Abstract

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nurses on pediatric pain management of invasive procedures are important aspects of nursing competencies. Children are usually unable to express pain accurately, hence these competencies are vital to ensure pain in pediatric patients is addressed appropriately.  However, there is still limited research on this topic. The aim of this study was to understand the knowledge, attitudes and practices of nurses about the pain management of invasive procedures in pediatric patients. This study employed a cross-sectional approach and conducted in two hospitals in Yogyakarta with a total sample of 63 pediatric nurses. Valid questionnaire with 12 demographic data questions, 12 nurse knowledge questionnaire questions, 13 nurse attitude questionnaire questions, and 10 nurse practice questions was used. Nurses' knowledge scores on pain management of invasive procedures in pediatric patients was relatively high with an average score of 10.11 (84%), the attitude score about the management of pain of invasive procedures in children was in the relatively in good category with an average score of 48.52 or (68.31%) and the nurse's practice on pain management of invasive procedures in children was still suboptimal with an average score of 38.87 or (72%). Nurses have relatively good knowledge in handling the pain of invasive procedures in pediatric patients, while the nurse’ attitudes and practices are still not optimal. Therefore, nurse’ competencies in this aspect should be imroved to ensure high quality of nursing care in pediatric pateints.

Abstract

Fractures and orthopedic surgeries are common procedures that require optimal regional anesthesia techniques to support patient recovery. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of epidural anesthesia and subarachnoid block (SAB) on the quality of recovery in orthopedic surgery patients through a systematic literature review. The literature search was conducted in the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases for the period 2015–2025, using the PRISMA guidelines. A total of 6 studies that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed narratively. The results indicate that epidural techniques and spinal-epidural combinations such as CSEA, CSA, and SCSE tend to yield better recovery outcomes compared to SAB, particularly regarding hemodynamic stability, duration of analgesia, postoperative pain control, and early mobilization. Additionally, the incidence of hypotension, urinary retention, and back pain is lower with epidural or combination techniques. However, SAB remains superior in terms of rapid onset of action and ease of technique. In conclusion, epidural techniques better support multidimensional recovery quality in orthopedic patients compared to SAB.

Abstract

Bronchopneumonia remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children, particularly in early life, and may be accompanied by cardiac complications such as perimyocarditis. This report describes the clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, management, and outcome of a 16 month old female child admitted with progressive shortness of breath, high fever, productive cough, and rhinorrhea. The patient presented with initial symptoms of lower respiratory tract infection with respiratory distress and suspected cardiac involvement as indicated by a heart murmur and gallop on auscultation. Chest radiography showed bilateral bronchopneumonia with cardiomegaly. During hospitalization, the patient developed rapid clinical deterioration with decreased consciousness, respiratory failure, and shock, requiring transfer to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Further evaluation by echocardiography demonstrated left ventricular dilatation, global hypokinetic left ventricle, ejection fraction of 30%, moderate mitral regurgitation, and minimal pericardial effusion. Based on the clinical and supporting  findings, the final diagnosis was perimyocarditis with bronchopneumonia. The patient's condition showed significant clinical improvement after being given oxygenation therapy, antibiotics and heart failure therapy. This case highlights the importance of early recognition of cardiac involvement in children with bronchopneumonia, especially in those with rapid deterioration and hemodynamic instability.

Abstract

The consumption pattern of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) among adolescents has shown a worrying increase in recent years. It has been linked to various adverse health outcomes, such as an increased risk of obesity, diabetes-mellitus, and other metabolic disorders. Several factors may influence this consumption behaviour, including nutrition literacy, body image, and the amount of pocket money adolescents receive. This article aims to critically review and analyze scientific findings related to the relationship between nutrition literacy, body image, and pocket money and adolescents' consumption of SSBs. The method used in this article is a literature review of scientific articles obtained through PubMed, Elsevier, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, with inclusion criteria including international articles published within the last five years (2020–2025) relevant to the topic and peer-reviewed. The review findings indicate that higher nutrition literacy is associated with healthier dietary behaviours and reduced sugar- sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption. Body image has a significant role in emotional eating, including SSB intake. Additionally, greater pocket money is linked to higher consumption of SSBs. These three factors are interrelated and influence adolescent consumption patterns. Therefore, comprehensive interventions should be designed in cognitive, psychosocial, and economic aspects through sustainable, adolescent-centered nutrition education.

Abstract

The skin barrier is the outermost protective layer of the skin that plays an important role in maintaining skin hydration and preventing excessive water loss. Damage to the skin barrier can increase transepidermal water loss (TEWL), causing the skin to become dry, sensitive, and prone to irritation. Moisturizers are used to improve skin barrier function by increasing skin hydration and reducing TEWL. This study aimed to conduct a scoping review of moisturizer formulations for skin barrier repair based on transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and stratum corneum hydration parameters. The research method used was a scoping review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Literature searches were conducted through Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Semantic Scholar databases using research articles published between 2019–2026 related to the study topic. A total of 20 articles met the inclusion criteria, consisting of experimental formulation studies and clinical studies. The review results showed that moisturizers are available in various topical dosage forms such as gels, creams, lotions, serums, emulgels, and cleansers with herbal and modern active ingredients such as ceramide, niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate, and Centella asiatica extracellular vesicles (Cica EVs). Gel preparations were the most commonly used formulations because they have a light texture, are comfortable to use, and are easy to apply to the skin. In experimental studies, emulgel containing limpasu fruit extract showed the most optimal physical characteristics based on viscosity and spreadability parameters. Meanwhile, in clinical studies, ceramide-based moisturizers showed the best effectiveness in increasing skin hydration and significantly reducing TEWL. The effectiveness of moisturizers was also influenced by the combination of humectants, emollients, occlusives, and gelling agents in the formulation. Overall, moisturizers have good potential in increasing skin hydration and improving skin barrier function through reducing TEWL and increasing stratum corneum hydration.

