Paradigma: Jurnal Kalam dan Filsafat is a journal published by Department Aqidah and Islamic Philosophy in the Faculty of Ushuluddin Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University of Jakarta in partnership with Asosiasi Aqidah dan Filsafat Ilsam Indonesia (AAFI). Paradigma: Jurnal Kalam dan Filsafat has published at the first time in September 2019 and hereafter the journal was continuing published twice annually (June and December) and consists of articles on Kalam Studies and Philosophy.

Abstract

In today's modern era, humanity is faced with rapid advancements in technology and information. The ease of access allows people to obtain information quickly from one place to another. One of the characteristics of modern times is the shift in human understanding from a theocentric to an anthropocentric worldview. By prioritizing rationalism, empiricism, and materialism, modern humans have become the center or axis of life. According to Nasr, modernity is a condition in which humans exist outside the center of reality. Nasr also explains the problems of modernity caused by the modern worldview that places humans at the center of reality. The shift from a theocentric to an anthropocentric perspective is the main cause of the problems of modernity. The impacts of these problems include a spiritual crisis, an environmental crisis, and a civilizational crisis. The Islamic tradition presented by Nasr serves as a solution to these problems by reintroducing Islamic teachings from the classical era to the present, and comparing them with modern understandings from their origins to the present. This aims to clarify how these teachings can be applied in life so that worldly life may proceed better than before.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Raja Ali Haji’s views on political leadership. The recent rise in immoral, corrupt, and selfish leaders highlights the urgent need for reform. This serves as a reminder for us to choose leaders who meet the criteria of ideal leadership, in order to create a happy and prosperous society in line with the values and goals of Islamic teachings. As a scholar, thinker, and statesman, Raja Ali Haji developed a concept of political leadership rooted in Islamic tradition and Malay culture, which remains relevant in certain aspects to the current context. This research uses a descriptive-analytical method. It is a library research based on Raja Ali Haji’s primary work Tsamarat al-Muhimmah, supported by secondary sources such as books, journals, articles, and other scholarly works related to leadership. The thesis writing technique follows the Rector’s Decree No. 507 and the 2017 UIN Jakarta Guidelines for Scientific Writing. This study shows that a leader should be someone respected by the community, as such a leader would nurture the people, possess high moral standards, protect them from harm, provide guidance, and lead them in both worldly and spiritual matters. Such a leader is knowledgeable and firmly upholds Islamic teachings. Leaders with these qualities are believed to be capable of fostering both physical and spiritual well-being.

Abstract

The issue of the concept of fate and human freedom in Islamic theology involves various perspectives, such as Qadariyah, which emphasizes human freedom, and Jabariyah, which considers fate as absolute decree. Tafsir Al-Amthal combines these diverse views to provide a comprehensive understanding of the verses of the Qur'an. The research focuses on the views of Nāsir Makārim Shīrāzī in his work "Al-Amthal Fī Tafsīr Kitāb Allah Al-Munzal". Thematic method of verses is used to describe and analyze the concept of fate. The research results indicate that fate is Allah's decree which depends on human effort. Makārim Shīrāzī highlights the divine wisdom in fate, where humans have a role in their actions according to the will of Allah.

Abstract

This research is a study of the concept of religious socialism as a way of social justice from the perspective of Nurcholish Madjid contained in his works, especially Islam Kemodernan and Ke-indonesian. This research seeks to explore aspects of Nurcholish Madjid's thought and the relevance of his thought in contemporary Indonesia. The method used by the author in this research is analytical-descriptive, and conducts library research, especially on the book Islam Kemodernan and Ke-indonesiaan. In addition, the author also looks for other sources in the form of books, articles, magazines and journals that are still relevant to this research. Cak Nur proposed the concept of religious socialism that integrates the values of socialism with tawhid to achieve social justice. Cak Nur explained that justice is not just a moral principle, but a mandate from God that must be fought for by every individual and society.

