Abstract

The Chinese-Indonesian relations in 1951 was in tension due the actions of Ambassador Wang Renshu. As China was not favored in the international arena for its communist stand, the Chinese citizens in Indonesia became important factor in the relations between China and Indonesia where they were divided into taking side with either the communists or the capitalists. Wang Renshu, a senior member in the China Communist Party, has recruited between six and seven hundred thousand Indonesians of Chinese ancestry to adopt Chinese citizenship, of which it became a threat to the Chinese-Indonesian diplomatic relations. The withdrawal of Ambassador Wang Renshu marked the failure of the Chinese- Indonesian diplomatic relations.

Abstract

Affixation is one of the process of morphological in Mandarin. Affixes are bound morphemes that are added to other morphemes to form larger units such as words, especially to form a compound word (成词 héchéng cí). Mandarin has two types of affixes: prefixes (precedes the morpheme) and suffixes (follows the morpheme). Prefixes are rare in Mandarin, such as {初chū-}, {第dì-}, {非fēi-}, {可kĕ-}, etc; while suffixes are more numerous, such as {儿-er}, {化 –huā}, {家 –jiā}, {们 –men}, {员 –yuán}, {者 –zhĕ}, { 子-zi}, etc. In Mandarin, affix morphemes can also be divided into two functional categories, namely inflectional morphemes and derivational morphemes, both refers two principal word formation processes: inflection and derivation. Although, Mandarin is not the inflection language, only prefix {初chū-} and suffix {们–men} are inflectional morphemes. Therefore, the derivation process is more productive in Mandarin. Derivational morphemes form new words by changing the meaning of the base (root) and the word class. In consequence, derivation in Mandarin may cause a change of word classes; such as nouns, verbs, and adjective, but generally form nouns.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of the press in uncovering cases of corruption, using the editorial of Pedoman daily newspaper in the early years of the New Order period 1969-1974. The newspaper was eventually prohibited to publish because of its stand to oppose the authoritarian Soekarno government. At the time of president Soeharto’s New Order, the newspaper was allowed to run again, but was officially banned in January 1974 because of the publication of the students’ demonstration in the Malari or Malapetaka Lima Belas Januari opposing the government welcoming the Japanese companies operating in Indonesia. At both the Soekarno and Soeharto governments, Rosihan Anwar was the chief editor of Pedoman. The content analysis will also refer to Indonesia Raya newspaper, which like Pedoman, was suppressed not to criticize the government. The newspaper was no longer free to express its opinion after the graft case in three key offices, Bulog (the National Logistics Agency), Pertamina (the state-owned national oil company), Bea Cukai (the Directorate General of Customs and Excise), and the police force, were exposed. The press was finally co-opted with the government rules.

Abstract

The Javanese leather puppet use myths about the gods, prophets, spirits, and people of the ancient time, besides the texts of Lokapala, Arjunasasrabahu, Ramayana, and Mahabarata to teach prudence and to enable men to respond to the happenings of their natural life, or “daya-daya kekuatan alam” (van Peursen, 1989: 37). These myths contain the moral philosophy about the relation of men with other men, with nature, and with God, determined by a pattern of thought which orients itself toward the principles of harmony and balance. The paper highlights the story of the birth of Semar, or Laire [in English: la-ee-ray} Semar, which shows how the Javanese morality was constructed and power in the Javanese conception implemented. Semar, god in human form, reveals the essence of power a king should have, and teaches that power is a godly characteristic used to enhance goodness. This concept is against the belief that power is ruthlessness and domineering that is hidden in good-look, princely manner and power. His ugly looking reflects the importance of inner strength which is generous and kind, over handsome outward look, but has a mean heart As an expression of arts, the puppeteers hold an important role to distribute the stories that have philosophical meaning to the audience when the leather puppet show was conducted. A puppeteer, after all, carries a holy role.

Abstract

The writing examines how the process of maintaining the ideology of white supremacy and how Django’s character is constructed as a subject in planting white ideology in the movie Django Unchained (2012) based on the analysis of Django’s relationship with other characters. The appearance of the movie during the state of post-racial society in America can be seen as a form of criticism of the ideology, and the movie will be analyzed to deconstruct it. The approaches used in this thesis are Stuart Hall’s interpretation of Gramci’s hegemony in the context of racial. This study aims to look at the process of hegemony to maintain white supremacy and clarify the status of the controller and the controlled. Moreover, analysis of the characters’ relationship becomes important because Django’s relationship with the other white characters represent minority and majority group relations. With the results of this study, the movie Django Unchained is a medium to build and maintain the hegemony of white supremacy.

