Abstract

This research examines the development of the Ma'had Aly curriculum for ulama cadre formation in the digital era, focusing on integrating classical Islamic knowledge with contemporary societal demands. The study is driven by the rapid digital transformation and the growing need for Islamic scholars who can address both traditional religious teachings and modern challenges. As an Islamic higher education institution, Ma'had Aly plays a crucial role in producing competent ulama equipped for both religious guidance and engagement with current issues. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis involving administrators, lecturers, kyai, alumni, and stakeholders. The findings show that Ma'had Aly continually updates its curriculum by blending classical texts with contemporary knowledge, emphasizing digital literacy and social engagement. The application of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and Constructive Alignment ensures that graduates acquire both theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary in today's society.Active stakeholder involvement especially kyai, lecturers, and external religious bodies plays a vital role in shaping the curriculum to meet the expectations of both religious and public spheres. Additionally, integrating digital tools into the curriculum is highlighted as essential for preparing graduates for the demands of the digital age. This study offers valuable insights into curriculum development at Ma'had Aly, contributing recommendations to ensure its continued relevance and leadership in Islamic higher education amidst ongoing societal changes.

Abstract

This article explores the multicultural educational philosophy of KH. Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), a prominent Muslim intellectual and former president of Indonesia, focusing on the strategic role of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in fostering inclusive, tolerant, and pluralistic values. Drawing from Gus Dur’s concept of pribumisasi Islam (indigenization of Islam), the study highlights how pesantren serve not only as religious institutions but also as cultural hubs for social transformation, interfaith dialogue, and democratic engagement. By introducing three core strategies—politico-cultural, socio-cultural, and pedagogical—the paper emphasizes the importance of integrating multiculturalism into Islamic education to counter rising religious intolerance and exclusivism. Gus Dur’s vision positions pesantren as pivotal agents of peacebuilding and civic education, where diversity is embraced as a divine gift. His ideas remain highly relevant in today’s context, offering a transformative model for Islamic education that aligns with Indonesia’s pluralistic identity and the universal values of justice, human dignity, and coexistence.

Abstract

Learning is a systematic system consisting of various interrelated components. These components are: objectives, materials, methods, and evaluation. These four components must be considered in determining the learning model that will be used in learning activities. Learning models are arranged based on educational principles, psychological theories, sociology, system analysis and other theories. Learning models can be selected, meaning that teachers can determine the learning model that will be applied in the learning process according to the situation and conditions of the school environment to achieve learning goals. Teachers are currently required to develop according to their function, fostering, guiding and producing students to achieve educational goals. The development of curriculum, administration and equipment facilities must be balanced with the quality of teachers in carrying out the education process. Because in the entire education process, teachers are the main factor. So it is necessary to improve the quality and professionalism of teachers in carrying out the learning process, especially Islamic Religious Education learning where this can be done through mastery of learning models, so that the learning process can develop and not be monotonous.

Abstract

This study aims to explain and analyse educational approaches to punishment in Islamic education based on the thoughts of Ibn al-Qabisi and the views of other scholars. In the context of Islamic education, punishment is not merely understood as a repressive measure, but rather as a pedagogical tool aimed at shaping the character and morality of students. This study employs a literature review method, examining classical and contemporary literature related to the concept of punishment in education. The findings reveal that, according to Ibn al-Qabisi, punishment should be applied wisely, fairly, and proportionally, taking into account the psychological condition and the severity of the student's mistake. A similar approach is also found in the thoughts of several other scholars, who emphasise the educational dimension in the practice of punishment. These findings are relevant for application in contemporary Islamic education systems, particularly in pesantren environments that emphasise the formation of character and moral values. Thus, the concept of educational punishment can serve as a constructive alternative in addressing the challenges of behaviour development among students today.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools play a central role in shaping human resources with religious, moral, and social character. In the modern context, Islamic boarding schools face the enormous challenge of maintaining their educational authority and relevance without abandoning classical scholarly traditions. This research was conducted at the Annuqayah Lubangsa Selatan Islamic Boarding School, Guluk-Guluk, Sumenep, which is known for its significant contribution in fostering students through a structured management system. The purpose of this study is to analyze the patterns of administrators in building the educational authority of Islamic boarding schools, the strategies used in maintaining this authority amid the challenges of modernity, and its impact on student behavior. The research method used was qualitative with a field study approach. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using an interactive analysis model that emphasized data reduction, presentation, and verification. The results of the study show that the educational authority of Islamic boarding schools is built through synergy between formal structures, moral exemplary behavior, and the internalization of religious values. The management's strategy in maintaining authority is carried out by strengthening Islamic boarding school traditions, using a persuasive-humanistic approach, institutional synergy, and utilizing internal media as a means of education. Abstract

The erosion of moral values and local wisdom in the era of pluralism and rapid modernization has raised concerns about the sustainability of ethical foundations in Indonesian society. This study aims to examine how Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) preserve and reinforce Nusantara ethics amid these contemporary challenges. Employing a qualitative approach with a library research design, data were collected from books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and relevant research reports. The findings indicate that pesantren maintain ethical continuity through the integration of Nusantara ethics into their curriculum, adaptive responses toward modernity, and the exemplary moral leadership of kyai supported by a disciplined santri culture. The discussion highlights enabling factors such as charismatic leadership, adab-centered educational practices, community involvement, and technological literacy, while also identifying challenges that include global cultural pressures, resource limitations, and shifting digital morals. In conclusion, pesantren continue to function as ethical and cultural strongholds that safeguard Indonesia’s moral identity in the modern era.
