Abstract

This study examines the psychological conflicts experienced by the main character in the novel Belenggu by Armijn Pane, as one of the modern Indonesian novels that highlights a lot of human inner upheavals. The purpose of this research is to explain the forms of psychological conflicts that arise, identify the causes of these conflicts, and see how they impact the actions and character development of the characters. This research uses the hermeneutic approach and the literary psychology approach, and utilizes Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory in the data analysis process. The main data of the research is in the form of narrative quotes and dialogues that show the mental state of the characters, such as guilt, anxiety, confusion, emotional dependence, and feelings of emptiness in life. Based on the analysis, it was found that the inner conflicts experienced by Sukartono, Tini, and Yah were influenced by disharmonious domestic relationships, clashes of cultural values, and unmet emotional needs. The conflict then affects the way they make decisions and deal with problems in the story. The results of this study conclude that the novel Belenggu not only presents the problem of love, but also describes the search for identity and the psychological struggle of modern humans in understanding the meaning of life. Therefore, this novel has an important value in literary studies that focus on the psychological aspects of the characters. Keywords: literary psychology, inner conflict, novel Fetters, characters

Abstract

This study investigates Turkish EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners’ perceptions, attitudes, and usage patterns regarding ChatGPT and online dictionaries for the acquisition of English collocations. Utilizing a quantitative research design, data were collected via an online questionnaire from 27 university-level participants, including preparatory and master’s students. The findings reveal that while online dictionaries remain the primary and most trusted resource for checking grammatical patterns and seeking reliable definitions (M=3.81), ChatGPT is increasingly perceived as a valuable "language assistant" for production-based tasks. Specifically, participants rated online dictionaries higher for reliability and ease of use. However, ChatGPT was perceived as more effective for improving writing (M=4.11) and speaking (M=4.04) skills due to its ability to provide personalized feedback and generate contextualized examples. Despite the benefits of AI (Artificial Intelligence), learners demonstrated a cautious approach, often using ChatGPT as a "gap-filler" rather than a primary source. The study concludes that the integration of AI tools does not replace traditional resources but rather offers a complementary framework where dictionaries serve verification purposes and AI facilitates linguistic exploration. Pedagogical implications suggest that educators should provide explicit training on leveraging both tools to foster autonomous and context-aware collocation learning.

Abstract

Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis (CAH) has long been an important tool in understanding the relationship between the first language (L1) and the second language (L2). CAH can be traced to its origins: the behaviorist theory, whose primary role was to predict linguistic interference. However, since this hypothesis has been criticized for not being inclusive and sensitive about learner errors, it left the spotlight to Error Analysis and Interlanguage Theory. However, this systematic review of 19 empirical articles sourced from the Web of Science (2016–2025) reveals that CAH remains highly relevant. Current research demonstrates a paradigm shift: it is not only used as a tool to identify errors, but it also helps educators foster linguistic awareness and bridge the gap between L1 and target-language structures. The study concludes that CAH is a prominent tool, despite previous criticisms, and can be a practical way to enhance both teaching methodologies and learner outcomes when applied in a balanced manner.
