Abstract

An annotated translation is a translation with notes or annotations of the equivalent selected in the target language with the aim of being accountable for the equivalent. This study examines a tale entitled “la Sorcière de la Rue Mouffetard” written by Pierre Gripari. This study employs qualitative methods and a comparative model to discuss translation problems and their solutions using translation strategies from Molina and Albir (2002). The use of interjection, idioms, and words containing culture is the problem in this fairy tale translation of language and cultural elements. Various dictionaries and websites are used both in the process of translating and the annotation process. The results of this study are expected to become one of the Indonesian-language fairy tales that will enrich children’s literature, especially from France.

Abstract

The women, who survived the 1965 tragedy and had been political prisoners because they were thought to have ties to the Indonesian Communist Party, had been silenced for a long time. Those female survivors then spoke through songs in the Dialita Choir. What they do is a form of women’s writing which is an attempt to include women in historical narratives. This study aims to analyze their act as a form of feminine writing that can be seen through the lyrics of a song sung by the Dialita Choir. The lyrics from the Dialita Choir are treated as text. The analysis in this study uses a feminist perspective with a critical discourse analysis approach. This study found that written songs became a coping mechanism for them while being arrested.

Abstract

United Colors of Benetton, or UCB, has been using its advertisements to deliver positive messages and values that the clothing company represents. This article analyzes one of the photographs in Benetton’s campaign for their Spring Summer Collection of 2018. The campaign, which consists of some photographs by Oliviero Toscani, raises the theme of equality of gender and ethnicity. It shows various photographs of both female and male models from different ethnicities. However, it is found that there is one photograph that shows inconsistency with the very value that Benetton wants to convey through their campaign. Based on the semiotic analysis, the study shows that the photograph can be read as having an entirely different message that the company intends to voice. This article proves that multiple interpretations can be applied to a text, and a text can betray itself.

Abstract

Literature, as a work containing facts and fiction, can obscure the conventions of realities and create new realities so that there are no visible boundaries between the real thing and the unreal thing. Fact and fiction coincide and simulate to form hyperreality. In the short story “Yang Datang dari Negeri Asap (Who Comes from the Smoky Country)” by Hary B. Kori’un, the existence of facts and fiction overlap each other. The author created the country of smoke as a fictitious world due to his contemplation on the consumption culture, which is a phenomenon in people’s lives and relates it to the haze disaster that keeps going to occur every year. The researcher sorts out facts and fiction that are interconnected in the short story to explore the creation of hyperreality using the perspective of Jean Baudrillard. As a result, the researcher found a consumption culture in the community, especially plantation entrepreneurs. The presence of a new world in a short story is a reproduction of the value of a sign or symbol that simulates as if there was a poverty scenario created by globalization through a variety of industrial distribution media to extract all potentials to benefit an established industry. Finally, consumption culture causes all aspects of life to be a commodity object because the needs that arise will always exceed the production of goods.

Abstract

This paper discusses the syntactic function of the word jeongmal (정말) analyzed through part of speech (품사). In the Korean language, a word can be classified into more than one parts of speech, which is called pumsa tongyong (품사통용) or conversion. An example of pumsa tongyong is the word jeongmal, which can function as an adverb, noun, and interjection. This research shows that such classification makes the word jeongmal has different functions in a syntactic unit, which are main component (predicate), attributive component (adverb), and independent component. In addition, the limitations of the word jeongmal as a noun and POS-tagging error in classifying the word jeongmal as an interjection in the corpus were found. The syntactic function of the word jeongmal is important to be understood because jeongmal is a basic vocabulary with a high frequency of use, both spoken and written. This research is using a quantitative- qualitative method by analyzing a corpus (corpus-based analysis), 21st Century Sejong Corpora (21세기 세종 말뭉치). POS-tagged written and spoken corpus data is used as the data source of this research.
