual analysis, this article explores the integration of Big Data technology to support data-based decision-making, the development of Omics-based research in biotechnology and health, and curriculum development efforts that combine technology and Islamic values. The results of this study demonstrate that the successful adaptation of Islamic higher education in Indonesia is contingent upon the enhancement of collaboration between academia, industry, and the community, the improvement of digital literacy among faculty and students, and the promotion of policies that demonstrate responsiveness to technological developments. In conclusion, Islamic higher education should aspire to a proactive role in the integration of modern technology with Islamic values, with the objective of creating a more relevant and internationally competitive educational ecosystem.

Abstract

Early childhood education is critical for building a strong foundation for children’s holistic development. Exploring the integration of nature-based and religion-based learning in Desa Petengan, Bandung, Indonesia by using the case of Yayasan Al Anbiya wal Mursalin, it addresses two questions: (1) how is the combination between learning from nature and religious values applied in early childhood education? (2) why is it important to integrate nature-based and religious-based learning early education setting? The study examines the implementation of nature-religion integrated learning in early childhood education, and its significance for children’s holistic development. A descriptive-explorative qualitative design is employed with data collected through classroom observations, interviews and documentation analysis. Findings reveal that integration of nature and religion not only enriches learning experiences but also fosters cognitive, socio-emotional, moral, and ecological awareness among children. These findings indicate that contextual learning grounded in local wisdom and spiritual values strengthens the sustainability of early childhood in rural communities. The study provides valuable implications for policy makers, educators, and researchers seeking to promote sustainable and value-based early education. Combination between learning from nature and religious values in early childhood education shows two learning domains, they are environmental (nature) and spiritual (religious). The combination is directly examined the process and practice of integration. Moreover, it answers and explores community response and impact by understanding why the model gains social legitimacy. It connects the outcome of integration (trust, satisfaction) with the value-based learning model. Model of pedagogical implementation and social validation combine natural and religious learning there.

Abstract

Strengthening local wisdom is important in character education to foster empathetic and tolerant attitudes in a multicultural society. This research aims to examine the values of Bugis local wisdom and their application in character education. A qualitative approach employing content analysis was used to analyze literature and field data in order to identify the core values of Bugis local wisdom. The findings reveal that Bugis local wisdom aligns with the values of pluralism in Indonesia, as reflected in the concept of pesse (empathy). This concept is manifested through principles such as Sipakatau (humanizing others), Sipakalebbi (mutual respect), Sipakainge (mutual reminding), and Sipakatou (mutual recognition). Bugis proverbs, including “Mali siparappe, rebba sipatokkong, malilu sipakainge,” further illustrate the spirit of mutual cooperation and social concern. At IAIN Palopo, these values were implemented through the tudassipulung and Living Values models and were found to be effective in developing key character traits among students, including empathy, compassion, togetherness, respect for differences, willingness to sacrifice, tolerance, and mutual assistance. These behaviors were observed both inside and outside the classroom, indicating that character education grounded in Bugis local wisdom effectively shapes student behavior in accordance with the culture’s noble values.

Abstract

In the cultural heritage of the archipelago, incantations function not only as healing incantations or prayers, but also as a medium that combines material elements in the form of natural ingredients and spiritual elements in the form of prayers and suggestions of faith. This study aims to reveal the harmony between the Islamic archipelago and local culture in traditional health practices recorded in the Kitab Tetamba from Cirebon, a 16th century manuscript containing various herbal recipes and incantations as means of healing. The present study employs a descriptive method by analysing the text, with a particular focus on the section about influenza treatment in the Tetamba Book, to interpret the cultural meaning and spiritual values contained therein. The analysis demonstrates that the treatment system outlined in the manuscript is holistic in nature, integrating the utilisation of medicinal plants with the belief that authentic healing is divinely facilitated by Allah SWT. This practice can be considered as a harmonious acculturation between local traditions and Islamic values, where cultural elements function practically while the spiritual dimension serves as a philosophical foundation. The Tetamba book is a historical artefact that reflects the cultural and spiritual identity of the people of the archipelago in the realm of traditional medicine.

Abstract

Formed through Presidential Regulation No. 57/2016, UIII represents a state initiative to globalise Indonesian Islam and to position it as an intellectual actor in the global academic landscape. This article aim to analyses the epistemological transformation in Indonesian Islamic scholarship through the establishment of the Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII). By using document analysis of government policies, journalistic reports, the university’s official website, observation, and scholarly discourse, this study argues that UIII marks a paradigmatic shift in Indonesian Islamic higher education, from a normative-theological model towards a secular-academic epistemology with a global orientation. Nevertheless, this orientation also reveals ambiguities, for UIII simultaneously seeks to undertake a decolonial process, namely challenging Western paradigms on the one hand while embracing the Islamic intellectual tradition on the other. This analysis shows that UIII is situated within an epistemological tension that is not easily synthesised: the institution rejects the dominance of a single centre of knowledge, yet at the same time has not formulated a stable alternative epistemological form. Thus, UIII is more aptly understood as a dynamic space of epistemic negotiation, where various knowledge traditions compete and engage in dialogue to shape the future configuration of Indonesian Islamic scholarship.

Abstract

Prolonged agricultural land pawn practices in indigenous communities often create structural inequalities and recurring disputes due to unclear legal boundaries. This article examines the dynamics of customary land rights (hak ulayat) in agricultural land pawn practices and the resolution of related disputes within the indigenous community of Lebung Jangkar Village. Land is perceived as ancestral heritage with strong social and cultural significance, making pawn practices socially accepted as temporary economic instruments without transferring ownership. However, extended pawn periods and the continuous utilization of pawned land by pawn recipients frequently result in unequal power relations and latent agrarian disputes. Focusing on rice field pawn disputes, this study analyzes the relationship between customary land rights, pawn practices, and dispute resolution through traditional elders (kriye). Using a qualitative normative-empirical approach through interviews, observation, and document analysis, the study finds that dispute resolution through the kriye functions as an effective living law grounded in deliberation, social harmony, and substantive justice, substantively aligning with the Islamic legal principles of ṣulḥ and rahn. Nevertheless, the absence of written documentation and the weak integration of Article 7 of Law Number 56 of 1960 indicate the need for greater normative harmonization to ensure legal certainty and equitable protection for customary landholders.