Abstract

The post-truth phenomenon marks a fundamental shift in how society perceives truth, where emotions and subjective opinions overshadow objective facts. In the field of education, this condition undermines scientific authority, trust in knowledge institutions, and students’ critical thinking abilities. This article analyzes the epistemological crisis caused by post-truth through the lens of philosophy of science, drawing on the ideas of Plato, Immanuel Kant, and Karl Popper. These thinkers offer theoretical frameworks to understand and respond to disinformation: from the realm of ideal forms and absolute truth (Plato), the autonomy of reason and freedom of thought (Kant), to the spirit of critical inquiry and falsifiability (Popper). This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, examining classical and contemporary philosophical texts alongside secondary data on digital disinformation, the crisis of trust in science, and weak media literacy among students. The analysis reveals that post-truth is not merely an information crisis, but a deeply rooted epistemological crisis. Therefore, education must reinforce critical literacy, philosophical reflection, and a scientific mindset. Integrating philosophy of science into the curriculum is a crucial transformative strategy to strengthen the intellectual resilience of younger generations in navigating an increasingly complex and distracting post-truth era.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the tension between modern rationalism, which remains critical of mysticism, and religious thought that integrates spiritual experience into the framework of epistemology. The research aims to comparatively examine the epistemology of mysticism in Bertrand Russell and Mulyadhi Kartanegara, focusing on the definition, the way mystical experience is attained, its epistemological status, and its ontological implications. Employing a qualitative method through library research and comparative analysis, the study finds that Russell rejected the epistemic validity of mysticism as it contradicted the principles of logic and empirical science, whereas Kartanegara regarded mystical experience as an integral dimension of human intellect that complements reason and the senses. The study concludes that their fundamental difference lies in the acceptance of non-empirical dimensions, highlighting the importance of fostering dialogue between critical rationality and spirituality to achieve a more holistic understanding of reality.

Abstract

This article aims to capture the socio-theological dimension in the book of ushuluddin Nusantara in the 19th century. The primary source of this research is the book Nūr al-Ẓalām Sharḥ 'Aqīdah al-'Awwām by Nawawi al-Bantanī (1813-1898 A.D.). With the hermeneutics of objectivism subjectivism, the researcher explored the contextual interpretation process of Nawawi al-Bantanī. The results of this study show that Nūr al-Ẓalām Sharḥ 'Aqīdah al-'Awwām is an annotation of the book 'Aqīdah al-'Awwām by Ahmad al-Marzūqī (d. 1864 A.D.). In annotating, Nawawi al-Bantanī does not only emphasize the textual meaning of the book of matan which reflects the views and horizons of its author. Nawawi al-Bantanī also developed his own horizons. For example, in his lecture on the word "bid'ah", Nawawi al-Bantanī traces the objective meaning of the text through an etiomological and terminology approach, then dialogues it with his pre-assumptions. The meeting of these two horizons then encouraged Nawawi al-Bantanī to choose the most relevant meaning, namely bid'ah understood in the paradigm of jurisprudence. Bid'ah in the fiqh paradigm is flexible-varied, some of which actually have a positive meaning. Bid'ah has a positive meaning because it is in harmony with the rules of benefit and maqāsid al-syarī'ah.

Abstract

This study discusses the explanation of the muqaṭṭa‘āt letters found in at-Tafsīr al-‘Irfānī li al-Qur’ān al-Karīm. This work contains a symbolic interpretation of the disconnected letters opening certain surahs, highlighting the richness of the Qur'an's linguistic expression and the depth of meaning it holds. Letters such as alif lām mīm, ṭā hā, and kāf hā yā ‘ain ṣād are understood not merely as meaningless letter combinations, but as containing spiritual and reflective messages that lead to a deeper understanding of the revelation. This research finds that the explanation of the muqaṭṭa‘āt letters in at-Tafsīr al-‘Irfānī emphasizes both linguistic aspects and semantic values that expand the horizons of Qur'anic exegesis. This work serves as evidence that these letters have rhetorical and theological functions in affirming the majesty of the Qur'an. Thus, at-Tafsīr al-‘Irfānī makes an important contribution to the discourse of exegesis by integrating rational explanations and symbolic meanings, opening an interpretive space that is not only textual but also contemplative.

