Abstract

This qualitative descriptive research aimed to describe in detail the meaning of the values of religion and the expression of women's resignation among batik workers in the struggle of the production process, and the factors that influence it. The research took place in Pekalongan City and data were obtained through observation, interviews, and literary studies. The results showed that a deep belief in God is the foundation of understanding the value of religion in the world of work as well as when they interact with the skipper and other workers. The expression of resignation is seen in almost all stages, from raw material procurement and production to marketing. The surrender of women workers is also evident in labor relations and outside the employment relationship, which is due to the fact that the religious elite is the skipper and the social conditions of a patriarchal religious culture.

Abstract

The current study aims to examine the impact of cultural dimensions (i.e., collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and masculinity) on students’ attitudes toward problem-based learning. The design of the study was a correlational survey, in which participants were recruited through convenient sampling. Inspection of a multiple regression analysis (N = 549) revealed that collectivism and masculinity positively corresponded with students’ attitudes. In particular, the findings showed that the higher the levels of collectivism and masculinity, the more students supported the implementation of problem-based learning. In contrast, uncertainty avoidance was negatively related to students’ attitudes, such that the higher this cultural dimension, the less students supported problem-based learning. Power distance was the only predictor that did not significantly predict students’ attitudes toward problem-based learning. Overall, these findings suggest the importance of taking into account the characteristics of norms and values held within a country that may contribute to the success, feasibility, and suitability of problem-based learning. Theoretical implications and study limitations are discussed, along with practical strategies highlighting how to address cultural potentials and pitfalls in an effort to promote problem-based learning.

Abstract

Problems of the environment now show an alarming rate. Various facts of environmental destruction on Earth have disturbed its inhabitants. This paper employs patterned library research and browsing to explore Islamic contributions in solving this problem. As a result, Islam gives great attention to various problems of human life, including environmental issues. This formulation is different from Western modernist scientific views that tend to rely only on technical approaches without considering other aspects. In fact, using a technical approach alone is not sufficient; it also requires other approaches, including the transcendent and the profane.
