Abstract

This article investigates the phenomena of electoral politics and culture of social media in the context of Indonesian law and society through a case study of Jakarta Gubernatorial Election in 2017. The main argument of this article is that the connection between electoral politics and culture of social media shows a fallacious logical thinking in the form of bias and ad populum reasoning. Those two forms of fallacy refer to sectarian politics and ideological polarization. In analyzing the fallacious thinking in some events of the 2017 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election, this article also shows how emotion, anxiety, and hate operate within the reasoning of the relation of the Indonesian state and society. This article primarily aims at identifying the argumentative situation in the case of the 2017 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election, which contains the fallacious thinking. In the end, the ultimate aim is to evaluate an implication that stems from that identification for an adequate conception of legal reasoning in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

In Indonesian, music vocabulary is not only used to describe music but also used to express various non-musical concepts. That means music vocabulary has the potential to occupy the source domain in metaphorical mapping. The study aims at describing the vocabulary of music as the source domain of metaphorical expressions in Indonesian and explaining the relation of metaphorical meanings to the music field. The study was qualitative research. The data of the study was collected from the corpus of Indonesian in the Sketch Engine. The data was Indonesian sentences having the vocabulary of nada, melodi, harmoni, and dinamika in which the contexts of sentences were used to talk about anything in non-music field. The results of the study show that the vocabulary of music in Indonesian causes the metaphor of “LIFE IS MUSIC”. The use of music vocabulary as a source domain is mainly related to the characteristics of musical vocabulary concepts that underlie the formation of metaphorical expressions in Indonesian.

Abstract

The information technology revolution has produced a network society that Manuel Castells characterizes as space of flows and timeless time. Network logic is inclusive to various dimensions of human life and is exclusive to those who are not involved in the network. In a network society the public sphere is expanding, dynamic and increasingly interactive due to the Internet mediation. The transformation of public space also spreads political power amongst the public. An example is the birth of various volunteer groups that have extensive networks in a short time without face-to-face processes. There have also been various attempts to embrace as many groups as possible as reflected in the change of campaign strategy and regeneration by political parties. In addition, the democratization in the Arab countries (Arab Spring) was possibly happened due to the transmission of information and public consolidation which was facilitated by information and communication technology (ICT), specifically social media. The questions are, how far is the role of social media as a forum for political interaction in the network and what kind of interaction that will be formed? This article uses a qualitative approach that contains analytical description that will reflect the transformation of public space in a network society, particularly on how the democratization faces opportunities as well as challenges in its process and the role of social media in the new political interaction. Focusing on Castells’ theory of network society, this article shows that the transformation of public space at the political level has led to an existential crisis that engulfed most of political actors at this time.

Abstract

The existence of facts in journalism can be manipulated, while the truth settles in literature. Although both types of writing, namely news texts, which contain facts, and literary texts, which contain fiction, depart from the same reality, the estuary of the truth in it can be different because it is seen from different perspectives and interests. For these various interests, silencing in journalism often occurs. Facts are circumcised, overhauled, and arranged in such a way as to produce new facts. Meanwhile, in literature, facts are packaged using imagination to disguise the truth as if it did not happen. For this reason, using a functional systemic linguistic approach, the authors uncover various linguistic considerations built by Seno Gumira Ajidarma (SGA) in reducing news in Jakarta Jakarta to fulfill certain interests. Then, the writers also dismantled the formation of meaning behind each text in SGA’s “Saksi Mata”, which contained elements of resistance in literature, by using Derrida’s deconstruction. The result of the study shows that the same facts can be stated in a variety of different and subjective ways. In this case, literary work is an effective tool to voice the truth.

Abstract

The Javanese culture has a specific perspective on the ideal figure of women. This perspective is generally manifested in the classical texts, for example, in Serat Wulang Putri Adisara. Written by Nyi Adisara. Serat Wulang Putri contains the teachings for royal daughters in living their life as Javanese women based on Javanese teachings. In this manuscript, the readers can see the women figure portrayed from the perspective of a woman writer. This paper discusses the ideal women’s discourse in Serat Wulang Putri using the approach of critical discourse analysis from van Dijk. The analysis is conducted by considering the text’s microstructure, macrostructure, and cultural context. Through the analysis, we can see the ideal discourse of Javanese women based on Serat Wulang Putri. Furthermore, the text discusses women as figures who must pay attention to their attitudes and behavior, and can control their hearts, minds, and feelings. In this case, the author uses the male point of view to describe the characteristics of ideal Javanese women. Javanese women are also described as a weak figure and must obey what men command or expect from them.

Abstract

This article deals with the representation of critical nationalism discourse in Banyuwangian music in the New Order era. By juxtaposing representation and hegemony theory which emphasizes textual-contextual reading, we will analyze the constructions of local metaphors we assume supporting the establishment of nationalism. Such constructions intertwined with the mobilization of the uniqueness of local cultures that contributed to establishing the national culture through which nationalism got its “nutrition”. However, some songwriters constructed critical nationalism by representing unique metaphors related to the characteristics of subaltern subjects that in the midst of their problems songwriters still have, in their silence, critical view toward the ruling faction, without negating their responsibility to guard the nation. The representation of critical nationalism using local metaphors is a critique of the social and economic problems caused by the injustice of development programs as well as a creative strategy to negotiate Using cultures in the midst of modernity.