Abstract

The sense of loss of a mother leads Anna Morgan to her imagined black identity. Being a Creole from Dominica, Morgan is alienated both in her home country and in London. Du Bois’s notion of double consciousness substantiates Morgan’s sense of alienation. The racial issue here is not only socially constructed, but it is also personally constructed, as Morgan does not consider England as her homeland although she is as white as English people. people. The character is struggling from identity conflict, as she internalizes the impact of the British colonialization to the black people in Dominica. She feels more black than white because of the image of blackness that she creates from the image of her mother and black women in general, as nurturing, warm and domestic. In addition to that, the geographic location contributes to Morgan’s sense of loss.

Abstract

American Dream is a concept that plays an important role in the American history and its society. The main values of the American Dream are life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. These are represented in Captain America, carrier of the spirit of America to the world. Captain America, the main character in a comic, also preserved the values in the American Dream, so it is proven that there is a relation between Captain America and the American Dream. The problem is that there are changes in the way people see the concept of the American Dream today. It is because many people tend to simplify the values in which the concept off ers. This paper examines the relation between the change of perspective and the way the people in the U.S in applying the American Dream with the death of Captain America as the representation of the American Dream. This paper argues that the Death of Captain America can be a representation of the failure in the concept because Captain America died defending what he believed as the true American Dream that all the people in the U.S should preserve. Thus, many people believe the values which Captain America preserved are no longer suitable in the society today.

Abstract

Cooking activities in the traditional kitchen or in the domestic area—which are supposed to be the domain of women—are interpreted as an obligation as well as a form of a woman’s service to her family, spouse, children, and even other people who are close to her life. In other words, cooking in the domestic area is an undefined job. Regardless of the fact, when cooking shifted to the public space, it turned into a professional job, a work area which was later known as the professional kitchen. People who work in a professional kitchen are given the title professional chef. Ironically, such a professional kitchen, often thought to be easily controlled by women—who for centuries have always been related to cooking activities—is actually controlled and dominated by men, starting from culinary studies (tata boga) to the industry. As a skill, cooking is actually an activity that can be performed by anyone, regardless of gender. In reality, cooking activities, in both traditional and professional kitchens, place women in a marginal and subordinate position. To learn why women, who are often considered as “the queen of the traditional kitchen”, find it difficult to control and dominate professional kitchens, we examine a number of studies that have analyzed the professional life of female chefs as well as various forms of gender inequality in the chefs’ workplace or the professional kitchen.

Abstract

Apart from its religious values, the hijab has currently developed into a lifestyle. The issue concerning the hijab in Indonesia has evolved over time with a fascinating complexity that is worth to be examined. The Indonesian people who have the habit of questioning the decision to wear or not to wear the hijab illustrates that the choice of Indonesian women is not considered as a personal matter. This research will discuss how the phenomenon of “questioning the decision to wear or not wear the hijab” is based on the epistemology of ignorance, which investigates and explains how ignorance is formed and preserved in this phenomenon. The revelation of the women’s complex experiences concerning their hijab is part of the epistemology of ignorance. This research uses a literature study method to obtain sources and present data, followed by a critical reflection method to explore and reflect on ignorance in the phenomenon under study. This article concludes that interfering in women’s decisions to wear or not to wear the hijab is a form of ignoring women’s subjective experiences and women’s autonomy because it creates misunderstandings and violates human rights.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the factors causing the threat of extinction and the strategy of maintaining the sinrili tradition in the Makassar community. This study is based on library research with a descriptive approach. The results of this research reveal that the factors that cause the threat of extinction of the sinrili tradition in the Makassar community are:(1) Work as a singer is not considered as a main profession in Makassar, and is only seen as a side job. (2) The development of modern music which is more attractive to the younger generation poses a challenge to this tradition. (3) The quantity of sinrili in Makassar has deteriorated because the three sinrili maestros have died. There are five strategies for maintaining the sinrili tradition in the Makassar community, namely (1) the provision of a forum by the Government, in this case, the Office of Culture to form a sinrili community (2) developing the interest of the younger generations by holding cultural festivals and having sinrili competitions (3) teaching the sinrili tradition through art circles or clubs (4) documenting the sinrili oral literature, and (5) including the sinrili tradition in the teaching materials of local content subjects of Makassar regional culture. From the results of this research, it can be concluded that currently the process of regenerating singers is still going on through the process of legacy and learning, but at present, there is only one person who is good at singing and performing sinrili, namely Arif Rahman Daeng Rate. Thus, the condition of the sinrili tradition requires serious attention from all parties so that this tradition will remain sustainable and not go into extinction.
