Abstract

Semiotics is the study of signs, symbols, and communication in people’s lives. This study which analyzes the letter nun in the Arabic Alphabet using Ferdinand de Saussure’s theory of semiotics, “dyadic semiotics” aims to reveal the breadth and depth of the meaning of the letter nun at the beginning of Surah al-Qalam. This study uses a descriptive method with a content analysis study approach, comprising data collection, data processing, and interpretation. The source of data are the Arabic script. The results of the study show that the ontological symbol for the letter nun is a means of teaching the sign through an established paradigm of semiotics to investigate the meaning element of the letter nun, which is the symbol of the Golden Embryo as a form of symbolic interaction throughout the cosmic order to reproduce and fertilize the world’s egg cell which is symbolized by the cup-like element of the letter nun as the “ovary” and the dot of the letter as a symbol of the fusion between the ‘egg cell and sperm cell’ to become the seed of the eternal universe towards the point of perfection of cosmic semiotic regeneration. All cosmic semiotic processes always occur in all life processes such as the semiotic processes that occur through human reproductive organs such as the testes in males and the ovaries in females in every fertilization process of the zygote. Every order of the cosmos, including human beings, originates from the process of two forms of signs, namely, that which can be seen and observed (signifier) and that which is only to be thought about through ideas (signified).

Abstract

This research is a development of Low’s theory (2008) on assessing the quality of song lyric translation based on its translation method. The objective of the study is to discover the quality of rhyme and rhythm of song lyrics in the album We Love Disney which have been translated from English to Indonesian. Therefore, this study focuses on the quality of rhyme and rhythm of the translation because these elements are significant parts of the songs. Low’s theory has been applied in the present study to measure the song lyric translation quality using three translation methods: communicative, free, and semantic methods. The study employs a qualitative approach through comparative analysis. Data in the analysis are the song lyrics and their translation, and their rhymes and rhythms. The values of the rhyme and rhythm in the translations were obtained from the comparative analysis. The findings reveal that song lyrics translated using the communicative translation method have a higher rhyme value than the original song lyrics; in contrast, the lyrics translated using a free method yield a rhyme value with a considerable difference. The assessment of rhythm reveals that a song translated using the free method shows a substantial difference in value compared to translations using the other methods. KEYWORDS

Abstract

The goal of the study is to review changes in dryland farming culture of atoni pah meto in North Center Timor District caused by global climate changes. The research method used was qualitative descriptive: the data collecting method used was interviews, observations, and the document study. Research results prove that the atoni pah meto which consists of eighteen farming rituals, five work patterns, work division between genders, and work ethos, has shifted. It is caused by the interaction of atoni pah meto with other nations, tribes, and ethnic groups, further affected by global climate changes. Climate changes have made a great impact on farmer’s existence and culture. Because of that, the atoni pah meto of NCT District must open up more by accepting changes in the form of program intervention from the governmental and private institutions. It is time to leave shifting cultivation and slash and burn culture, and move to nature friendly farming technologies. Sickle culture will be offered here to replace slash and burn culture, supported by technologies, a more efficient work pattern and work division, and high work ethos, and it is expected that dryland farming of atoni pah meto will persevere.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describes the verbal symbols and cultural imagery of Lio Ethnic (LE) community which are contained in Batuna’u Prayer (BP). The theory used as analytical scalpel is the Cultural Linguistics Theory (CLT). This study shows 5 forms of BP used in LE community, which are the traditional house construction BP (THC), going to sow BP (GS), delivering dowry BP (DD), going to school BP (GSC), and deceased person BP (DP). From these five forms of BP, there are verbal symbols of a language grammatical discourse (phonology, morphology, and syntax), and the metaphor styles of language, metonymy, poetic sound, and pararelism phrase. After in-depth interpretation of those verbal symbols, some cultural imagery of LE community has been found, such as (1) belief/religion imagery, (2) social imagery, (3) political imagery, (4) human ego towards else imagery, (5) beauty imagery, (6) fear imagery, (7) appreciative imagery, and (8) honor imagery. These study findings describe the noble values which are manifested in Batuna’u prayers. Therefore, they will be beneficial for the Lio Ethnic community in general, and especially for Lio Ethnic students and scholars that have not recognized the noble values contained in Batuna’u prayers.

Abstract

The absence of equivalents is an issue that has always been faced by translators in translating the source text. When translating proverbs, which are loaded with moral and cultural messages, translators are required to be able to transfer the messages appropriately. The different types of proverbs between French and Indonesian are a major cause of translators’ difficulty in finding the equivalents in the form of proverbs. This issue was raised from the author’s own experience in translating French fable by Jean de La Fontaine into Indonesian. By using the theory of Paremi and proverbs types of Bhuvaneswar (2000), French and Indonesian proverbs are analyzed in order to find the kinds of proverbs of the source language and the target language. It was found that the absence of equivalents in the form of Indonesian proverbs caused by the opposite of types of French proverbs and Indonesian proverbs. The majority of French proverbs are literal, whereas Indonesian proverbs are mostly metaphors. Data were taken from the fables of Jean de La Fontaine and its translation into Indonesian.

Abstract

This paper reviews the theories used by new scholars in Translation Studies (TS) in Indonesia, to determine whether TS or translation theory there has followed the development of TS throughout the world. The study investigated the terms and authors/ scholars of TS found in the final papers of students at Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Negeri Jakarta between 2006 and 2016. Using a corpus tool, WordSmith Tools 6.0, keyword and cluster analyses were applied to search for terms and authors. Results show no significant progress in attainment of knowledge on TS. Indonesian students’ knowledge of translation theory seems to come primarily from the 1960s–1990s era.

Abstract

Divergent cultural schema (DCS) is a collection of cultural knowledge required to interpret a text, which is assumed to be present in source readers (SR) but absent in target readers (TR). DCS typically takes the form of a highly concise source text without any sufficient information, so the translator applied various strategies. Bram Stoker’s Dracula, consisting of its English source text (ST) and Indonesian target text (TT), was chosen as data source due to its strong Victorian-European setting which contains many potential DCS. Data analysis generated several categories of results. The first is units of analysis (n = 758) which are classified into various schemata (n = 21) and subschemata (n = 84) based on certain similarity in schematic characteristics. The second is various types of ST divergence (n = 13). The third is the reasons for applying domesticating (n = 16) or foreignizing (n = 12) strategies, as well as their weaknesses (n = 20). The fourth is domestication as the dominant translation ideology. The fifth is a number of interesting phenomena (n = 25) related to the transfer of DCS such as ideological level, different levels of divergence among TR, and “foreignization” and “domestication” by ST writer. This research demonstrates the complexity of strategy applications and ideological positions which are dependent on many factors such as narrative context, linguistic constraints, ST divergence, or TR schemata.