Abstract

Abstrak: Etika dan Moral selalu menjadi pembahasan yang menarik untuk dikaji secara abstrak maupun sistematis. Sebab manusia secara umum, tentunya selalu ingin mengubah kehidupannya menjadi lebih baik. Manusia cenderung untuk mengikuti apa yang dikatakan benar menurutnya dan cenderung menolak apa yang dikatakan salah menurutnya. Apa yang benar, dianggap baik oleh dirinya dan apa yang salah, dianggap buruk oleh dirinya. Akan tetapi, dari hal seperti ini, timbul pertanyaan mendasar bahwa, apakah yang selama ini kita anggap sebagai kebaikan ini benar-benar baik? Dan apa yang kita anggap sebagai keburukan benar-benar buruk? Masyarakat modern selalu berupaya mencari dan menjustifikasi arti dari kebaikan dan keburukan. Dampak dari pencarian konsep moral ini seringkali berujung pada “seseorang” yang akan ter-supremasi dan ter-alienasi. Untuk membatasi arti kebaikan dan keburukan serta dampak yang akan ditimbulkan daripadanya, Arkoun memiliki penawaran universal untuk masyarakat modern hari ini. Upaya rekonstruksi nalar dan moral masyarakat yang Arkoun berikan ini berguna untuk masyarakat agar lebih murni atau objektif dalam memandang segala hal. Tidak pada subjektifitas dan perasaan ego yang dapat merusak kebaikan atau membenarkan keburukan itu sendiri. Tulisan ini setidaknya dapat membantu membentuk kembali dasar penalaran untuk moral masyarakat yang lebih baik ke depan. Abstract:Ethics and Morals have always been an interesting discussion to be studied abstractly and systematically. Because humans in general, of course, always want to change their lives for the better. Humans tend to follow what is said to be right according to them and tend to reject what is said to be wrong according to them. What is right is considered good by him and what is wrong is considered bad by him. However, from something like this, a fundamental question arises that, is what we have considered as good really good? And what we think of as bad is really bad? Modern society is always trying to find and justify the meaning of good and bad. The impact of this search for moral concepts often leads to "someone" being supremized and alienated. To limit the meaning of good and bad and the impact that will result from it, Arkoun has a universal offer for modern society today. Arkoun's efforts to reconstruct the reasoning and morals of society are useful for people to be more pure or objective in looking at everything. Not on subjectivity and ego feelings that can damage the good or justify the bad itself. This paper can at least help reshape the basis of reasoning for a better moral society in the future. Abstract

Abstrak: Krisis spiritualitas disebabkan oleh pelupaan terhadap yang sakral dalam pelbagai ranah, termasuk seni. Menurut Seyyed Hossein Nasr, seorang filsuf perenial sekaligus tradisionalis mengatakan krisis spiritualitas disebabkan karena tenggelamnya esoterisme. Dalam esoterisme itu lah relasi kuat antara seni dan kesakralan dapat didapatkan. Esoterisme juga menjadi penting sebagai landasan seni tradisional, sebuah gagasan yang merupakan antitesis dari pandangan baru tentang seni yang sedang berkembang, yakni gagasan seni untuk seni. Gagasan tersebut mengedepankan pembuatan karya seni untuk kepentingan seni itu sendiri, tanpa memerhatikan nilai-nilai etika atau moral. Oleh karena itu topik mengenai esoterisme dan seni ini menjadi sangat penting dan menarik untuk dibahas. Penulis membatasi penelitian ini pada relasi antara esoterisme dan seni perspektif Seyyed Hossein Nasr, karena menurut penulis, Nasr merupakan tokoh yang sangat pas dalam memberikan penjelasan terkait kedua term tersebut. Dalam penelitian ini penulis mengunakan metode deskriptif analitis, sementara teknik pengumpulan datanya menggunakan library research, yakni pembedahan  terhadap sumber primer karya Seyyed Hossein Nasr dan sumber-sumber terkait lainnya. Salah satu hasil penelitian ini yakni esoterisme memungkinkan manusia untuk membuat obyek seni tradisional yang mengagumkan, serta esoterisme sebagai landasan dan tujuan seni tradisional. Melalui seni tradisional, dimensi esoterisme menemukan bentuknya yang konkrit dan seimbang.              Abstract:The spirituality crisis is caused by forgetting the sacred in various domains, including art. According to Seyyed Hossein Nasr, a perennial philosopher and traditionalist, the spiritual crisis is caused by the decline of esotericism. It is in esotericism that a strong relationship between art and the sacred can be found. Esotericism also became important as a basis for traditional art, an idea that was the antithesis of the new view of art that was developing, namely the idea of art for art's sake. This idea prioritizes creating works of art for the sake of art itself, without paying attention to ethical or moral values. Therefore, the topic of esotericism and art is very important and interesting to discuss. The author limits this research to the relationship between esotericism and Seyyed Hossein Nasr's perspective art, because according to the author, Nasr is a very suitable figure in providing an explanation regarding these two terms. In this research the author used descriptive analytical methods, while the data collection technique used library research, namely dissection of primary sources by Seyyed Hossein Nasr and other related sources. One of the results of this research is that esotericism allows humans to create amazing traditional art objects, and esotericism is the basis and goal of traditional art. Through traditional art, the dimension of esotericism finds its concrete and balanced form.
