This research aims to integrate Lombok's local wisdom values into English language teaching, particularly for junior high school level to strengthen students' character and identity to face future challenges. This research employed a Research and Development approach to produce local wisdom-based textbooks with a total population and sample of 72 students who are divided into 12 groups based on the units in each textbook which are developed. Meanwhile, the practicality of the teaching materials was assessed by 2 lecturers who taught the Textbook and Material Development course, while the object of this research was the English teaching materials for junior high school level that would be developed. So far, there has never been any action to develop materials by integrating local wisdom in the form of folk tales, especially on the island of Lombok, into reading material in textbooks. This research reveals that some important characteristics obtained from Lombok's local wisdom values that can be integrated into English language learning, they are religious, tolerant and egalitarian. Religious character becomes the foundation of other characters. These different characters can be integrated into the teaching and learning process. In the teaching process, teachers adjust teaching steps by instilling religiosity, tolerant and egalitarian values, while, materials are equipped with a teacher's book which provides direction to teachers, especially regarding the interpretation of local wisdom values so that they comply with competency standards and basic competencies in the curriculum which is currently being implemented in Indonesia. Keywords: English textbooks, local wisdom, religion, tolerant, egalitarian.

Abstract

Seating arrangements play a crucial role in education, but traditional approaches may not meet students' needs. This research is a comparative experimental approach using the concurrent embedded mixed-method research approach to investigate whether different seating arrangements (separate tables and horseshoe) shows a sinificant difference on students' participation potentials and achievement in English. This study explores students’ participation and achievement potential in different seating arrangements (separate tables and horseshoe) on 8th-grade students' participation and achievement in English. Data from 50 students at SMPN13 Mtm were collected through observations, quetionnaire surveys, and tests, analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings revealed significant differences in participation potentials across certain indicators, with separate tables enhancing motoric and mental activities and horseshoe arrangements benefiting visual and writing activities. However, both arrangements showed no significant difference in listening, oral, and emotional activities. In terms of achievement, the study revealed significant differences in students' achievement on different seating arrangements students with separate tables achieved higher academic performance compared to the horseshoe arrangement. These results indicate that seating arrangements influence students' participation and achievement, suggesting alternative seating options for implementation in classrooms, with consideration of specific factors.

A positive correlation was found between the number of flashcard sets used and students' NGSLT scores. The findings suggest that digital learning platforms like Memrise can significantly enhance vocabulary acquisition, making learning more engaging and effective. The study recommends integrating such tools into educational practices to improve vocabulary learning outcomes. Abstract

Abstract

This study intended to describe the strategies of English teachers with tour guide experiences used in teaching English and the effects of teachers’ experiences as a tour guide on their teaching. The research used a qualitative research method which implemented a case study approach. The procedures of data collection were observation and interview. Technique of data analysis were data condensation, data display, and verification and conclusion. The result of the data showed that there were 8 (eight) cognitive strategies and 3 (three) metacognitive strategies that teachers used in their teaching. The cognitive strategies include repetition, resourcing, translation, note-taking, elaboration, imagery, and inferencing whereas, whilst, the metacognitive strategies encompass setting learning objectives, creating study plans, and monitoring comprehension and production. Moreover, the effects of English teachers’ experiences as tour guides on their teaching include the teachers' concerns to help students be familiar with several accents and help them understand variations in pronunciation and intonation, then minimizing confusion when students are faced with various accents. Another effect is the process of running the class in which the teachers occasionally involve tourists in classroom activities. Because of this, students can speak directly with them, and improve their English speaking, listening, and understanding skills with authentic accents.

Abstract

Learning English for VHS students should be directed at mastering the ability to use English for communication in their respective fields. However, field observations show that the ability to use English remains a challenge for most VHS students due to various obstacles. This study aims to develop an innovative teaching module model to support the implementation of teaching English for Vocational Schools (TEVHS). This is qualitative reserach using survey method. It was conducted at VHS in Mataram Lombok, involving 23 English teachers from VHS English Teachers’ Forum (MGMP VHS). The data were collected using triangulation techniques such as a questionnaire, focus group discussion (FGD), ducummentary. The collected data were then analyzed qualitatively using Miles & Hubbermen’s Model consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Based on the analysis, the conclusions are as follows: (1) English learning for VHS students needs to be reconstructed to meet the demands of the workforce. With the diverse requirements of various occupations, the design of TEVHS must be based on the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach; (2) TEVHS must be designed to instill communication skills by providing various inputs from receptive skills (Listening, Reading, and Viewing) which can be used as models for language production (Speaking, Reading, Presenting). To enhance innovation in learning, it is recommended that the design of TEVHS integrate such approach and model as ESP, Whole-Part-Whole, and TPACK to overcome various problems.
