Abstract

This meta-analysis investigated the effectiveness of using TED Talks to improve speaking skills among university students. A comprehensive literature search identified 16 relevant experimental studies that compared speaking outcomes between groups using TED Talks and control groups. Results revealed an overall large, statistically significant positive effect (g = 1.521, p < 0.001), indicating that students who utilized TED Talks scored substantially higher on speaking measures than control groups. However, a high degree of heterogeneity (I2 = 97.5%) suggested variability in effectiveness across studies. When examined by country, substantial positive effects were found for Egypt (g = 5.579) and Saudi Arabia (g = 1.955), with high positive impacts in Indonesia (g = 0.889), Pakistan (g = 1.188), and Russia (g = 1.138). More modest gains around 0.3-0.7 standard deviations emerged for South Korea and Turkey, while China showed a negligible effect (g = 0.072). Despite some individual null/negative findings, this meta-analysis provides robust evidence that integrating TED Talks can substantially enhance university students' speaking proficiency, particularly in particular national contexts. Potential moderators influencing effectiveness and recommendations for optimizing TED Talk implementation are discussed.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze whether education, health, unemployment, asset ownership, and road infrastructure factors simultaneously influence the spatial patterns of poverty in Tapin Regency. The final results will determine strategies for empowering the poor in Tapin Regency. This study employs a quantitative approach with statistical techniques and follows a descriptive correlational design. The results show that education, health, unemployment, asset ownership, and road infrastructure variables have a significant partial and simultaneous impact on poverty in both the three sub-districts and Tapin Regency as a whole. The primary strategy for empowering the poor in Tapin Regency is the Strength-Opportunity (S-O) strategy. This involves enhancing the role of companies through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs aimed at empowering the poor by developing superior commodity products and increasing the number of local entrepreneurs as part of the local government's priority strategy to reduce poverty. The recommendations for the Tapin Regency Government to empower the poor economically include improving the education and health levels of the community, partly by providing infrastructure to facilitate access to educational and health facilities, reducing unemployment through increased labor-intensive programs, and constructing road infrastructure to alleviate the isolation of areas prone to poverty.

Abstract

Three-phase electric motors are essential components in industrial production processes, playing a crucial role as the driving force for almost all industrial machinery. These motors are susceptible to various electrical disturbances, such as overcurrent caused by overloads or short circuits. Common issues that frequently occur with three-phase motors include high starting currents, overcurrent, and short circuits. To mitigate the losses caused by these disturbances, an effective protection system is necessary. This study analyzes the implementation of a protection system using Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) to control and monitor the protection mechanisms for electric motors. The proposed protection system aims to safeguard the motors from disturbances such as high starting currents, overcurrent, and short circuits. By leveraging the real-time monitoring and control capabilities of PLCs and the user-friendly interface of HMIs, the system can accurately detect and respond to abnormal conditions, thereby minimizing the risk of damage to critical three-phase motors. The development of this protection system ensures the reliability and longevity of three-phase motors in industrial applications, reducing downtime and enhancing overall operational efficiency.

Abstract

Fraudulent financial reporting occurs when public officials and others intentionally engage in dishonest and illegal acts to alter or conceal financial information, thereby creating a false picture of financial health and performance. As a result, financial statements become unreliable and misleading for stakeholders when making important decisions. This study adopts the fraud hexagon which identifies six elements (pressure, capability, collusion, opportunity, rationalization, and arrogance) to analyze and obtain empirical evidence regarding the factors that influence the tendency of fraudulent financial reporting. A total of 34 provincial governments in Indonesia in 2019-2022 comprised the population and sample used in this study. Multiple linear regression data analysis techniques were used in this study to evaluate hypotheses using secondary data and SPSS 29. The results showed that the tendency of fraudulent financial reporting was simultaneously influenced by the elements of the fraud hexagon. The tendency of fraudulent financial reporting is partially influenced by pressure, opportunity and arrogance. However, the tendency of fraudulent financial reporting is partially uninfluenced by capability, collusion, and rationalization. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that the government, society, and other stakeholders focus on key elements that affect the integrity of financial reporting.

Abstract

Donating blood is an altruistic act driven by concern for others and personal commitment to health. It is crucial for patients needing transfusions due to excessive bleeding. However, there has been a decline in blood donations globally. To address this, the medical community needs a method to predict whether a donor will donate again, enabling proactive measures to ensure an adequate blood supply. This study utilizes data from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Machine Learning Repository, specifically the Blood Transfusion Service Data Set, employing the Decision Tree method with the C4.5 algorithm. C4.5, an improvement over Iterative Dichotomiser 3 (ID3), can handle missing values, pruning, and continuous data. The aim is to classify blood donor eligibility accurately. The aim of this study is to explore how the utilization of the C4.5 algorithm in decision tree classification can predict whether an individual will donate blood again or not. The analysis identifies five key attributes—Recency, Frequency, Monetary, Time (Months), and Decision—as determinants of repeat donation likelihood. Using a confusion matrix to assess accuracy, the C4.5 algorithm achieved a 77.68% accuracy, with an error rate of 22.32%, a sensitivity of 30.19%, and a specificity of 92.40%.