Abstract

Tablets are one of the most widely used pharmaceutical dosage forms because they offer various advantages, such as accurate dosing, ease of use, practicality in storage and distribution, and good stability compared to other dosage forms. The physical stability of tablets is a critical factor in ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of medications. In the pharmaceutical industry, the active ingredients used in tablet formulations can be derived from synthetic compounds or natural sources, such as plant extracts. This study was conducted to compare the physical stability of tablets containing synthetic active ingredients and tablets containing plant extract active ingredients. This study employed a literature review method with a descriptive-comparative approach. The results showed that tablets formulated using the wet granulation method with synthetic active ingredients exhibited consistent values for hardness, friability, and disintegration time regarding physical stability. In contrast, tablets with a plant extract active ingredients showed more variable results because the characteristics of natural materials can affect the physical stability of the tablets. Therefore, tablets with synthetic active ingredients demonstrated better physical stability compared to herbal extract tablets because the properties of synthetic active substances are more homogeneous and easier to formulate using the wet granulation method.

Abstract

The phenomenon of burnout syndrome among nurses has become a critical issue that requires serious attention, considering nurses' role as frontline healthcare providers. Job burnout is influenced not only by physical workload but also by psychological factors, work environment conditions, social support, and individual resilience. This study aims to examine the relationship between burnout syndrome and nurses’ quality of life, as well as its impact on clinical service quality, particularly in post-stroke patient care. The research employed a literature review method by analyzing studies obtained from Google Scholar published between 2022 and 2025. A total of 20 articles that met the inclusion criteria were systematically reviewed. The findings indicate that burnout syndrome is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. A significant negative relationship was identified between the Quality of Nursing Work Life (QNWL) and burnout levels, indicating that poorer work-life quality increases the likelihood of burnout among nurses. Burnout was also found to negatively affect healthcare service standards, reduce empathy toward patients, and lower compliance with infection prevention and control protocols. Furthermore, the high prevalence of burnout contributes to increased turnover intentions among nurses. Psychological interventions, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and psychoeducation, have been shown to effectively reduce burnout levels and improve emotional regulation. These findings highlight the importance of organizational strategies that support nurses’ well-being in order to enhance healthcare quality and patient safety.

Abstract

The antibiotic gentamicin has the potential to harm the kidneys by raising levels of oxidative stress, which in turn affects serum albumin and Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN). Some of the antioxidant and nephroprotective properties found in cherry fruit (Muntingia calabura L.) include flavonoids, phenols, saponins, alkaloids, and triterpenoids. In this research, the purpose was to examine the impact of an ethanolic cherry fruit extract on the levels of albumin and BUN in male Wistar rats that had been treated with gentamicin. Thirty white rats were split into five groups for this experimental investigation. For 8 days, the normal group did not receive any therapy, the induction group took 100 mg/kgBW of gentamicin, and the treatment groups took 100, 200, or 400 mg/kgBW of cherry fruit extract orally in addition to the gentamicin induction. We used enzymatic techniques with UV-Vis spectrophotometry to assess the levels of BUN and albumin. A decrease in kidney function, as shown by changes in albumin and BUN levels, was seen after gentamicin therapy. When compared to the gentamicin group, the kidney function of the cherry fruit extract group was shown to be somewhat improved at dosages of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW. There were no statistically significant changes in albumin or BUN levels brought about by the extract, according to the study.  Finally, although cherry fruit (Muntingia calabura L.) ethanolic extract showed promise in describing its effects on kidney function maintenance, it has failed to establish statistically significant efficacy as a nephroprotective drug.

Abstract

Depression is a mental disorder involving biological changes, including an imbalance in the gut microbiota. The gut-brain axis acts as a bidirectional communication system between the gut and the central nervous system through neural, immunological, endocrine, and metabolic pathways. This literature review aims to evaluate the role of the gut-brain axis and probiotics in the pathogenesis and management of depression. The review was conducted narratively using articles retrieved from Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect, with 12 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. Results indicate that gut microbiota dysbiosis is associated with increased inflammation, impaired neurotransmitter regulation, changes in microbial metabolites, and dysfunctional gut-brain communication. Several studies have also reported that probiotic supplementation, particularly Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, has the potential to improve symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and influence biological parameters related to the gut-brain axis. However, effectiveness varies depending on the strain, dose, and duration of intervention. Overall, the gut-brain axis plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of depression, and probiotics have the potential to be used as adjunctive therapy by modulating the gut microbiota. However, large-scale clinical studies with more standardized designs are needed to confirm their effectiveness and mechanisms of action.
