Abstract

KOH string test is a simple identification method without staining, requiring only one reagent to determine the Gram reaction in bacteria. Considering the simplicity of this method, its use needs to be introduced further. However, to ensure the validity of this method, research needs to be carried out to verify the results of the KOH string test when compared with the identification method using Gram staining, which is the gold standard. This study aimed to determine whether there is a difference in the identification results between Gram staining and the KOH string test in determining the Gram characteristics of bacteria, especially Gram-negative bacteria, to find out whether there is a difference in the length of mucus produced from the KOH string-test between KOH reagent concentrations of 1, 3, and 5%, as well as knowing the KOH concentration that was best used for bacterial identification with the KOH string test. The results of the study showed that there was no difference in results between identification using Gram staining and the KOH string test. Statistical results showed a significant difference between the mucus lengths of the three reagent concentrations, and 3% KOH was the recommended reagent for use in the KOH string test method.

Abstract

The elderly or elderly will experience health problems called aging process. The problem that often occurs in the elderly is hypertension. Hypertension is a condition in which the systolic blood pressure is more than 140 mmHg and/or diastolic is more than 90 mmHg. Risk factors that affect hypertension are lifestyle, stress and psychology, environmental factors and age. Management in patients with hypertension can be done pharmacologically and non-pharmacologically, among others, by using foot massage therapy. The purpose of this case study is to determine the evaluation of the application of foot massage to control blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension. This type of case study research is with an evaluation method of nursing care process approach. The sample number was 2 respondents, namely the elderly suffering from mild-moderate hypertension. Foot massage therapy is carried out every two days according to part-time taking medication for 7 times within 2 weeks with a duration of 20 minutes. Blood pressure measurement is measured before and after the procedure using observation sheet instruments, SOPs, tools to measure blood pressure, namely aneroid sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, and booklets to record results. The results found that respondent 1, the first day's blood pressure results of 160/100 mmHg (moderate hypertension) dropped to 130/80 mmHg (abnormally high) on day 7. Then, in respondent 2 the results of the first day's blood pressure of 150/100 mmHg (mild hypertension) dropped to 130/80 mmHg (abnormally high) on day 7. It can be concluded, that the application of foot massage can control blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension.

Abstract

Green mussels are organisms belonging to the class pelecypoda, this class has two bilaterally symmetric valve shells, these green mussels are referred to as bivalves, and are included in the soft-bodied marine biota (Mollusca). This study aims to determine the bioactive compounds and toxicity contained in the shells of green mussels (Perna viridis) which are processed seafood typical of the Riau Islands. Secondary metabolite screening tests include alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids and terpenoids as for toxicity tests using the BSLT (Brine Shrimp Lethality Test) method with shrimp larvae (Artemia salina Leach) test animals. The results of secondary metabolite screening on the test for alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids and terpenoids were declared negative while the saponin test was positive with the formation of stable foam. The results of the BSLT toxicity test (Brine Shrimp Lethality Test) with concentrations of 10 ppm, 100 ppm, and 1000 ppm obtained LC50 <1000 g/ml, which is 1127.28 ppm in the non-toxic category. In the sense that it is safe to be used as processed food.
